For the first time since 2008, Cloquet will host the Section 7AA individual wrestling tournament this weekend. The individual portion of the tournament is held to determine the top two wrestlers in the section who will go on to the state tournament. The event starts Friday and runs through Saturday afternoon. “We are excited to host the tournament, and I really encourage people who have never seen a wrestling tournament to come and see what it is all about,” said Cloquet-Esko-Carlton wre...
In Cloquet, it isn't farfetched to have Olympic dreams. After all, Olympic Drive snakes around the land Joe Nowak convinced Northwest Paper to donate for a park, now home to ice arenas and a woodland park. Corey Millen and Jamie Langenbrunner played in the arenas when they were Lumberjacks. Millen was the first Cloquet hockey player to reach the Olympics, playing on the 1988 team. Langenbrunner played in the era when NHL players began competing. He was a last-second replacement on the 1998...
Sometimes an athlete just has a less than stellar day. Unfortunately for the Lumberjacks Nordic ski team, that happened to a few skiers Wednesday, Feb. 9 at the Section 7 Nordic ski meet. It meant the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Nordic ski season ended at sections, with no CEC athletes advancing to the state meet this week, also held at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. There were also other factors at play. First, the weather: Conditions were soft, making it harder to ski. Second, this was the first year of a...
Duluth Marshall proved to be too much for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team Saturday as the Hilltoppers rolled to a 5-1 Section 7A semifinal victory to eliminate the Lumberjacks from the playoffs. "At the end of the day, their skill just beat our defensive play," said CEC coach Courtney Olin. "We spent a lot of time practicing our systems and I genuinely feel our girls worked as hard as they could, but I think their skill just surpassed our systems and our defensive style of play." The...
Esko's Koi Perich poured in a school-record 50 points on Tuesday night to complete a season sweep of the Lumberjacks as the Eskomos finished with an impressive 93-68 home win. "Koi scored 45 in the last game against Hermantown and I had been joking with him that if he'd only hit more free throws, he would have scored 50," said Esko head coach Derek Anderson. "I didn't expect him to go out and get 50 the next game we played against a team that plays good defense." Esko sprinted out to an early...
Emily Regas competed at the Minnesota state high school Alpine ski meet Wednesday, as the sole Lumberjacks qualifier. Regas placed 29th out of 88 skiers at the state meet, with runs of 41.96 and 43.43 for a total score of 1:25.39. She placed sixth at the Section 7 meet last week to earn her way to the state meet, while the girls team placed fourth overall at sections. The CEC girls team is young, with no juniors or seniors, so expectations are that the squad will be very competitive for the...
Senior Dana Jones jumpstarted the offense and the entire team played stellar defense as the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team picked up a 4-0 quarterfinal win in the Section 7A playoffs Tuesday night over North Shore. After a scoreless first period, Jones scored on a shorthanded breakaway goal late in the second period to give the No. 3 seeded Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead over the No. 6 seeded Storm. "Dana's goal was a huge momentum turner and you could almost feel the pressure lift off our team,...
Lumberjacks alpine ski coach Ryan Zimny knew his girls team would be in the mix at sections, but he didn't know they would do as well as they did at Tuesday's Section 7A meet. The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls team placed fourth at Biwabik's Giants Ridge with 290 points, only four points behind third-place finisher Anoka. Duluth East placed first with 356 while Chisago Lakes came in second with 325. Zimny said it's the best team finish for CEC since the mid-2000s, when a CEC team took third. "They...
The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team held a three-goal lead on Monday night against Duluth East, but were unable to hang on as the Greyhounds scored in overtime to notch a 4-3 win at Northwoods Credit Union Arena. CEC tallied two goals on the power play early in the second period and then added yet another power play goal midway through the period as they built a 3-0 lead. The Greyhounds were able to score a pair of goals before the period ended to pull to within 3-2 and then tied the game...
Korryn Sorenson-Brock, 22, of Cloquet, passed away Jan. 29, 2022. She was born Jan. 13, 2000, in Edina, the daughter of Kenneth and Kerrie (Rice) Sorenson. Korryn lived in Andover until she was 5 and then moved to Cloquet. Growing up, Korryn played hockey for Lumberjacks hockey teams. Korryn was proud to receive her high school diploma in 2019. She...
With the season-ending championship events just around the corner in mid-February, the Lumberjacks Nordic ski teams got a good look at where they stand during the Duluth East Invitational held at Snowflake Nordic Center Friday. Ten of the 11 teams in Section 7 were competing, creating a showcase of the Nordic skiing talent in northeastern Minnesota. The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton varsity boys team finished fifth overall out of 10 teams, landing behind meet hosts and winners Duluth East, followed by...
In their 10 games leading up to last Thursday's matchup with Duluth Marshall, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team had struggled. They went 1-8-1 in that stretch and scored only 14 goals for an average of 1.4 goals per game. Last week the 'Jacks bounced back with a solid 4-2 road win over the Hilltoppers, followed by a Monday 4-1 road loss to Duluth East and Tuesday - in their best performance of the year - the Lumberjacks shut out Rock Ridge at home 3-0. "Against Marshall, we absolutely...
The Lumberjacks boys and girls alpine ski team has been busy this season, and the pace didn't slow down Monday when the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton competed in an eight-team meet at Mont du Lac Resort. "Training has been good lately," said head coach Ryan Zimny. "It was a bit of a tough start with the warm weather in November and December, but Mont du Lac did a great job filling in the hill once it got cold enough." On Monday, the girls team had three girls finish, with Emily Regas taking second,...
