  • Caucus is alive and well for county's party faithful

    Jana Peterson|Feb 28, 2020

Tuesday's Republican and Democratic-Farmer-Labor party caucus meetings were substantially more subdued than the last time presidential candidates were on the ballot. Local party leaders on both sides agree: that's mostly because Minnesota is now holding a primary election for president, rather than using local caucuses to choose a candidate. "I've had people ask me why we're even having precinct caucuses," said Carlton County DFL chairperson Patty Murto, as she waited for results to come in...

The double whammy of fewer students and state and federal mandates that aren’t fully funded has the Barnum School Board looking at major cuts to keep the budget in the black. The issues aren’t new, nor are they unique to the Barnum school district. However, after five years of deficit spending, the school board now needs to make $750,000 in cuts or risk going into statutory operating debt. A large crowd of concerned residents attended the working meeting of the Barnum school board Feb. 4. It wasn’t so much a presentation from staff to audie...

Further complicating the situation, the portion of the message saying “this is a test” was cut off. Communities in several counties received the message. Steve Korby|Feb 7, 2020

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the hockey rink at Cloquet's Athletic Park on 14th Street was a hopping spot. Ice skates weren't always required. Teams were mostly from Cloquet but there were some from Brookston, Grand Lake and other nearby communities. The Cloquet Broomball League was unique in that...

    Anne Dugan|Feb 7, 2020

Minnesota climatology records show that January was the cloudiest on record since recorded observations started in 1963. With the gloomy weather it can be hard to stay motivated. Luckily, our community has some options for you. The city of Wrenshall created and maintains a free outdoor ice rink located just behind the post office and bus garage. It is lit by lights hanging in the pine trees that stay on until around 9 p.m. There is a warming house and bench for folks to put on skates and rest....

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Feb 7, 2020

As I sit down to type this week's news, it's a balmy 40 degrees in Wright. Just think, one year ago, it was 30 to 40 below zero with a wind chill of minus 50 degrees. It was on Jan. 30, the coldest day of 2019, that our local restaurant, Minetties, caught fire and burned to the ground. What a difference a year makes. We are still hoping a café can open in Wright in the future. Congratulations to Julie Peterson, a board member at Moose Lake schools the past 29 years, for receiving the Board...
