Congratulations to Tom Gervais on being recognized for excellence in leadership at the Cromwell-Wright Fire District’s annual get-together April 26. Tom’s leadership style is a steadfast commitment to serving others with integrity, and he is an inspiration and example of true leadership excellence. It was so great to see the wonderful photographs and paintings at the Pine Knot office in Cloquet last Friday evening. The exhibit will be up for several weeks, so stop in to take a gander at the...
To honor and celebrate Earth Day, 28 hearty souls met on Saturday morning at the public water access on Eagle Lake in Cromwell for a roadside cleanup. The participants belong to Facebook group known as the Friends on Eagle Lake. The temperature was in the high 20s, but we had delicious hot coffee and donuts provided by the Northern Grind LLC coffee hut in Cromwell. Keeping warm was a challenge. Event chair Ragan Balzer had plotted out sections on Carlton County Road 123 for the pickup groups to...
In announcing he won’t seek reelection in November, Gary Peterson unofficially kicked off the local election season Monday during the Carlton County board meeting. “It’s time for me to graduate from my county commissioner job,” said Peterson, a longtime educator who still substitute teaches in the area. Peterson, 71, will have served 12 years, or three full terms, on the board by the time his term representing western Carlton County wraps up at the end of the year. “Twelve years is long enou...

Following the great success of its bird exhibit two years ago, The Knot gallery opened its "Fish and Fowl" exhibit to a crowd of local art fans Friday evening. Work by eight local artists and photographers are on display, some for sale. The artworks are unique, as are the people who created them. Exhibiting for the first time at the Knot gallery is award-winning fish artist Stuart Nelson, whose remarkably detailed paintings of fish bring them to life. "I've always done a lot of art and living on...
Jon Malcolm Swenson, 91, of Cromwell passed away Monday, April 22, 2024, in his home with loving family by his side. Jon was born Aug. 8, 1932, to Enock and Olga Swenson on a farm in Kandiyohi County. Jon was a farmhand for his uncle during high school. He graduated from Willmar schools in 1950 and entered the U.S. Army March 10, 1951, as an Army infantry corporal. He left the service on Feb. 17, 1954. Jon worked for the railroad after the Army while attending college at St. Cloud State College...
This past March, the Cromwell-Wright senior high choir had the privilege of embarking on a trip to honor veterans, a trip they’d been planning since October of last year. The endeavor included a trip to the Sacred Heart recording studio in Duluth on Saturday to record original songs honoring veterans, a tour at the state capitol, where they sang those songs in the rotunda and others on the capitol steps, and a plan to sing at an event honoring Vietnam War veterans in Forest Lake on Sunday. It w...
The Carlton County board is often audience to presentations on everything from treating invasive spongy moths to what the county's housing needs look like. Recently, the board heard a pair of presentations from local officials: an annual report from the Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District on April 2 at the committee of the whole meeting, and another April 9 about how the county is spending its portion of opioid settlement money. The information-gathering sessions proved fruitful, presen...

They've been friends since they were both in kindergarten at Jefferson Elementary School on Eighth Street and Cloquet Avenue in Cloquet. Now, after roughly 70 years, they volunteer together at the Clothing Depot in Cromwell. Dardanell "Beanie" Randa and Jayne Hakamaki have been fixtures and leaders in the Cromwell area for years. Unfortunately for many of its devoted customers, plans call for the nonprofit organization to close its doors in August. Their paths have crossed and separated many...
Congratulations to David Finnila of Wright, on being inducted into the 2024 Minnesota State Auctioneers Association. The Reinhardt Auction Service employee attended auctions in his high school years, and he found that they needed help, and that’s where the seed was planted. You can read the full story in the most recent Reinhardt Auction bill. Our sympathies to the family of Stephanie Larson, 37, who died on April 14, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Her parents are Todd and DiAnn Larson of Cromwell. The Cromwell Area Community C...
Our sympathies to the family of Judith (Anderson) Miller, who passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024, in Cromwell. She was 104 years old. Judy was well-known for her mastery of the organ and piano. Music was an important part of her life. She became the organist for First Lutheran Church in Meadowlands at age 14 in 1934, and continued playing for 74 years. A celebration of Judy’s life will be held at a later date at First Lutheran, where she was a lifetime member. Atkins Northland Funeral H...
A five-year plan for roughly 64 miles worth of paving and other road and bridge projects was outlined to the Carlton County board on Tuesday. The tentative list of projects presented to the committee of the whole included only a half-mile of roadway reconstruction work this summer, on 22nd Street from Washington to Prospect avenues in Cloquet, along with a number of repavement projects moving forward. The longest stretch, 9 miles of County Road 6 to Barnum, is scheduled for 2028 and will...
