One team is learning to play together for the first time while the other school returns six players who either started full- or part-time last season. Such was the case when Carlton/Wrenshall hosted the first home game in their cooperative's history Aug. 31 against an experienced Cromwell-Wright team. Cromwell/Wright swept the match by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-17. "Right now, we are just trying to figure things out," said Raptors coach Barb Soukkala. "We have to be patient and try to fit...

Because of Labor Day weekend, I had to get this news out earlier than usual so thought I’d bring you up to date on my medical issues. I’m back home now for a few days. I’m wearing a drain for my mastectomy, which has to be emptied two or three times a day. I have to record the amount of drainage so the doctor can tell when it’s time to remove it. The drain on my colon was taken out during the mastectomy, so at least I have only one to worry about. Now I have to wait for the doctor’s report on...
It's nice to open a football season at home. What wasn't so nice for Cromwell-Wright last Thursday was its opponent, defending Section 5 nine-man champion Ogilvie. While the Cardinals played tough, the Lions pushed through for a 42-21 win. "They returned eight of nine starters on defense and seven starters on offense," said Cardinals coach Jeff Gronner. "They are big and physical and we knew they'd be tough." Cromwell-Wright gave the Lions everything they could handle and then some as they...

Local high school cross country runners got a chance to shake off the rust last Thursday with the annual Chub Lake meet, which is all about having fun and getting a chance to run. "This is not your typical meet," said meet organizer Jerimy Hallsten of Esko. "I inherited the meet from Jerry Zimney, Mike Bushey and Tim Lindquist and I am sure they inherited running the meet from others before them, but regardless, it is a relaxed event for everyone." Each coach times their own runners and there is...
I’m sure that as you are reading this, you are thankful for the completion of the two box culverts between Cromwell and Wright. I had to take the detours only occasionally, but now that I don’t have to, I sure am thankful for the direct route to Cromwell from my home in Wright. I’m sure there were many folks who had to take the detours almost every day on their way to work or other appointments. I’m proud to announce that Cromwell mayor Sharon Zelazny received the 2023 Carlton County Outstanding Senior award at the Carlton County fair on Aug....

By the time most of you read this, I will have undergone a mastectomy and hopefully will be on the way to a full recovery. This has been a long journey, but with the help of my friends and family it was much easier. I feel the support from so many, and now it’s on to better days. Have you noticed that everyone on Center Road has new mailboxes as of August 14? This mailbox replacement was part of the deal when the road was retarred. Sure looks nice and I’m sure it’s much easier for mail deliv...
If there is another high school football team more excited about the upcoming season than Carlton/Wrenshall you'd be hard pressed to find them. After taking a year off from varsity play due to low participation numbers, playing just a junior varsity schedule, the Raptors will once again hit the field as a varsity nine-man program. "Everything came together last year just fine," said Raptors coach Brent Pokornowski. "The whole program is excited about the upcoming season and the guys are working...
They still haven't accepted their Olympic silver medals. The 1972 U.S. men's basketball team lost to the Russians by a point in the championship game in what was a highly controversial and contested last minute of play. Up to that point, the United States, in the days of all-college rosters, had never lost an Olympic basketball game. Team captain Kenny Davis included language in his will preventing his children from ever accepting the silver medal. The team members have met several times since t...
Cromwell mayor Sharon Zelazny and Wrenshall resident Harold Ankrum were recognized as the 2023 Carlton County Outstanding Seniors for 2023 on Friday, Aug 18, during Senior Day at the Carlton County Fair. Harold Ankrum is well-known in the Carlton-Wrenshall area as the longtime owner of Harold's Service just west of the Carlton County Courthouse. He is in the process of selling the business. Yet, besides helping stranded motorists, Ankrum is noted for turning "fiascos into fortunes" for cancer...
The Mike and Jen Olesiak farm of Sawyer and the Dahl farm in Wright - owned by Cindy Dahl Jokinen - are both being recognized as Carlton County Century Farms for 2023. Qualifying farms have been in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years and are 50 acres or more. The two family farms will be recognized at the Carlton County fair at noon today, Friday, along with this year's outstanding senior citizens. They join a long list of century farms in the county. Barb Olesiak Dahl shared the...
They didn't start out with winning in mind. But as the Small Town Kids team morphed and the Ragnar road race got closer, the team from Carlton County started looking pretty good. So good, in fact, they learned upon arrival they were seeded No. 1. Ragnar is a relay race, which starts near the capitol building in St. Paul and finishes in the Duluth Rose Garden. In between, racers take turns running on country roads, highways, the Munger Trail through Mahtowa and Carlton, Skyline Parkway in Duluth...
It’s been a few weeks since I have been home due to my cancer treatments and colon infection. But I am home now and it feels good to be back here. I have a lot to catch up on, but day by day and hour by hour I will get things back in order. I am so thankful to all my friends and family who have helped me during this time. Now I am facing surgery and hopefully will have a full recovery in the coming weeks. This was definitely not the summer I was looking for back in May, but I am thankful I d...

It’s been a couple of weeks since I have been able to get some news into my columns. It’s not because I didn’t want to but because I just couldn’t. I was in the hospital for 12 days in July and have been taking antibiotic treatments every day since for an infection in my colon. Hopefully that is cleared up and I can now proceed with the cancer surgery. It’s been a long-haul, but I’m looking forward to a full recovery in the near future. There was an annual Wright Co-op store meeting Aug. 2. As far as any other news in the area, I have been o...

Last week, hundreds of locals and visitors, some from abroad, journeyed to Duluth to celebrate Finnish culture and its enduring presence in our communities. It was challenging to choose among many options: talks, films, presentations, musical performances, dancing, Finnish food and drink. Husband Rod Walli and I chose to join the daylong bus trip up the North Shore, offered by University of Wisconsin-Madison professor emeritus Arnold Alanen. At the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, we...

The 58th Wrong Days in Wright was well-attended last weekend, from the steak fry, pie sale, rummage sale, and bingo on Friday to the Saturday morning parade and button drawing and then sporting events and music into the night. There will be a pop-up craft shop in Cromwell 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20 at Cardinal Chiropractic Center. Shop and support our area artists and crafters. To be a vendor, email [email protected]. My cancer journey is now well into three months of chemo treatments and other medical procedures. Now I am being...
