The Mangan family of Barnum is the subject of a crowdfunding campaign following a house fire July 8 that destroyed their home. When she turned around flames had engulfed the door, so she pre...

Paul Ward turned 90 this summer, and the story of how he landed the area's most well-known agate has changed. But only a little. Shortly after the 108-pound agate began being celebrated in Moose Lake during the early 1980s, the story went that Ward was looking for agates in a local pit when he unearthed the monster he first thought was a root. But last month, during a visit to his Sandstone, Minnesota residence by the Pine Knot, Ward recalled a different origin. He was clearing land and...

It was the Cloquet Fourth of July redemption tour, after being diminished by the pandemic, then kicked in the knees by Mother Nature last year. People of all ages lined Cloquet Avenue for the annual July Fourth parade, several rows deep in places, kids with bags and buckets ready to be filled with...

After last year’s miserable weather, Fourth of July organizers in Cloquet have been busy refreshing the weather app on their phones. On Tuesday night — a week before the big day — the iPhone weather app predicted perfect Minnesota summer weather: partly sunny, temperatures in the upper 70s. The next morning the same weather app showed a 50-percent chance of rain on July 4. Nine hours later the forecast was back to no rain and a high of 81 degrees. Other than the weather, all the various event...

The third annual Cloquet Wood City Classic girls softball tournament was on a rainy weekend last week at Braun Park in Cloquet. There were 34 teams participating in three age divisions and, as usual, the tournament was another impressive display of teamwork by all. "We had to battle rain and the elements, but we got all the games in, and there were no complaints and, most importantly,...

Crews are putting in 2,000 hours each week on average. The wells for the ground-source heating and cooling pumping system are all drilled and the piping into the building is done, Coughlin said. The insulation and the rubber roof is installed, with most areas covered with wash rock to hold the rubber in place. Overall, the highest-cost ite...
I sure learned a lot at the two town hall meetings I held in Moose Lake and Scanlon earlier this month. The big issues, such as abortion rights, gun restrictions and taxes were not the top priority for most people. No, much of the discussion revolved around trains, lunch, and jails. (There were a few conspiracy theories bantered about, but that was mostly just for fun.) That passenger train line we are about to build from Minneapolis to Duluth sure drew the ire of conservatives and liberals both...

More than 40 local athletes participated in the Minnesota Boys and Girls State Track meet last weekend at St. Michael-Albertville. A number of those athletes had top showings and made it to the finals. Class AA boys Miles Fischer had a big day for Cloquet by finishing in third place in the 1,600 meter run. The senior followed that up with a seventh place finish in the 3,200. He ran 4:18.43 in the 1600 and 9:39.20 in the 3,200. "Miles Fischer almost got the 1600 record from 1985 of John Wodny,"...
When asked what her three seniors have meant to her and their community's softball squad over the years, an emotional Moose Lake/Willow River head coach Kelley Goeb needed a moment. Rightfully so, as the momentum that Sarah Christy, Alexis Hoffmann and Hannah Roach have brought to the Rebels' program has sent them soaring into the record books. In fact, the trio bookended their prep careers in familiar territory - with a win - as Christy and Hoffmann split duty in the pitcher's circle, spinning...

As the defending Section 7A champions, the Moose Lake/Willow River girls softball team had a target on its back the entire season. The Rebels handled the pressure of the compacted season and last week did the same by going undefeated in the sectional tournament to make the state tournament for the second time in a row. "We told the girls we needed to be ready for that, because every team we played was going to give us their best game," said ML/WR coach Kelly Goeb. "We were ready for that. We...

I hope some of you can join us at the “town hall” meetings we’re holding around Carlton County next week. The first is Tuesday, June 6 at the Moose Lake Brewing conference room, and the other is Thursday, June 8 at the Scanlon Community Center. Both start at 7 p.m., and everyone is invited. I really do mean everyone. As these types of meetings have become popular with elected officials, they’ve become more “fixed,” with only certain viewpoints allowed. Even worse, some town halls allow the m...
Moose Lake/Willow River returns to section final When the Section 7A softball tournament opened play Tuesday at the Grand Rapids Sports Complex, there were only two unbeaten teams remaining: the Rebels and the Raptors.
