  • New board leader: Housing, broadband are focus

    Brady Slater|Jan 5, 2024

The Carlton County board ushered in the new year with its annual meeting and changing of leadership in the chair position. Last year's chair, Dick Brenner, nominated Susan Zmyslony to succeed him and she earned a unanimous vote Tuesday at the Transportation Building in Carlton. "Thank you; I appreciate it," said a humbled Zmyslony before immediately turning to the agenda. Zmyslony had mentioned Brenner during the final meeting of last year, Dec. 26. "I'd like to take this opportunity, Dick, to...

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 5, 2024

The Wood City Classic boys basketball tournament featured two top local teams. Cromwell-Wright came into the tournament undefeated as one of the area's top Class A teams, while Cloquet entered with a 3-4 record after opening with one of the toughest schedules in the area in Class AAA. Tournament play began as the Cardinals took the floor against the larger Cloquet school. In the end, the Lumberjacks pulled away to an 80-56 win on Dec. 27. The 'Jacks went on to win their second game as well in...

  • Cards march to Wood City title

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 5, 2024

The Wood City Classic girls basketball tournament was good to one local team last week and not so good to another. Cromwell-Wright came in and gathered a pair of wins to take top honors in the tournament, while the previously undefeated Lumberjacks were shocked in back-to-back games and went winless in their own tournament. The Cardinals opened play with an impressive 71-62 win over Section 7AAA power Rock Ridge as five players hit double digits in scoring. Jill Anderson scored 12 points while K...

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jan 5, 2024

Hey, it's the start of another year. We have almost made it into the first quarter of this century. I have so much to be thankful for. It's great to be with family and friends and especially enjoying our mild weather. I've been busy since Curtis and Steven got here on Dec. 22. We did all the Christmas stuff with family and friends, went out for a few meals, a Pine Knot party, and I had my latest infusion. All my bloodwork came back great. I've gotten so many great Christmas cards and letters....

  • Wrenshall schools levy set within $4K of last year

    Dec 22, 2023

The Wrenshall school board approved a 2024 levy nearly identical to its previous figure, $1,513,112 — some $4,557 less than the current levy. Superintendent Jeff Pesta called it a “negligible reduction,” during Monday’s Truth in Taxation hearing conducted at the school. “It’s very small when you are considering it on a half-a-million dollars,” Pesta said. The district’s budget for 2024 is $6.5 million, made up of mostly per-pupil state aid funding, along with levy and federal dollars. No community members spoke during the hearing. A thir...

  • Unpacking the county levy, up 3.99%

    Brady Slater|Dec 22, 2023

More people phoned Carlton County to complain about tax increases than attended the Dec. 12 Truth in Taxation hearing. More than 30 people called the county to deliver messages about “unsustainable” increases, or to say, “you’re taxing us out of our home,” said auditor/treasurer Kevin DeVriendt. Only about a half-dozen people spoke briefly during the hearing, and only one rose to the dais to plead his case. “This is the kind of increase that’s not treating our elderly population with respect or dignity,” said Jim Kuklis, who owns Trails Edg...

  • WRIGHT/CROMWELL NEWS

    Jennie K. Hanson|Dec 22, 2023

Here it is, almost the last week of the year. It’s been an interesting year for me, especially since I have undergone treatment for breast cancer starting in April 2023. I never felt devastated when I got the news initially and still don’t feel like it’s real. Just another health issue that I have had to deal with. So far, the treatments have gone well, and all I have left now are Keytruda infusions once every three weeks and watching my blood clotting numbers weekly. I have had wonderful docto...

  • Official clarifies 'boycott' hunt comment

    Brady Slater|Dec 15, 2023

Boycott the deer hunt? That was a suggestion from Carlton County commissioner Gary Peterson last week, during a widely attended meeting in Carlton about wolves and their supposed impact on the declining deer population. Peterson was quoted by a Duluth media source as telling the crowd of roughly 300 attendees, "Boycott the deer season," as a way of hitting the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in its pocketbook. When reached for further comment this week about his suggestion, Peterson...

  • Lumberjacks hold off pesky Cardinals

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 15, 2023

Anticipation was high in the Cromwell High School gymnasium Tuesday when Cloquet and Cromwell-Wright girls basketball teams met on the hardwood. The Lumberjacks came into the game with a 4-0 record, while the Cardinals were 5-1. Something had to give. "It is always just a great atmosphere when we go to Cromwell," said Cloquet coach Heather Young. "The fans are loud and they are right on top of you, which makes for fun basketball." Cloquet had to withstand a furious second-half comeback by the Ca...

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 8, 2023

When Barnum and Cromwell-Wright boys basketball teams tipped off Tuesday, the crowd was large and raucous as fans anticipated an intense matchup of two perennial Polar League powers. But the Cardinals rode a quick flurry of points in both halves to gain a 64-58 victory at home. "I liked how we came out and played fast against them early," said Cards coach Bill Pocernich. "Dylan Nyberg got hot for us and we just kind of took off." Early in the first half, Cromwell-Wright rode the outside...

Thirty-two homesteads in Progress Township are set to receive notice by mail of a pending Carlton County board vote regarding an elk reintroduction pen proposed to be located there. Saying they wanted to collect public input by those most closely affected, county commissioners unanimously tabled a vote Monday that would have addressed the pen. Instead, commissioners agreed to alert residents of the possibility and give them time to appear at the next board meeting, 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Carlton County Transportation Building. “I just want the p...

  • On The Mark: New septic install is no small feat

    Ann Markusen|Dec 1, 2023

The Walli family home, just northwest of the city of Cromwell, required a septic system redo, which has consumed our lives for some time. The project called for both intelligent labor and impressive machinery, including two backhoes and a vintage dump truck. We started this summer by logging off the larger trees, mostly birch and poplar. We tossed the long skinny boughs downhill like javelins. The larger trunks Rod cut to manageable lengths - more or less than 2 feet - with his chainsaw. We...

The weather has been so nice that my son mowed the lawn today. The grass had gotten long, and it sure looks much better now. I don’t think we have ever mowed the lawn this late in November. A few days ago I couldn’t find my cell phone and I knew it was on silent, so even if I tried to call it from the landline, I knew I wouldn’t find it. So I called my son in California and asked him where it was. He has an app on his phone for finding where I am and was able to tell me the phone was in the k...

  • Debate flares over outside contracts

    Brady Slater|Nov 17, 2023

A Carlton County board meeting flared hot Tuesday, when commissioner Tom Proulx and county staff squared off over the use of contracted social work. Despite a 4-1 vote affirming the use of contracted social workers to address a surge in disability services and long-term elder care cases, the preceding debate stirred tensions at a time of union contract negotiations. Proulx first squared off with public health and human services director David Lee over the issue. “What would happen if we said no?” asked Proulx. “I would have to come back and a...
