  • Korby's Connections: Greenhouse is quiet success off Hwy. 210

    Steve Korby|Jul 14, 2023

If you blink your eyes, you might miss it. I know I did, many times. Traveling west on Minnesota Highway 210, it's just past the Sawyer Store, about three miles on the left. A few years ago, the wild turkeys were thick in this area. Unfortunately, I hit one with my car, twisting my side mirror. I pulled to the side of the road to check out the damage and it was then that I saw the sign advertising "Bedding Plants," "Greenhouse," and, even better yet, "Sale." My wife, dog, and I were in no rush...

  • Weather is just fine for big Sawdust field

    Kerry Rodd|Jul 7, 2023

A year ago lightning, thunderstorms and horrific weather wreaked havoc on the Sawdust 5K in Cloquet, causing first-year race directors Julie and Sam Jacobson all kinds of problems. This time around, the July Fourth race couldn't have gone any smoother. It featured gentle weather and plenty of anxious runners gathering to run Cloquet's favorite summertime race. "Everything went super and there was a great turnout," Julie Jacobson said. "We had 272 runners signed up prior to the race and another... Full story

  • On the Mark: Freerange Films return to the barn this weekend

    Ann Markusen|Jun 23, 2023

Again this year, the Dugan family and friends host two nights of films in their Wrenshall barn. I’ve been enjoying this year’s slate of films on my computer. I can’t review them all in this slim column, but I’m sharing my favorites. The most spectacular is “Finding Her Beat,” a film made by Japanese, Canadian and American women learning and performing Taiko, a Japanese male art form that combines dance movements with banging a large vertical drum. The film opens with a Korean adoptee rai... Full story

Over the last four years the Section 7A baseball tournament has run through South Ridge. The road this season got a whole lot tougher on Tuesday when the Panthers lost their first game of the day, 6-4, to Cherry, sending them into the losers bracket. “Noah Sundquist is a good pitcher and he pitched well against us,” said South Ridge head coach Aaron Weber. “He kept us from getting any momentum and he pitched well enough to win that game.” Following the loss, the Panthers faced Ely in the nig... Full story

My week off from chemo seemed to be the longest week in a while because once you are on a weekly infusion schedule, taking a week off seems weird. But now I am back on a regular schedule for three more weeks. The infusions go well now that I have a port for the blood draws and infusions, so I’m back on track. I did shave my head before the last treatment as there was so much hair all over the house you would have thought I had a dog or cat here. Anyway, I got a wig and since I always wear a h...
