Created by Pine City's LeRoy Samuelson in 2010, the four-day, four-person Senior Scramble recently completed play at five golf courses in the region. While Samuelson passed away a few years ago, his sons, Loren and Brad, have continued organizing the September event. This year, 22 teams, with many from Carlton County, cleared their golf schedules to play. Courses played included The Retreat (Floodwood), Pine City, Moose Lake, Rugged Spruce (Mahtowa), and Pine Hill (Carlton) golf clubs....

With the help of wetter and colder weather, the County Road 11 fire in Barnum Township was declared 100-percent contained on Tuesday, eight days after smoke was observed in the area on Labor Day. On Wednesday, command of the fire was handed off to local firefighters to monitor hot spots, mostly in areas of shallow peat among the 82 acres of mostly swampland that burned. The fire spread quickly after a hot and windy Labor Day weekend but was mostly contained a day after the fire was reported. It...
The Cloquet volleyball team raced to a fast start this season, a trend that continued with a sweep of Moose Lake/Willow River on Tuesday at Moose Lake Area School. Cloquet won the first set 25-15, and the second set 25-16. Each of those sets were tight battles in the early going, but the Lumberjacks took control and distanced themselves from ML/WR in both games, thanks to timely kills from Ava Carlson, who finished with 22 kills on the night. The Rebels were unwilling to quit in an extended...

The ghosts of the "Boys of Summer" still float around 14th Street, the skateboard rink, and Athletic Park in Cloquet. Town Baseball celebrated 100 years of championships in the state of Minnesota over the recent Labor Day weekend. Cloquet has records of city organized baseball definitely originating before that date, with documented team photos dating back to the 1890s and early 1900s. But they are no more. The Cloquet Foresters disbanded before 1980. They were the last Cloquet post-high-school...

You could say that parts of Carlton County lucked out this past Labor Day weekend. Things could have been much worse. Days after a swath across northern Minnesota, including all of the county, was designated in the "extreme drought" category, we were hit with record high temperatures over the holiday weekend. Drought conditions lingering into the fall are not common in the region. Infamously, the region also received what would have been declared an "extreme" level of dryness in the fall of...
Before last session even began, we knew our nursing homes were overwhelmed with a massive crisis: 15 percent of nursing homes statewide had exhausted their financial reserves, and 10 percent were considering closure. Outside of the Twin Cities area, those numbers were much worse: 17 percent of the homes had no financial reserve and 12 percent were considering closure. With about 350 nursing homes in the state, that put 60 nursing homes without reserves, and 41 considering closure. This crisis was created from the combination of raging...
The Lahaina destruction on the Hawaiian island of Maui definitely is a catastrophe. The loss of lives, livelihoods, homes, and irreplaceable ancient relics from early inhabitants of the islands is a tragedy, no question about it. Yet, our area of northern Minnesota has its own fire tragedy that impacts our lives even after 105 years have passed. Up to this day, it is the largest natural disaster in Minnesota history, with some 1,500 square miles destroyed by fire in a region encompassing 8,400...
Local football fans got a treat Friday when Barnum defeated Moose Lake/Willow River for the first time since 1998. It wasn't easy, but the Barnum defense got it done during a second overtime, stopping the Rebels at the 5-yard line to pull out a 28-22 victory. The brown jug finally made its way back to Barnum. "It was a lot of fun and a good game between two good teams," said Barnum coach Rob Minkkinen. "I was proud of how resilient our team was all game long. There were a few times where they...

Local high school cross country runners got a chance to shake off the rust last Thursday with the annual Chub Lake meet, which is all about having fun and getting a chance to run. "This is not your typical meet," said meet organizer Jerimy Hallsten of Esko. "I inherited the meet from Jerry Zimney, Mike Bushey and Tim Lindquist and I am sure they inherited running the meet from others before them, but regardless, it is a relaxed event for everyone." Each coach times their own runners and there is...

With the passing of "Doc Puumala" last weekend, Cloquet lost its last country doctor, a man who made house calls and didn't worry how long an appointment lasted. Ricard Reino Puumala died Saturday, Aug. 19, at the age of 88. At one time, he and his wife, Barbara, worked at the family clinic with both of his parents, Reino and Marie Bepko Puumala. His daughter, Dr. Vicky Heren, said Ricard (and both his parents) were general practice physicians. They did it all: pinning hips, removing...
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make Ma & Pa Kettle Days happen again this year. Without you, it would not have been able to work. I am sure that those who complained about some events they wanted to see will be at the next meeting to volunteer to make it happen next year. If you want an event, arrange for all that is needed to make it happen. Do not expect old people to do the work you don’t want to do. Quilting at Holy Trinity resumes at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6. Everyone is invited to join us. Donations of new cotton fabric, t...
They still haven't accepted their Olympic silver medals. The 1972 U.S. men's basketball team lost to the Russians by a point in the championship game in what was a highly controversial and contested last minute of play. Up to that point, the United States, in the days of all-college rosters, had never lost an Olympic basketball game. Team captain Kenny Davis included language in his will preventing his children from ever accepting the silver medal. The team members have met several times since t...
