It was a sad farewell as we said “Godspeed” to Lutheran interim pastor Tim Berdahl. He has certainly been a shining light in our midst as he led our congregations through the recent months. We found out that we can function well with a part-time pastor and because of this, our lay leaders have stepped up and carried on in the absence of a full-time pastor. This really proves that the church is not a building, not the pastor, but it’s the people working together to bring the word of God to us an...

I sure hope you remembered to pay the first half of your property taxes by the 15th. Seems our obligation is to pay, pay, pay! But I do appreciate owning property and all the benefits of living in the country all these decades. My cancer update: I have now completed a couple of chemo treatments and will have a port put in, so, then I will sit back and see what comes. So far, except for the multiple needle jabs to try to find my veins, the treatments have been very relaxing; I just hope they...

The project to reconstruct the existing highway was designed to improve the ride for travelers and increase stormwater...

    Kerry Rodd|May 12, 2023

An eighth-grade pitcher for the Cromwell-Wright baseball team stepped up in a big way on Friday, May 5 in helping to lead the Cardinals to a 4-1 win over the Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors. Drew Nyberg was called on to step up for the Cards when starting pitcher Tate Bloomquist had a sore arm and had to leave the game in the third inning with the Cardinals leading 2-0. "Drew came up huge for us," said Cardinals coach Dean Levinski. "He went four innings and gave up just one run on a couple of hits...

My cancer journey has started in earnest now. Last week, I had my first chemo treatment, and this week I get chemo and a PET scan. Lots to absorb in the brain and body as this journey continues. Thanks for all your prayers and support. A beautiful memorial service for Don Oman was held May 6 at Bethany in Cromwell. Family and friends shared memories and gave thanks to his wife, Jeanne, for all the volunteer work they did in our community over the 15 years they lived on Cross Lake. Rest in peace, dear friend. Send cards of condolence to Jeanne O...

  • Carlton Happenings

    Leola Rodd|May 5, 2023

As Mother’s Day is fast approaching, this is a reminder to get that special mom in your life a very special gift. I have some suggestions that don’t necessarily cost a lot of money. Spend a day with Mom, doing what she wants or maybe cooking a nice meal for her. If gardening is her passion, purchase some seeds or flowers that Mom and you can plant together. Or just give Mom a call (no texts, please) to wish her Happy Mother’s Day on May 14. There are many upcoming events in the Carlton area:...

I just returned from a Happy Trails bus tour to Ohio and Kentucky to the Ark Encounter, Creation Museum, and the Cincinnati botanical gardens and zoo, and a 2-and-a-half-hour dinner cruise riverboat on the Ohio River. I have wanted to visit since I heard about the life-size Noah’s Ark. I did not travel with a roommate, but there were 28 of us on the bus, so I was able to meet many new folks who became friends along the way. Everyone was so friendly and sensitive to my health issues. Traveling b...

  • Wrenshall council scrutinizes ambulance service

    Brady Slater|Apr 28, 2023

The city of Carlton may have hit a speed bump last week on its way to adding two full-timers to its ambulance service. A skeptical Wrenshall city council heard Carlton’s proposal during a special meeting April 19, and Wrenshall’s five-member board remained noncommittal, telling Carlton it would have an answer following its May 3 council meeting. “Why does Carlton have to be in the ambulance business?” asked Wrenshall councilor Melvin Martindale. “You’re 1,100 people strong and you’re just not big enough to support (it) and you’re raisin...

Salutations, friends: I am now embarking on a journey that I am not looking forward to. As of a few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple-negative aggressive breast cancer, so I will be starting chemotherapy and getting a PET scan. Chemo will be once a week after that. I had to give up subbing for now, which hurts, as I love the students and staff and will really miss them. I never imagined I’d get cancer, but I caught it early and it is what it is, so I’m trying to stay positive. Thanks for all the words of encouragement and prayers,...

  • MnDOT hears plenty on shape of Hwy. 73

    Apr 21, 2023

About 75 people showed up at the Cromwell Pavilion April 12 to support the reconstruction of Minnesota Highway 73 south of Cromwell. Users of the road were invited by a survey group from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to find out what problems exist in the corridor from Kettle River to Cromwell. "It is easy to describe," local trucker and farmer Pat Messer said. "The road is not wide enough, there are no shoulders, the swamp road sections are too low and the high ground hills hamper...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie Hanson|Apr 21, 2023

The lawn in front of the Wright post office looks like a dried-up desert with all the weird trails the voles made as they crawled under the snow this winter. As soon as the snow melted, this phenomenon was revealed. Now you will have to wait until this latest snow melts before you can see it again. Our yard is so covered with pine needles and broken branches after this winter. It’s really a mess and will have to be picked up before any mowing can be done. By the way, remember “No Mow May.” Let’s let the pollinators have the dandelions and suc...

  • Sudden 70s strike snowpack, leading to flooding worries

    Mike Creger|Apr 14, 2023

One could easily mistake a northeastern Minnesota meteorologist for a sadist these days. Just two days after the messy April 4-5 snowstorm, followed by some slight signs of an actual spring, the National Weather Service in Duluth issued a report on the likely flooding that will occur in the region. It seems the winter of 2022-23 just won't relinquish its hold on the public conversation during a non-existent spring that had any children on an outdoor Easter egg hunt tromping over snow deeper...

  • Tiny Cromwell gets some national love

    Kerry Rodd and Mike Creger|Apr 7, 2023

Midway through the second quarter of the NCAA Division II women's basketball championship game, the announcers on the CBS Sports Network national broadcast mentioned Cromwell. The announcement likely caused cheers at many establishments in Carlton County that aired the title game Saturday afternoon. "I didn't realize they mentioned Cromwell,"...
