  • An ending that still stings

    Steve Korby|Aug 25, 2023

They still haven't accepted their Olympic silver medals. The 1972 U.S. men's basketball team lost to the Russians by a point in the championship game in what was a highly controversial and contested last minute of play. Up to that point, the United States, in the days of all-college rosters, had never lost an Olympic basketball game. Team captain Kenny Davis included language in his will preventing his children from ever accepting the silver medal. The team members have met several times since t...

    Leola Rodd|Aug 4, 2023

The Carlton Daze celebration was a wonderful event - even Mother Nature was on her best behavior. Thank you to the Carlton Area Chamber, local businesses and volunteers for making the celebration a success. The 29th annual 5K had great weather for the 130 walkers and runners participating in the race. I spent Saturday afternoon walking through the car show, visiting with friends and having lunch at one of the many food trucks. (This is a time when the diet goes out the window.) Sunday's parade...

  • Agates are the lure in moose lake

    Mike Creger|Jul 21, 2023

The most interesting portion of the Agate Stampede in Moose Lake Saturday was all the pregame talk along Elm Street about strategy. Some vow to wait back and snatch the loot others miss after the two dump trucks unload their haul of rocks along the two, long, people-packed, blocks of the downtown street. Some get ready to dash right in, water bottle in hand to better discern the precious rocks from the ordinary. There are all levels of bucket sophistication (some with built-in sifters) and...