I am back from a trip to San Jose, California to visit Curtis and Steven, and my sister’s niece and family. My sister Margaret, and her daughter Tamilee and her husband Craig, and I were there March 14-25. We were a bit concerned about flying back from the San Francisco airport, but all went on schedule. The ride back to Margaret’s went OK since there wasn’t much snow on the roads until we got to the Moose Lake area. From that point, because we know how to drive in Minnesota in the winte...
Thank you to Jennie Hanson, Wright/Cromwell News columnist, for reminding us about the Little Red Schoolhouse on the Carlton County Fair grounds in Barnum. I remember visiting the schoolhouse as a kid with my siblings during the fair. It is hard to believe that all student grade levels attended school in such a small building. Volunteers are asking for donations to purchase books and school supplies to give to kids during the Carlton County Fair held in August. Donations can be sent to CCRE c/o...
A photo featuring the 1931 Cromwell girls basketball team in the March 8 issue brought accolades on Facebook, a visit from Clarence Badger with an old Cromwellian magazine, and a phone call from June (Kingsley) Collman, whose mother, Blanche Line, was the top scorer in 1931. Collman said her mom had been playing defense until someone got sick and she was moved to center. That meant she could finally shoot and was a lucky change for Cromwell. According to the March 1931 Cromwellian, Line played...
For 80 years, local residents have been asking for a Minnesota Highway 73 upgrade, specifically for the eight miles of the two-lane highway south of Cromwell. "That road in the present condition is dangerous," said former firefighter/EMT Bob Hattenberger, speaking at a recent Highway 73 Action Committee meeting. "A response by EMTs and ambulances has no place to park and those there trying to do their job are chancing injury while on the scene." Others voiced frustrations at a Minnesota...
Early on Monday, March 11, Cromwell-Wright High School singers boarded a big yellow bus headed for the Crosby-Ironton School to participate in the annual Minnesota State High School League choral contest. The students had been preparing for months, receiving solo, duet, and ensemble instruction from MaryRose Varo, Cromwell-Wright's energetic and accomplished vocal teacher. On the piano, Cromwell-Wright's Macie Lind and I served as accompanists, rehearsing with soloists and singers of duets and...
With a snowstorm looming, the Polar League high school track season kicked off indoors Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Although no team scores were kept, local track and field athletes impressed in both the boys and girls divisions. The boys 60-meter dash featured some of the top local talent in the area. Esko's Koi Perich just nosed out Kaden Robbins of Moose Lake/Willow River to grab the win. Both Perich and Robbins were timed at 7.25 seconds with Jaxsyn Schmidt of ML/WR...
Salutations from sunny California. It’s been sunny every day so far, but I will come home to snow. The next Young Old Timers meeting and gathering is at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9 at the Cardinal Court. The Lake Country Power district meeting begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 4 at the Cromwell Pavilion. A light meal will be served. Cloquet Community Education is sponsoring a trip to the Plymouth Playhouse in the Twin Cities area on April 24 to see the comedy, “Til Beth Do Us Part.” It is about...
Last month, when I was at the Carlton County Historical Center perusing old Cloquet skiing information for a story, director Carol Klitzke brought me a big box of files she asked me to review. They were scrapbooks from the 1950s, donated by legendary Cloquet coach Angelo Pergol and his wife, Blanche. It was a perfect record of Pergol's team coaching heroics. There were newspaper clippings, congratulatory letters, telegrams - wow, telegrams - testimonials, birthday cards, speaking invitations,...
On behalf of the Carlton County Retired Educators and ADK Sorority, we are requesting funds to buy school supplies and books to give out to the children and youth at the Carlton County Fair held in August at the Barnum fairgrounds. We volunteer all four days of the fair at the Little Red Schoolhouse, welcoming all the folks who stop in during the fair. We also clean the building, desks, slate chalkboards and windows, and generally keep the building in order. We also maintain the many displays, on the walls and bulletin boards, of the Carlton Co...
After flirting for weeks with a resolution that calls for wolf management in the state, the Carlton County board voted unanimously Tuesday to appeal to federal and state legislators to delist gray wolves from endangered species protection. The board agreed to send letters to Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, as well as Rep. Pete Stauber, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and local state legislators, Sen. Jason Rarick and Rep. Jeff Dotseth. "We are hopeful that you will support this effort to delist...
He gave it the old college try. But, they say, when you take on the bull, you get the horns. Or, in social media circles, and toned down for a family newspaper: Mess around and find out. There may be a new old saw: Take on the Iron Range and its taconite money, and you get the tailings. Alas, Sen. Jason Rarick, Carlton County’s representative in the Minnesota Senate, was awash in all of these sentiments last month when he dared to change the way of life on the Iron Range. If you recall, Rarick penned a bill this session that would expand the ...
