It's a fact: most golfers don't like being in sand traps or hitting the ball out of these hazards. But, if you must, the Black Bear golf course in Carlton is the place to show off your skills, just like the professionals. Here, beautiful white sand from Georgia is, indeed, the same as the picturesque sand found in traps at Augusta National Golf Course - the home of the Masters Tournament. The Black Bear golf course is located at the junction of Interstate 35 and Minnesota Highway 210. It is...
It was quite a first meeting for interim Ward 3 Cloquet city councilor Chris Swanson last Wednesday. The agenda appeared simple and uncontroversial. Then Ward 2 councilor Sheila Lamb made a motion to deny a routine donation from Enbridge Energy to the National Night Out celebration put on by Cloquet police, asserting that if the company's Line 3 pipeline goes through, sex trafficking will increase in Cloquet and other Carlton County communities. "A $1,000 donation is not worth putting a single...
The stalemate over a joint powers agreement between the Big Lake Area Sanitary District and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa required a mediation session this week. Results of that effort, which began Wednesday, were not available when this issue of the Pine Knot News went to press. The mediation was agreed upon by both bodies in an effort to finalize a deal that would allow a release of funding and construction of a new sewage collection system in the Big Lake area in order to...
It's fair time! With the official start of the 129th annual Carlton County Fair only a couple days away, on Tuesday the 4-H students were showing off their projects in hopes of impressing the judges enough to earn a spot down at the Minnesota State Fair. Each project eventually goes before a panel of judges who interviews the child and rank each project. The judge's job isn't easy, as each project must be checked and graded based on factors such as quality and the interview. The judges must...
Without much fanfare, David Danielson and David Hein made history last Wednesday. Danielson, a Fond du Lac band member and Vietnam veteran, sat on one side of a table, while the Korean vet and Veterans Administration loan officer, Hein, sat on the other. Between them they forged what will be a notable agreement: to finance a home mortgage for Danielson on tribal trust land. Hein explained that most conventional lenders won't make such a loan, because if the borrower defaults, they can't close...

"I waited as long as I could before getting too...
Somewhere deep in the Colorado Rockies is an unnamed gravel road that twists and turns on its way up past little-known Grayback Mountain. Indiana Pass crests at 11,910 feet right on this road, and the occasional travelers in their SUVs or pickup trucks often find it difficult to breathe. But the challenge of breathing at that altitude was made even more difficult for Cloquet-area resident and Fond du Lac Band member Alexandera Houchin. She was on Indiana Pass in late June this year "just riding...

These are hard times for the Brookston area. A young man who grew up there, age 16, was shot and killed in Duluth earlier this month. A young mother of five was found dead after going missing last week, and a 15-year-old boy died of unknown causes Friday. Bryan "Bear" Bosto, who manages the Brookston Community Center, said the community is mourning the losses. He hopes people will come together, and seek help from the grief counselors available at the community center. "There were three tragic...
In late May, Emily Swanson of Carlton’s Oldenburg House and I journeyed to Jackson, Miss., for a week of deep and lively conversations on how arts and culture transform our communities. Hundreds joined the two back-to-back conferences. One convened a decade’s worth of ArtPlace America’s grantees and admirers. The second, the Rural Summit, pulled together rural development folks from across the country. We competed to win workshop slots pondering how arts home-comers or newcomers, like us, can u...

Julian Kitto, Alijah Petite and Mikinaak visited Churchill Elementary School Friday, to wish the fourth-graders - who will attend middle school next year - a good journey through their education and their lives. Kitto and Petite both drum with other members of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, at home, at powwows and even over the lunch hour at Cloquet High School. Mikinaak is the name of the drum they brought to Churchill. In English, the name translates to "snapping turtle." "The...
Cloquet High School principal Steve Battaglia has no doubt in his mind which generation is being targeted by e-cigarette manufacturers. He has only to rattle off the flavors - Fizzy Lemonade, Arctic Air, Blue Razz Lemonade, Iced Pink Punch, Really Berry and Straw Nanners Ice - of the many confiscated products to make his point. Then there is the appearance factor. Very few look like cigar- ettes. Instead, they look like pens or pencils, lipstick containers, compacts, key chains, chargers,...
A BNSF Railway derailment Feb. 16 was caused by a broken wheel, BNSF reported to the Federal Railroad Administration. The broken wheel caused 40 (out of 121) loaded coal cars to derail from the train tracks about four miles west of Cloquet three months ago. Cleanup started almost immediately. The derailment dumped more than 4,000 tons of coal near or partially into the frozen St. Louis River. “BNSF conducts a thorough review of every incident because we want to understand what happened and why, and work to prevent it from happening in the f...
After years of study and infrastructure planning, the Big Lake Area Sanitary District is having trouble getting over the final hurdle in cleaning up a lake that is surrounded by failing residential sewer systems. The district has been trying to get the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Reservation Business Committee to sign on to a joint powers agreement that would start the flow of money and construction for a sewage collection plant with hookups around the lake. Earlier this year, the district board held emergency meetings in order to meet d...
Tribal, county and city leaders met Tuesday for what they hope will be the first of more collaborative meetings between the different governmental units. Discussion ranged over several areas. Carlton County board chairman Dick Brenner brought up continuing planning for a new county jail. Jail plans “We have looked at a number of jails including the newest jail in Chisago County,” Brenner said. “The funding package and the size of the jail are soon to be determined. The newest style of jail is based on pods.” Brenner explained that pods are gro...
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa purchased the 43-room AmericInn hotel at 1716 Highway 201 in Carlton, for $2.85 million from REETI, LLC on March 8, according to Carlton County records. According to Carlton County assessor Kyle Holmes, the Band now owns several properties along that section of Highway 210, including the Royal Pines Inn, the former Spirits gas station/restaurant and the Dons Dens property. All were purchased in separate sales over the past few years. The Fond du Lac band did not have any comment on the property...
When someone is looking to start or expand their business in Cloquet, they usually call City Hall first. If they do, they’ll be directed to Holly Hansen, Cloquet’s community development director. Holly Hansen has been with the city for over a decade, working behind the scenes (and in the forefront, too) to make sure Cloquet stays healthy, businesswise. She joined us on Harry’s Gang this week to explain what she does, how she does it, and what is happening around town. Many people are famil...
