    Pine Knot News Staff|Feb 8, 2019

Thomas Michael Bislow, 74, of Carlton passed away on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019 in his home. Considered by many as the beating heart of Mahtowa, Bislow and his TJ’s Country Corner store put the small city on the map with fabulous locally made potato sausages and brats — the store’s motto is “Our Wurst is Best” — and unique celebrations, such as the annual beard and moustache contest, the vintage snowmobile meet, the Rat Rod Rendezvous, twice-a-year “chicken swaps” and, of course, the bratwurst festival. There were other events happening more... Full story

On Tuesday, voters in Minnesota State Senate District 11 will head to the polls, just like they did for the primary election exactly two weeks ago, to vote for their favorite candidates for state senate. It's been a whirlwind since Jan. 4, the day that incoming Gov. Tim Walz announced longtime District 11 Senator Tony Lourey was his choice to lead the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Suddenly there was an open state senate seat, and only 32 days to fill it. The Jan. 22 primary whittled... Full story

    Dan Reed, Pine Knot News|Feb 1, 2019

The unexpected expense of a special primary and general election for the Minnesota Senate District 11 seat was an unpleasant surprise for more than one Carlton County official. “Why do the costs for a special primary and special election fall solely on the local counties and townships involved?” asked Carlton County Commissioner Gary Peterson at the Adjourned Session of the County Board Monday, Jan. 28. “The state of Minnesota should cover the costs.” Auditor/Treasurer Paul Gassert explained the makeup of the more than $50,000 in costs,...

The new Carlton School Board elected officers with little tension during its first meeting Jan. 10, but ended up deadlocked on proposed wages for the board itself, voting three times on different proposals and ending each time 3-3. In the end, they passed a temporary measure to keep the wages where they were - $37.50 per meeting plus $1,000 per year - and moved the discussion to Monday's Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting. • Wright-Cromwell News

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jan 11, 2019

The new year has brought a severe water problem at our home. First of all, the power went out for several hours in the cold weather on Jan. 2, so I think our waterlines and/or the pump froze. As I write this, we have been without water for several days in the house. I’m hoping that by the time you read this, it is fixed, but we have had to be pretty creative in how we use the bathroom, wash dishes, or clean ourselves up, etc. It sure helps that we have a lot of snow on the ground, as it came i...

  • LETTERS to the editor

    Jan 11, 2019

Stu Lourey will bring knowledge and energy to Minn. Senate To the editor: Recently, I’ve been reminded of the saying that “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness,” or, it’s better to take action than to complain. Many of us have been complaining a lot about the way the Republicans have worked to block many progressive initiatives. We now have a unique opportunity to take action at the polls. Because Sen. Tony Lourey was appointed to head Minnesota Human Services, his Senate seat is now open. It’s crucial we elect a great can...

Additionally, the accelerated timeline of the special election has also created challenges for everyone from the candidates themselves to political parties and county officials tasked with running the election. “These elections will be conducted in the same manner as we did last fall for the A...

"From Thanksgiving to Christmas we had only a couple inches of snow, so it was very dry," said Steve Gohde, observing program leader for the National Weather Service in Duluth. "We had started departing from normal - normal is 35.1 inches, and we've got 33.5 inches now - but we were pretty flatline until that injection...
