Tuesday’s Cloquet City Council meeting marked the move of the “public comment” portion to the beginning — rather than the end — of the meeting. The council changed the process to allow public input on issues before voting, rather than after. The city installed a digital timer to keep comments under 3 minutes, and some rules about the mayor’s authority to limit comments, if necessary, were read. The new system did not get a trial, though, as no citizens were present to make comments at the meeting. The city got good news on the search for...

News that the ice plant in “The Barn” — the city’s oldest hockey arena — had leaked as much as 5,000 pounds of R-22 refrigerant came as a shock to Cloquet city officials earlier this month. So did the price tag. At $10 a pound, the cost to replace 5,000 pounds of R-22 is $50,000. Councilors balked at paying that kind of bill without more information at their Oct. 1 meeting, and requested a special meeting with area hockey officials to find out more about the cooling system itself, use of the ri...
An era came to a close last month when Cloquet softball coach Ron Tondryk handed his resignation letter to activities director Paul Riess, just a few months after the Lumberjacks took third place at the Minnesota State High School softball tournament. It was not only the end of Tondryk's decade-long tenure as head coach for Cloquet, but also the end of a 25-year coaching relationship between Tondryk and assistant coach Kerry Rodd. "It was time," said Tondryk last week. "We both have... Full story

The Barnum volleyball team picked up an impressive win last Thursday when they downed Cromwell-Wright 3-2 in a thrilling five-set match in Barnum. The Bombers took the first set of the match by a 25-17 score, but the Cards bounced back to win the next two sets 26-24 and 25-13 before Barnum responded in kind by... Full story
The consensus reached at a joint meeting Monday of the full Carlton and Wrenshall school boards is that members will likely seek a referendum in August of next year on facilities improvements at two schools. But that fact, as opposed to having a vote in February, does not mean board members are easing up on what has been a whirlwind of meetings this late summer and fall trying to work out possible conditions for a consolidation. “Let’s keep the momentum going,” Wrenshall board member Janaki Fisher-Merritt said. While the Wrenshall board is al... Full story

On a cool Friday night in Willow River, Esko pulled off a 20-18 upset to end the Rebels' four-game winning streak. Despite four turnovers on the night, the Eskomos took advantage of an interception and an 87-yard return for a touchdown by Preston Lowe which broke a 12-12 tie. With a two-point conversion - also by Lowe - the Eskomos were able to hold off a late push by the Rebels in picking up the road victory. "We hung in there," head coach Scott Arntson said. "Offensively we didn't execute like...
I was heading back down the Gunflint Trail from a full day of guiding on Lake Saganaga, or Big Sag as the locals refer to it. I had a young couple from the Cities who were excited about the cooler of fresh walleyes, bass, and lake trout collected from the rootbeer-stained water of Sag. But they both hoped to end their day laying eyes on their first moose. Somedays I would get lucky and a cow or calf would linger in the moose pond adjacent to the guides' landing on the Sag corridor. Always a...

The price tag is in on upgraded facilities for a consolidated Carlton and Wrenshall school district: $47.3 million. That was the estimate presented to district superintendent and school board members during a meeting Monday in Wrenshall. The firm ARI is working with the districts on the idea of a two-site option for consolidation - an elementary at Carlton's South Terrace school and a high school in Wrenshall. Both current campuses would need significant upgrades under the two-site plan. But...
Football Cloquet-50 Hibbing-14 At halftime the Cloquet Lumberjacks led Hibbing by a 20-14 score but seemed to be struggling against the over-matched Bluejackets. Enter Marshall Hayes, a sophomore running back, who seemed to spark the ’Jacks offense in the second half. While star running back Cole Ketola handled most of the first-half running chores and churned up big yardage, it was Hayes who handled the bulk of the carries on the first drive of the second half that started a scoring o...
