  • Korby's Connections: Cromwell's basketball history is legendary

    Steve Korby|Oct 13, 2023

I attended the annual Harvest Festival at the Cromwell pavilion a few weeks ago. Scheduled for the first weekend after Labor Day every year, the festivities drew a good-sized crowd. Area residents were happy to get together and laugh, especially with the construction and its detours on Highway 210 now completed for the year. My resistance level being low, I sat next to my Eagle Lake neighbor at a picnic table to get details about the piece of pumpkin pie and ice cream he was sampling. It looked...

  • On The Mark: Fall is fleeting, but oh, so lovely

    Ann Markusen|Oct 6, 2023

Autumn has been my favorite month since I was a child. I loved the bursts of orange and yellow. Raking up the leaves in our small Minneapolis yard. Piling them to jump in with neighbor kids. Putting on our tweener (between seasons) jackets. Feeling the chill on my cheeks. Anticipating the applesauce and cider my mom and dad were cooking up in the kitchen. And looking forward to seeing my schoolmates again. We're living on the crest of a glacial hill, with a moraine sloping down toward the west,... Full story

  • Dollar store stakes a claim in Barnum

    Brady Slater|Sep 29, 2023

Sometime in winter 2024, the city of Barnum will be less of a food and retail desert than it is. Dollar General is moving onto Main Street, with construction already begun on a store which figures to include staples such as milk. While not a grocery store, Dollar General will fill a longtime void in a community that sees its residents travel to Moose Lake, Cloquet and beyond for merchandise such as cleaning supplies, health and beauty products, stationery, seasonal decorations, and some snacks...

  • Raptors continue to learn despite routs

    Kerry Rodd|Sep 29, 2023

When Cromwell-Wright and Carlton/Wrenshall took the field on Friday night, both teams knew the Cardinals were the heavy favorite. The Raptors are trying to meld a program together, while the Cards are one of the top nine-man teams each year in northern Minnesota. When the dust cleared, the Cards had won 76-0, but the Raptors had earned the respect of the opposition. "Brent had his kids playing hard and excited to play football," said Cardinals coach Jeff Gronner. "For us, our kids have never... Full story

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Sep 29, 2023

With the leaves turning color and with cooler days and nights, we know that fall is truly in the air. Folks are busy getting their yards ready for winter and planting all those bulbs so we have flowers in the spring. The apple trees have produced bumper crops in many areas, so lots of pies and crisps will be enjoyed this fall too. Congratulations to Gary Lott and Shauna Buelt of Wright on their recent marriage on Sept. 23, 2023. They were married underneath the trees beneath a canopy in their...

Our sympathies to the family of 22-year-old Brock Hascall of Wright, who died when his car was hit by a train on Sept. 9. The collision occurred about 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Lammi Road and Minnesota Highway 210 in Sawyer Township, according to the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office. Here is what his family shared on Facebook: “To say we are all devastated is an understatement, however, we now know exactly how many people he touched in his short time here on earth. The outpouring of mes...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Sep 15, 2023

The Harvest Fest last weekend in Cromwell seemed to be a huge success. Thanks to all the volunteers and attendees. And they had the most unusual parade this year. There was only one unit this year. But it sure was special, as the grand marshal, Jon Swenson Sr., accompanied by his family, was on an old-fashioned wagon with sides, and it was pulled by an old Ford tractor. Jon sure deserved this honor! The United Methodist Church in Cromwell is having a special event at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16: Church and Chili will include a bonfire fire...

  • Labor Day wildfire under control

    Mike Creger and Joe Bowen|Sep 8, 2023

You could say that parts of Carlton County lucked out this past Labor Day weekend. Things could have been much worse. Days after a swath across northern Minnesota, including all of the county, was designated in the "extreme drought" category, we were hit with record high temperatures over the holiday weekend. Drought conditions lingering into the fall are not common in the region. Infamously, the region also received what would have been declared an "extreme" level of dryness in the fall of... Full story

  • Brickyard Days, Cromwell Harvest Fest are here

    Jana Peterson|Sep 8, 2023

Both Wrenshall Brickyard Days and the Cromwell Harvest Festival return this weekend, bringing a shot of community togetherness. In Wrenshall that togetherness comes with a game of cow patty bingo. Wrenshall cheer coach and Brickyard Days organizer Jolene Johnson explained the process behind the unusual game of chance, which involves a student walking a cow over a giant grid with 200 squares. “One of our students will halter-walk a cow around all the squares, whatever square the cow does its b... Full story

Up to a dozen hot air balloons (and their pilots) will convene there Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, for the 2023 Kismet in Carlton Hot Air Balloon Festival. • On The Mark: Summer brings outside work, beauty

    Ann Markusen|Sep 8, 2023

It’s been a long and challenging summer in our part of Carlton County. So little rain, so many detours on Highway 210. Not even one swim in a lake! We’ve made up for it with home improvements. These include installing a badly needed new septic system in a new location. That meant lots of oak and poplar to harvest and lots of good thigh and upper body work for the physique! Throwing the smaller lengths like javelins into the surrounding woods. Piling chain-sawed logs in two-foot lengths into the... Full story
