A stifling defense helped the Esko girls basketball team to slowly pull away with a 59-48 road win over Cromwell-Wright Monday night in Cromwell. "Esko is long and athletic, and we did not pass the ball well against their zone, which created way too many turnovers," said Cards coach Jeff Gronner. While Gronner's squad struggled to hold onto the ball, Esko was reaping the rewards of their defense. "Our defense was very good and disruptive tonight," said Esko coach Sue Northey after the game.... Full story

Over the years, Cloquet resident Clarence Badger has told stories of playing basketball at the old Civic Center where the fire station now sits. He shared photos of his uncles returning from World War II and partying in the Cromwell bars with happy friends. Of Pinehurst Park in the 1940s and '50s, he wrote: "The building that I used most was the large one where we would roller skate one or two days a week in a huge building that sat near what the tennis courts are today. The Wilsons would come... Full story
The ballots are in the mail for the Minnesota presidential primary. They came in the mail in Beseman Township and probably several others. The Minnesota primary is on March 5, 2024, so the ballots need to arrive before that date; and, remember, you must vote Democratic, Republican, or the Legal Marijuana Now party, so you can’t split your vote. There is an updated story in the Duluth News Tribune about the highway Gordon Bushnell tried to make and promote north of Tamarack and Wright. It was i...

More than 50 people turned out for the Barnum school board meeting Tuesday, the majority in a show of support for school bus drivers. The crowd came as the board considered contracting with a private company for transportation services. It's something the district began exploring last summer, when it was down to three bus drivers. It takes eight to drive all the Barnum routes. By the start of the school year, there were four. Now, the district is up to six with the potential return of a...
Things could not have gone any better for the Moose Lake/Willow River boys basketball team in their matchup against Carlton/Wrenshall Friday night. The Rebels shooting was beyond hot as they opened up a massive halftime lead on their way to an 84-40 win in Willow River. "We had a big start to the game and shot the lights out," said Rebels coach Paul Dewey. "I was a little surprised, because we hadn't been shooting that well and then we came out in that first half and lit it up." The Rebels... Full story

My office is in the old Cloquet Co-op building in Esko, and it carries a lot of history. The thing is built solid. Those Finlanders obviously expected the building to be around for a hundred years or more. It’s tight, too, not drafty at all. So many people have stopped in over the years to reminisce about the old co-op. I feel like I’ve been here since the 1950s, when it was built. It carried groceries, of course, but also hardware, sewing stuff, farm supplies, and some clothing. And yes, to... Full story

The Barnum bus drivers continue to struggle with being short-staffed. The ultimate solution would be to hire two additional bus drivers. The district is considering an alternative solution that is concerning the bus drivers and the community. The district is proposing to sell its bus fleet to a private busing company. Most of the current drivers are Barnum graduates and/or have children connecting them to the district. They care about our school and our children, but are unwilling to work for a private for-profit company, as they will lose... Full story

It's hard to believe, but Noah Parker has been the CEO of a thriving Highway 5, Carlton County seasonal business for 10 years ... after all, he's only 23. "I was 13 and asked my dad if he could give me money to go and see a movie," Parker said. "He told me, 'all the money you need is out here in the yard in the grass.' I didn't know what he meant." His dad then told him that he'd have to work hard, but could make plenty of spending money by picking and selling nightcrawlers to prospective... Full story