Former Lumberjacks and University of Minnesota Duluth star Karson Kuhlman faced a bad news, good news scenario this week. On Sunday, Kuhlman found out he was being put on waivers by the Boston Bruins. On Monday, he found out he was picked up by the Seattle Kraken. "I loved Boston, the fans and my teammates," Kuhlman said. "I am excited about the chance to play in Seattle and to try and build something special there." Kuhlman is in the second year of a two-year contract and will then become a...
This past week the Cloquet girls basketball team has notched wins over Esko, Crosby-Ironton, Hermantown and Barnum. The 'Jacks are an impressive 12-3 on the season and have not lost since losing the opening game of the Wood City Classic on Dec. 28, and have won six in a row. While all the wins have been good, last Thursday's 57-49 road win at Hermantown may have been the most impressive. "Quinn Danielson had just a fantastic game for us. We would not have pulled that win off without her on the...
A slow first half doomed the Cloquet boys basketball team last Thursday in a 96-80 road loss to Hermantown. The Lumberjacks struggled to keep pace and fell behind by 16 at the break, then rallied, only to have the rally fall short with another run at the end of the game by the Hawks. "In the first half they turned us over with their pressure and we didn't handle it well," said Cloquet coach Steve Battaglia. "We also didn't play very good defense in the half court and allowed them to penetrate an...
“Good special teams play” is a phrase that hasn’t been attached to the Minnesota Wilderness very much this season. The club entered its game Saturday vs. the Minnesota Magicians in the bottom 10 of the NAHL’s power-play and penalty kill statistics. But things were different Saturday night. The Wilderness went two for three with the man advantage and killed all three power-play opportunities for the Magicians to eke out a 5-4 win and sweep a two-game, home-and-home series against their in-state rivals. Bobby Metz’s goal 7:11 into the third wit...
Until last Thursday, the last time the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team played at home was Dec. 14. During that span the Lumberjacks went 0-5-1. When they finally got a chance to play in the friendly confines of Northwood's Credit Union Arena, they didn't disappoint the hometown crowd with a 3-2 win over Brainerd. "It felt like it has been forever since we played at home," said CEC coach Shea Walters. "We have had a tough stretch on the road so it felt really good to get back in our barn in...
A tenacious defense and a key first-half run were just enough to give the Cloquet girls basketball team a narrow 66-61 victory over Esko in Cloquet last Thursday night. "We pride ourselves on playing a tough man-to-man," said Cloquet coach Heather Young. "We work hard on positioning but need to improve on constant communication. To cause Esko to turn it over 20 times along with the ability to get 11 steals is a nice stat to see. Esko is a well-coached team. They shoot the ball well, transition a...
Former Lumberjacks and UMD star Karson Kuhlman faced a bad-news, good-news scenario on Sunday and Monday of this week. On Sunday, Kuhlman found out he was being put on waivers by the Boston Bruins. On Monday, he found out he was picked up by the Seattle Kraken. "I loved Boston, the fans and my teammates," said Kuhlman, an Esko grad. "I am excited about the chance to play in Seattle and to try and build something special there." Kuhlman is currently in the second year of a two-year contract and...
Nordic skiers from six schools descended on Cloquet for a rare evening ski meet Tuesday, held on the lighted trail loop at Pine Valley. While skiers sped off into the darkness like clockwork every 30 seconds for nearly three hours - spanning boys and girls varsity, junior varsity and junior high races - volunteers kept things ticking. Inside the chalet they served warm food, organized racing bibs and kept the wax room running. Outside, even more volunteers timed the race from start to finish,...
The Cloquet boys basketball team capped off the Wood City Classic last Wednesday by winning the championship game 78-72 over a feisty Pine City squad at Cloquet Middle School gymnasium. “The tournament went well,” said Cloquet coach Steve Battaglia. “We had youth medal nights with the girls on Tuesday and the boys on Wednesday, so the evening sessions were well attended. For the coaches and players, it’s really nice to get some games in without having to leave town.” Against Pine City the Lumbe...
The girls and boys Lumberjacks hockey teams skated with younger area hockey players during the "Skate with the Jacks" event Sunday afternoon at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet. Ann Dunaiski estimated about 60 players attended, along with 75 youngsters, with free pizza and drinks provided for all. It was the first Skate with the Jacks gathering since the start of the pandemic. Kids could also win everything from tickets to see the Lumberjacks or the Wilderness, hockey apparel, water...
Mesabi East used a furious second-half comeback to defeat the Lumberjacks 51-49 in the opening round of the Wood City Classic girls basketball tournament Tuesday night. The Lumberjacks had a strong first half as they built a 29-17 lead behind 14 first-half points by Maddie Young. "I thought Maddie had a good first half and played well for us," Cloquet coach Heather Young said. "In the second half she started to try and do perhaps too much and altered her shot. As a team, we need to learn...
The Wood City Classic boys basketball tournament returned to Cloquet Middle School Tuesday afternoon with Cloquet and Pine City capturing first-round wins. The Dragons opened the tournament with a 99-56 win over Proctor, followed by the Lumberjacks, who took a 67-30 victory over Cromwell-Wright. The 'Jacks broke open a 7-7 game early in the first half and eventually made two strong runs that added up to a 35-15 halftime lead. "We just couldn't match up with them athletically," said Cardinals...
