  • Cloquet School Board sets budget in wake of cuts

    Jana Peterson|Jun 21, 2024

It’s been four years since Covid-19 threw schools into disarray, and enrollment in Cloquet has still not bounced back. Even with more severe staffing cuts this spring than usual, on June 10 Cloquet School Board members approved a general fund budget for the 2024-25 school year that was approximately $88,000 in the red, with general fund revenues projected at $35,638,978 and expenditures of $35,727,681. The unassigned general fund is where most of the district’s payroll and day-to-day money comes from, versus specialized funds for tra...

  • Letter to the editor: Signs are there for good reason

    Jun 21, 2024

Earlier this month I saw a TV news story that some cities are placing cameras at stop signs. When you are caught not stopping at a stop sign, you might expect a fine. A lot of the comments were against this practice. I would be OK with this, and I’ll tell you why. Every day when I’m around town, I see drivers not stopping for stop signs. It happens quite frequently. One of the worst places is the four-way stop at the intersection of 14th Street and Doddridge Avenue. Some vehicles seem to make no effort to stop. I believe stop signs do not mea...

  • A village helped create Fond du Lac Tribal and Community college

    Anita Hanson|Jun 21, 2024

For 36 years, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has fulfilled its mission of providing higher education opportunities for its communities in a welcoming, culturally diverse environment. As an institution, we have much to be grateful for. In reflecting on our history, my thoughts go back to what took place behind the scenes in 1987, and years prior, to officially establish our unique institution. We are the only college in the nation that is both a Tribal college and a state community...

  • Wright Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jun 21, 2024

A weak tornado touched down in Beseman Township last Wednesday, June12. I was home at the time, and the rain came down in sheets, along with the high winds whipping the trees around in my yard. It wasn’t until the next morning that I realized several large trees came down on the north side of my driveway, blocking the road. My brother Mark Dahlman came over and cut the tree limbs back far enough for me to get out, but there will still be lots of logging to do to clean up the mess. Mark also info...

    Darrell Davey|Jun 21, 2024

This time of year the Golden Gates of Summer swing wide open in the Davey house. School is out for our girls and me, with one question looming high above all else: Now what? For us, that answer is, and always has been, camping. We kick off our summers with a low-maintenance, activity-filled trip to the Hayward KOA. This isn’t your scout camp of yore. It’s easy. It’s fun. And if you need to check those imaginary boxes of what is and isn’t camping, you can always yell at each other while backing i...

    Brady Slater|Jun 14, 2024

Erik Peterson does what he loves, consulting for grassroots advocacy in agriculture, the environment and social justice. It finds him regularly doing work with people all over the world, including as far away as Australia. All of it he does from his home off North Cloquet Road in Esko, since 2009. For some tasks, he's got to make sure his wife is not on the computer, so that his internet connection through telephone lines isn't disrupted. It was years before the Petersons learned that not all...

  • Experience here leads to state crown

    Jana Peterson|Jun 14, 2024

Ellie Evenson is not your typical beauty queen. Crowned Miss Minnesota for America Strong on June 2, the Cloquet grad wrestled her senior year at Cloquet High School and portrayed a delightfully wicked witch in the "Wizard of Oz," the school fall musical in 2022. Evenson would also say the Miss Minnesota for America Strong is also not a stereotypical pageant. Part of the Mrs. America organization - which also includes Mrs. America World and Mrs. World - participants are encouraged to be...

  • Cleanup begins at Superfund site in Esko

    Jana Peterson|Jun 14, 2024

Two parking lots in downtown Esko are the site of the latest Superfund cleanup in Carlton County. The site in Esko amounts to the Post Office and its lot, plus another lot used as an auxiliary student parking lot by Esko High School during the school year. Similar to the Frank Lloyd Wright gas station in Cloquet, dry cleaning chemicals are the main culprit. A building on the site that was first a creamery, then a coin-operated dry cleaner, was demolished in the 1980s. Chemicals used in dry...
