  • New coach, more players spell success

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 20, 2024

When Tony Bender took over coaching the Moose Lake Area boys hockey team this winter, he had a long list of things he wanted to accomplish. Among the top things on the list was increasing the number of athletes in the program and helping each player to learn the game. After seven games, the Rebels have responded with a 4-3 record and stronger play on the ice. The team's latest win came Monday in a 4-1 home victory over Spooner, Wisconsin. "We compete in every game, but there are times where we...

  • Knot Pining: Church on Christmas Eve brings a range of emotions

    Dec 20, 2024

It’s not the greatest Christmas hymn, but it sure resonates when I think of Christmas Eve services at my old church back home: “I Am So Glad Each Christmas Eve.” With each passing year, I rue more and more about not being able to attend a service at St. John’s Lutheran in Montgomery. But it’s three hours away, and there is no longer a farm 8 miles away for the opening of presents afterwards. I recall constantly thinking on those nights, especially on the dark ride home, rounding the curves at Lake Dora, about the comfort in knowing where eve...

    Jennie K. Hanson|Dec 20, 2024

Christmas is almost here. I'm wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It's this time of year that we take the time to reminisce about the past and our favorite Christmas memories. We celebrated Christmas as I was growing up on Christmas Eve. My dad would take us to town in Cromwell or Wright to get us out of the house while my mother made all the last-minute preparations for the evening. Dad would take us to the Co-op store in Wright, and we would look around at all the...

  • County explains 3% tax increase

    Brady Slater|Dec 13, 2024

Only three members of the public spoke at Wednesday’s Truth in Taxation hearing conducted by the Carlton County board and administration. While small in number, the three speakers seemed to carry the concerns of a broad swath of citizens. Namely, why do taxes keep going up? “If I don’t have enough money, I don’t go to my employer with a levy,” said Cody Gilbert, 43, of Moose Lake, who reported his property taxes have doubled in the seven years since he’s owned his home. Gilbert was comparing how the levy on property owners is used to balance ju...

After more than 105 years, the Farmers Co-op in Wright is now for sale. It was a difficult decision for the board of directors, but future plans need to be made. The store is still up and running as usual, but things may change if a buyer steps forward or a new manager can be hired. Just stop in the store if you need more information, and remember to shop locally. Our community depends on it. The Young Old Timers group will meet at the Cardinal Court at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec 10. RSVP with...

  • He's taxed with improving the tax base

    Brady Slater|Nov 29, 2024

Every election season, candidates for county office talk about their desire to expand the tax base so that county expenses can be spread across a wider swath of property owners. Growth outpacing expenses would lower individual taxes, which have only risen in recent years. But those are campaign promises. Reality offers a more difficult picture. To learn more about how well Carlton County is positioned for growth, the Pine Knot met this week with one of the primary people responsible for it,...

  • Letter to the Editor: Reed already working for county residents

    Nov 29, 2024

Carlton County commissioner-elect Dan Reed is not losing time in his efforts to fulfill electoral promises. On Saturday, Nov. 23, Reed buttonholed Minnesota’s U.S. Senator Tina Smith at a conference in Minneapolis and secured a future meeting to discuss federal funding for long-delayed improvements in a stretch of Minnesota Highway 73 at mile markers 18, 19, and 24 in Kalevala and Eagle townships south of Cromwell. Reed was attending the annual convention of the Minnesota Farmers Union where Sen. Smith had just given brief remarks on the r...

  • Students speak out in Carlton

    Ted Lammi|Nov 22, 2024

Nearly 40 people filled the Carlton library for Monday's Carlton School Board meeting as superintendent Donita Stepan continued her advocacy of a merger with Barnum. But not before a large group of students stood to address the school board, most of them members of the Raptors cross country team, which competed at State earlier this month. Wrenshall junior Isabel Riley addressed the board on behalf of her team, pointing to the success of the Carlton/Wrenshall sports teams and what it has meant....

  • City honored for conservation efforts

    Jana Peterson|Nov 22, 2024

This year's Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District Outstanding Conservationist award was not presented to a person, rather the award went to an entire department. The public works department for the city of Cloquet was recognized by the Carlton SWCD on Nov. 12 for going "above and beyond" in implementing numerous conservation projects. Those projects included working with the SWCD to manage more than 10 acres of buckthorn and other invasive species on city property with the help of the...

  • Cromwell-Wright season ends at State

    Dwight Cadwell|Nov 15, 2024

The Cromwell-Wright football team entered the state 9-player quarterfinals with a good feeling after a Section 5 championship win over defending state champion Nevis a week prior. Fertile-Beltrami dashed that groove Thursday night in Moorhead, handing the Cardinals a 48-7 defeat. The Falcons cruised with star running back Isaiah Wright, who rushed 10 times for an amazing 292 yards and four touchdowns, including the first play from scrimmage from 61 yards out. Wright would score on other runs of...

It’s been 34 years since Nov. 10, 1990, since our son Garrie was shot in the face during the opening of deer hunting season. He sustained a broken jaw, but was able to walk out of the woods and get to the waiting ambulance. He had to have surgery and ended up with three metal plates and eight screws in his jaw. They are still there, and will be for the rest of his life. We thank God for his survival. Enjoy the second week of deer camp, and stay safe. The Cromwell Area Community Club’s hun...
