After months of searching for a new fire chief, members of the Cloquet Area Fire District board decided to start over. They will reconsider the job requirements and administrative structure of the organization before interviewing any more candidates. The board made its decision at a special meeting Monday, June 29, after negotiations with candidate George Esbensen failed and Esbensen withdrew from consideration, and the succession committee put a different name forward, that of current CAFD...
As a child, Kevin Schroeder used to tag along with his dad as he headed to the Scanlon fire hall to work as a volunteer firefighter. Schroeder became a firefighter himself, first as a volunteer in Scanlon when he was 17 years old, then in Cloquet, where he rose through the ranks to captain, battalion chief and finally to fire chief of the state's first fire district. Next week will be Schroeder's last one as chief of the Cloquet Area Fire District - an entity he helped shepherd since he was...
Following two roundsa of interviews and months of searching, the Cloquet Area Fire District is still seeking its next fire chief. The CAFD board chose to not hire either of two initial finalists (out of 15 applicants) who interviewed in early April, admitting that the job description called for someone with skills far beyond the average fire chief. In late May, the board interviewed two more candidates: former Cloquet city administrator Brian Fritsinger and George Esbensen, who was fire chief...
Following interviews in April that resulted in a renewed and somewhat altered search for a new leader, Cloquet Area Fire District board members interviewed two new fire chief/CEO candidates on Wednesday. One of them, Brian Fritsinger, is familiar to Cloquet residents, as he led the city for nearly two decades as city administrator before taking a job as deputy county administrator in neighboring St. Louis County in 2017. Candidate George Esbensen currently works as the director of sales and...
Following interviews with the two finalist candidates for the position of Cloquet Area Fire District chief, members of the CAFD board opted to not hire either candidate, citing the difficulty of finding someone with the skill set to lead the district as both CEO and fire chief. Board chair Jim Langenbrunner said the board’s succession committee is shifting its attention to coming up with an interim plan to cover the fire chief position, as current fire chief Kevin Schroeder is retiring at the end of June. “Kevin is a very difficult person to...
Cloquet Area Fire District board members interviewed two finalists Tuesday for the fire chief position that will open up when Kevin Schroeder retires in June. It won't be easy, as evidenced by board member Bob DeCaigney's comment during the board's post-interview discussion that, according to the job description and duties, what they are really looking for is "Superman." A CAFD press release detailed the process so far: The search for a replacement began in late 2019, and the board hired Baker...
Cloquet hockey players Christian Galatz and Owen Carlson took some questions before Monday night's road game at Duluth East. Both can be considered stars on a team that is looking to make a strong push toward a state tournment berth this year. Christian Galatz Q Has the Jacks' challenging regular-season schedule prepared the team for the stretch run? A Yeah, it's definitely a tough schedule. We've come ready to play and had a good mindset every day. Q The Jacks' identity? A Offensive team,...
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the hockey rink at Cloquet's Athletic Park on 14th Street was a hopping spot. Ice skates weren't always required. On Monday evenings from January until March, the rink was reserved for broomball. Cloquet Community Education, led by director Gary Welton, organized and conducted a men's broomball league. Teams were mostly from Cloquet but there were some from Brookston, Grand Lake and other nearby communities. The Cloquet Broomball League was unique in that...
Lumberjacks senior goalie Owen Carlson makes a save against Eden Prairie's Ben Steeve at Eden Prairie Jan. 10. The Eagles squeaked by the Lumberjacks 3-2. Midway through the second period the 'Jacks trailed 3-0, but a goal by Cole Ketola in the second and a goal by Christian Galatz in the third pulled the visitors closer but the Eagles, a team that includes former Cloquet player Mason Langenbrunner, were able to hang on for the win. Carlson made 37 saves for CEC....

In a celebration of all things winter and Christmas in this part of the world, Cloquet residents could find many ways to meet with Santa Claus last week, eat, shop, decorate cookies, enjoy Christmas music, watch a good hockey game, and shop some more. Organizer Alyson Leno declared the annual Santa's Home for the Holidays a success, breathing a sigh of relief once the parade with all its lights wrapped up and the fireworks lit up the sky over downtown Cloquet Saturday night. Leno raced off to...
More than 100 years ago, a member of the Fond du Lac band pitched six innings for the Chicago White Sox … the same year he was deemed “unqualified” to play for the Cloquet baseball team. His name was William Cadreau. The right-handed pitcher is listed in the 1889 Census Roll of the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa, a 1-year old boy born to Antoine Cadreau and Louisa Naganab on Sept. 2, 1888, in Cloquet. William’s lineage appears to show he is the grandson of Chief Naganab of Fond du Lac, who sig...
Second-year Cloquet-Esko- Carlton boys' hockey coach Shea Walters says he's been impressed by his players' commitment to improving their craft this off-season. "The kids stayed very active in hockey all summer and fall, including some players who competed in the Elite League," said Walters, who guided CEC to a 14-12-1 record last season and a Section 7AA semifinal appearance. Last season, CEC was built for a strong run in the playoff, led by a handful of high-end players including three-year...
Cloquet High School grads Riley Into and Landon Langenbrunner are aiming to make it big in the music world, but they aren't taking what many consider the traditional route. They aren't playing bars or or college campuses or even raves - yet. In fact, the two musicians didn't even start by learning an instrument. That came later. "We picked up on instruments after the fact, more or less," said Into. "It was our love for the music that got us into this. Langenbrunner agreed, adding that they...
Former Cloquet hockey player Mason Langenbrunner announced via Twitter last week that he will be attending college and playing hockey for Harvard. In his tweet, Langenbrunner said, “I am extremely honored to announce my commitment to further my education and hockey career at Harvard University. I would like to thank my friends, family, coaches and teammates who hel...

Led by senior Peter Tomhave, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys tennis team is looking for big things this season. But the No. 1 singles player is just one of many strong players for the boys team that will be feisty and full of fight this season. "We have about 28 players on the team this year, which is up a few from last year," said CEC coach Derek Johnson. "We have some new juniors and seniors who are athletic and will definitely put up a fight even if they don't have the tennis experience."...
Three weeks ago the Minnesota Wilderness were poised to make a run in the standings, with the team tied for third in the NAHL’s Central Division and fresh off a sweep of the Bismarck Bobcats. Since then, the Wilderness have found wins hard to come by. The Cloquet-based team is 2-7-1 for the last 10 games and have fallen into fifth place — 10 points out of the last playoff spot. Central Division leader Aberdeen swept the Wilderness last weekend, outscoring them 8-1 in the two meetings. The Wil...
