  • Kings of the Court: Carlton's improbable run 60 years ago

    Mike Creger|Jul 26, 2019

When the Carlton basketball team came home from Hibbing in March of 1959, players decided to get a bite to eat at a diner in Cloquet. They were in a celebratory mood, after all. Against all odds, the Bulldogs had gone to the regionals and won it, earning them a spot in what then was the most-coveted high school sports achievement in Minnesota - a spot in the state basketball tournament. But the road to that triumph included tiny Carlton knocking Cloquet out of the districts a week earlier. The...

  • County wants to appoint auditor/treasurer

    Dan Reed|Jul 26, 2019

With little fanfare, the commissioners approved unanimously to move to appoint a new auditor/treasurer. Recent legislation gives the county board the power to fill the position by appointment; the office of auditor/treasurer has been an elected position since the formation of Carlton County. The retirement of longtime auditor/treasurer Paul Gassert has given the board the opportunity to consider this move to appoint the position. The county must follow a specific procedure to make the change from an elected to an appointed position. A hearing...

  • Opinions fly on how to pay for county garage

    Dan Reed|Jul 12, 2019

About a dozen residents attended the hearing on funding a new Carlton County transportation garage in Barnum on Tuesday during the regular meeting of the Carlton County Board of Commissioners. Most people attending voiced concern that using a half-percent sales tax for funding the building would hinder road maintenance projects. In a PowerPoint presentation, county engineer JinYeene Neumann said space is limited at the aging facility, which was built in 1975 and added onto in 1978. In the 1970s, dump trucks were 25-feet long and motor graders w...

  • Cromwell-wright news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jul 12, 2019

Last week we spent a lot of time with our son, as he took a week off before starting a new job. On Monday we took a North Shore Scenic Railroad trip up the North Shore past Congdon Park and back. We also enjoyed a cruise on the Vista Star, which took us around the Duluth Harbor. The excursion lasted an hour and 45 minutes and, as it was on a Tuesday, the cost was only $5. Yes, they have $5 Tuesdays, and it is a great experience for those who have never been or haven’t been on the lake for y...

The Food Farm provides fields for local producer Christian Dahm’s bees to forage. His bright, multicolored boxes are located on the northwest corner of our farm and offer a cheery sight for folks coming and going on County Road 1. On Sunday, Dahm was out checking on his col...

    Jana Peterson|Jul 5, 2019

Lara Wilkinson and the other members of the Cloquet Economic Development Authority are tired of seeing Cloquet residents drive up and down Interstate 35 to spend money at places like the Moose Lake Brewery, or at Bent Paddle in Duluth. Bring it here," more than a dozen community leaders raised empty purple plastic party cups in a toast to future business partners that could bring new life to Cloquet's historic business district. • The County Beat: Raiding sales tax funds isn't sustainable

    Dan Reed|Jun 28, 2019

More than four years ago, then county highway engineer Mike Tardy sold a half-percent sales tax levy to upgrade county roads (those identified by a number above 100). He said that extra revenue was needed for major repairs, sometimes a complete overhaul, of these roadways that had little chance of being fixed otherwise. Since the sales tax passed, the record of county road work has been amazing and has widespread support. I have heard the comment often: “We can see the results of the tax we are paying.” These projects come from a dedicated lis...
