Sectional volleyball action began Monday with No. 7 Barnum sweeping No. 10 Wrenshall in Section 7A south. It was a repeat of the matchup between the teams on Oct. 4, a 3-0 win for Barnum. A tripleheader of state tournament soccer games featuring local teams was scheduled to take place Thursday in the Twin Cities area. The teams are trying to win in the first round in order to advance to the semifinals at a warm U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis next week. For the fourth year in a row, the Cloquet girls soccer team is headed to State. In a frigid 7AA championship game Tuesday night, the Lumberjacks defeated the No. 1 seeded and host Grand Rapids, 4-2. After graduating 16 seniors a year ago, there was plenty of speculation the Cloquet-Esko- Carlton girl’s tennis team would be a pushover this season. One year removed from making it to the Section 7AAA finals, the Cloquet volleyball machine continued to crank out wins and headed into the last two weeks of the season with an impressive 18-5 record. Teams head into respective playoffs on equal footing Cloquet and Esko met early in the girls soccer season with the Lumberjacks coming out on top 5-2. The Cloquet football team hosted the Hermantown Hawks for homecoming on Friday, Sept. 30 - unfortunately it was the visitors who came out on top 28-14 after pulling away in the fourth quarter. The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton vs. Hermantown boys soccer game was played for more than bragging rights Saturday. The Lumberjacks entered the away game with an overall record of 10-2 and were leading the seeding race in Section 7AA. The Hawks were 9-4 and nipping at their heels. The Cloquet and South Ridge boys and girls cross country teams participated in the Lester Park Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 1 in Duluth. Both teams saw some success and both teams were able to learn more about what they will need to do this month to get ready for the section race at the end of the month. Lying in a hospital bed last Monday, Holly Goad told her youngest son, Perry, to keep up with football while she was there. Perry kept that promise. Holly died Thursday, Sept. 22, and the Cloquet senior played one of his best games Friday night, a contest the Lumberjacks won 14-8 over Duluth East. After nearly two years of searching for a new space, it took workers only 10 weeks or so to turn a former furniture store into a new home for the Cloquet Kids Corner and Li'l Lumberjacks Learning Center programs. The Cloquet girls soccer team has had a remarkable start to the season, entering Monday night's game against a tough Grand Rapids team with a 10-1 record. Two of the area's better volleyball teams hooked up last week when the South Ridge Panthers traveled to Esko to take on the Eskomos. While Esko pulled away to a 3-1 win, the fans of both teams were treated to an exciting volleyball exhibition. The annual match between Cloquet-Esko-Carlton and Duluth East finished with a dramatic 3-2 win for CEC on Thursday, Sept. 15. The 'Jacks had early trouble, with Greyhound senior Pete Onchwari scoring just 4 minutes into the game. Li’l Lumberjacks and Kids Corner are open for business at our new Pine Tree Plaza location. Thanks to much assistance from the Cloquet football team and National Honor Society, the physical moving of both programs began Sept. 1. The Li’l Lumberjacks Learning Center opened on Sept. 6, followed by Kids Corner on Sept. 7. Local cross country teams got a firsthand look at almost all the other teams in the area last Thursday at the Dan Conway Classic in Superior. Held at Pattison Park Golf Course, the Conway Classic was an important race on this year's running circuit because the Swain and the Milaca races have both been canceled. There is speculation that those races may not be brought back, so having the Classic was a vital event for local runners. Duluth East captured top honors in both the boys and girls races... Cloquet public school board members began their meeting Monday brainstorming possible incentives to promote job growth within their district following staffing shortages and resignation letters. Signing bonuses and more benefits for part-time employees were a few of the ideas talked about during the Monday, Aug. 8 meeting.
