With schools in Minnesota closed for the holiday break, most athletic teams in the state and in the area will be busy focusing on winter holiday tournaments or select games over the break. Not every coach chooses to compete over break. "We used to play in a tournament over the [holidays] but we decided not to and let the kids get a break, focus on getting healthy and get set for the second half of the season," said Moose Lake-Willow River boys basketball head coach Wes Cummings. However, if you...
I stood swaying back and forth in the parking lot of PJ’s Little Store, half asleep on my feet, after a particularly long overnight shift. It was early December, and my brother Bruce was slated to pick me up. I wasn’t going to let a little sleep deprivation get in the way of our plans. We headed south past Moose Lake. Our mission: chuck the spear at a few pike. We parked the truck along a gravel road near the water’s edge. Frozen cattails, suspended in winter’s grip, welcomed our arrival...

Three generations of Proulx women have made their mark at local credit union It must be something that goes along with the XX-pair of chromosomes in the Proulx family. Now, nearly 32 years later, Brown is retiring after 15 years as CEO of the same credit union, now known as Northwoods Credit Union. She celebrated her retirement with a string of parties...
What better classroom could there be than the great outdoors? One of the main purposes of the Carlton County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is to teach people how to care for the natural environment. Throughout this past year, Carlton SWCD Forestry Technician Kelly Smith was instrumental in coordinating a series of "Walk in the Woods" events for local landowners to learn how to care for their forests. During the walks - sponsored by the Kettle River Woodland Council chapter of the...

I welcomed the early morning help from my oldest brother Bob in preparing my own shore lunch pack. It was my first day as a fishing guide, and I had enough to worry about. A guide’s shore lunch pack is as individual as each guide. Some are heavy packers, prepared to cook a seven-course meal to impress guests. The rest are light packers, relying on their fishing skills to make the day memorable. I had no interest in becoming a shore lunch chef — I would be a light packer, come hell or high wat... The Carlton County Board of Commissioners voted Nov. 13 to sell the Shaw Library building to its longtime tenant, the Carlton County Historical Society, for exactly $1. And that is not much more than what the county paid for the building when it took possession of the historic property from the city of Cloquet. It was a decision months in the making, a debate that started when county officials decided they didn’t want to make the large investments required to renovate the former library and solicited proposals for the building — home to CCHS si...
This was the second time in my life that the police called about a friend close to me. This time it was Harold Haapoja, dying unexpectedly, and they were seeking relatives to contact. I searched for phone numbers or tried to think of a way to contact the relatives. I remember staring at the wall for quite a while. I could not cry but just let the sadness settle in. Harold came to me, alive as can be, and spoke to me in my thoughts, saying it would be OK. More than 20 years ago, Harold and I started to collaborate in plays and perform in...

Tuesday's General Election also brought change outside of Cloquet. Challenger Lauri Ketola won the County Attorney's race in a landslide - 11,488 votes to 3,347 votes - over incumbent Thom Pertler. Ketola has less time at the County Attorney's office than Pertler, but also offered a background in nonprofit leadership. She was also endorsed by a number of area law enforcement officials, including Carlton County Sheriff Kelly Lake, Moose Lake Police Chief Bryce Bogenholm and former Cloquet Police...
It was a fortuitous bus ride discussion nearly two years ago that led to a student-run peer group in Cloquet designed to keep kids safe from the stressful triggers of adolescence. "We want to do more" is what Anne Parish remembers students saying on the ride home from a suicide prevention training in Grand Rapids. She is a coordinator for REACH, the countywide mentoring program for teens begun in 2000. "Things have progressed," said Raven Sevilleja, a student at Cloquet High School and one of th...

One hundred years ago, while folks in northern Minnesota were just beginning to recover from the Oct. 12 fires and the Spanish influenza after both swept through the area, news of a war-ending armistice reached Minneapolis just before 2 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. As described by author Curt Brown in his “Minnesota 1918” book, sirens went off, “lights blinked on in homes, and people poured into the streets.” Major hostilities of WWI were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the armistice with Germany... Welcome to the Pine Knot News Faith and Religion page. The point of it (as I understand it) is to offer reasonable and coherent access to the faith God brought to life, and to be in conversation about how faith can be real and matter in today’s world. I imagine the faith leaders who submit their prayerfully shaped meditations will bring their own faith traditions and perspectives to the ideas we will share here each time. Many of us will come with these thoughts rooted in the way Jesus brought faith to life, but I hope other faithful t...
