    Dwight Cadwell|Nov 3, 2023

When they met for the season opener, Barnum's first victory over Moose Lake/Willow River came only after two overtimes. This week, the neighboring football teams will play again, with the Section 7AA title and a trip to State on the line. The Bombers remain undefeated after overwhelming the Aitkin Gobblers, 41-0, in one section semifinal at Barnum Saturday, while the Rebels topped Mesabi East, 28-14, in Willow River Saturday to advance to the section championship contest Thursday night in Esko....

Esko, the No. 2 seed in the south, opened the first round with an easy 3-0 win over Hinckley-Finlayson. "That match went about how we thought it would," said Esko coach Pete Stasiuk. Esko added another win to its resume Friday, Oct. 27 by knocking off Pine City,...

    Jana Peterson|Nov 3, 2023

Jack Riley had the moment he'd been waiting for last week, winning the Section 7A cross country meet Thursday, Oct. 26, and setting a personal record in the process. "It felt pretty good," the Wrenshall senior said in a phone interview Monday. "I've kind of been looking forward to that kind of thing since pretty early in my career, hoping to get there. It was pretty special." It was also redemption after a rough season last year. He made it to State then - this year makes three in a row - but...

  • They walk to remember loved ones

    Jana Peterson|Oct 20, 2023

Saturday was the first time Isabelle and Josh Hamsmith participated in the Suicide Awareness Memorial Walk, but it won't be the last, said Isabelle. She and her father carried a sign to remember her mother, Autumn Rae Beck, who died by suicide in 2017. "I think just making the sign last night was kind of fun," said Josh. "It helped." They were with people who understood Saturday, because most of the nearly 200 attendees have been touched by suicide. They remembered friends, coworkers, children,...

Joshua Lee Bergan, 30, was reported missing and last seen walking toward Folz Boulevard. • Barnum Board candidates make their pitch

    Brady Slater|Oct 20, 2023

It's a sparse election season in Carlton County, where the only electable seats belong to a pair of school boards seeking to fill terms vacated by previously elected officials. In Barnum, board appointee Patrick Poirier and challenger Tony Newman will vie to fill the remaining year left on a seat that's up for election again in 2024. Election day is Nov. 7, with early voting already started. The Pine Knot News asked the candidates to respond to our election questionnaire, and both Poirier and...

  • Local runners dominate at Polar League meet

    Jana Peterson|Oct 20, 2023

Great cross country runners are built over time. While genetics probably helps, it's the miles and miles of running that can really make the difference. Raptors runner Jack Riley is proof. After ramping up his training this summer and fall, the Wrenshall senior raced to a decisive win in Thursday's Polar League conference championship meet. Riley finished the 5K race on Pincushion Mountain in 16 miutes, 42.20 seconds, just over 19 seconds ahead of second. The front pack of four or five runners s...

  • Wrenshall refuses ambulance contribution

    Brady Slater|Oct 13, 2023

In a letter last month to the neighboring city of Carlton, the city of Wrenshall declined to support the Carlton ambulance service as it moves toward adding two full-time positions to a historically volunteer staff. “After much thought and deliberation, we have come to the conclusion that it would not be fiscally responsible for us to burden our residents with a levy increase of 10 percent to cover your requested contribution of $9,537.13,” said the letter, signed by Wrenshall Mayor Gary Butala. To date, Wrenshall is the only jurisdiction in...

  • Letter to the editor: Firefighters did a great job

    Oct 13, 2023

On Sept. 4, Labor Day, my 160-acre Nemadji Creek tree farm was in the direct path of the Carlton County Road 11 wildfire. Because of the quick and effective response, the damage to my woodlands was minimal and none of my pine and spruce plantations were burned. Over the subsequent days, I was in close contact with county law enforcement, and volunteer and professional firefighters from the local to the state level. At times there were up to 67 pairs of boots on the ground or in the air. I want to express my sincere thanks to those on the scene...

  • An ode to fall (with photos)

    Oct 13, 2023

A poem by Patrick Stevens September Here lies the harvest fast piled rough with all we can stuff our chipmunk cheeks puffed and bulging or squirrels or ants or bees with their combs. I relish the ripeness of September just after the rot sets in; when last apples drop, deer come at night to feast on our fallen bounty; leaf edges brown here, then there, the maples, sweet and red, drip to the ground drowned in morning dew. In evening I see a thousand varied birds fowl big, fowl small flocking...

  • Sunnyside nursing home to close

    Jana Peterson|Oct 6, 2023

After nearly six decades of caring for the community's elderly and infirm, Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet is closing. Sunnyside and Community Memorial Hospital officials said the process will begin immediately and will be complete by the end of the year. Thirty-four residents will have to find new places to live, and close to 30 staff will lose their jobs. It was a difficult decision, said Community Memorial Hospital CEO Rick Breuer. But difficulty staffing the facility - which always...

  • An epic season is brewing in Barnum

    Brady Slater|Oct 6, 2023

When Jim Charboneau decided to chronicle the Barnum football season for the Moose Lake Star-Gazette, the proud grandfather to the team's quarterback figured somebody needed to pick up the bullhorn, so it might as well be him. "Barnum usually hasn't gotten much ink locally," Jim said. "I decided I would write articles for the football team." The grandson, Hayden Charboneau, plays quarterback and is one of 10 seniors on the team. "There's all kinds of things to brag about with him," Jim said....

  • Carlton happenings

    Leola Rodd|Oct 6, 2023

On Oct. 12, 1918 — 105 years ago — tragedy struck parts of Minnesota that included the communities of Kettle River, Moose Lake and Cloquet, areas of Duluth, and many smaller towns in the area. This was a devastating event for many families and businesses. I did not realize how close my family history was to the fire in Kettle River. My mother’s mother, Lucina Winquist, was living in Kettle River with her husband, Charles Winquist, and four children. They managed to escape to Moose Lake and survi...

  • Letter to the editor: Government shutdown hits hard

    Sep 29, 2023

The U.S. is on the brink of a government shutdown due to a handful of right wing extremists who are holding the country hostage. These extremists, all Republicans and ironically known as the Freedom Caucus, claim they will not vote to approve the 2024 federal budget due to their opposition to the growing federal debt. Really? According to the Associated Press, a shutdown would furlough millions of federal employees, leave active military without pay, disrupt air travel and cut off vital safety net services. It would definitely affect some of...

Jim and Cassie Barry have owned and operated the golf course since 2005, and listed the golf course for sale three years ago. Tom Kraemer Inc. of Moose Lake contacted them a day after it went on the market. TKI, formerly StorMor, is presently located just off Minnesota Highway 27 and Old Highway 61. The company offers large, portable storage...

  • Dollar store stakes a claim in Barnum

    Brady Slater|Sep 29, 2023

Sometime in winter 2024, the city of Barnum will be less of a food and retail desert than it is. Dollar General is moving onto Main Street, with construction already begun on a store which figures to include staples such as milk. While not a grocery store, Dollar General will fill a longtime void in a community that sees its residents travel to Moose Lake, Cloquet and beyond for merchandise such as cleaning supplies, health and beauty products, stationery, seasonal decorations, and some snacks...
