  • Sudden 70s strike snowpack, leading to flooding worries

    Mike Creger|Apr 14, 2023

One could easily mistake a northeastern Minnesota meteorologist for a sadist these days. Just two days after the messy April 4-5 snowstorm, followed by some slight signs of an actual spring, the National Weather Service in Duluth issued a report on the likely flooding that will occur in the region. It seems the winter of 2022-23 just won't relinquish its hold on the public conversation during a non-existent spring that had any children on an outdoor Easter egg hunt tromping over snow deeper...

Jody and Fast Eddie Westerberg of King Creek Hobby Farm, located on M T Nelson Road between Mahtowa and Barnum, don't know what started the fire. By the time they got to the barn, it was burning too fiercely to enter. They were able to save seven of their miniature silky fainting goats in a pen next to the barn. A total of 16 goats and two rabbits died inside the...

  • Newspapers play important role in ancestry research

    Francy Chammings|Apr 14, 2023

Those enticing ads depicting people immigrating to a better life in the USA sponsored by Ancestry.com have succeeded in convincing millions of people to submit DNA samples as a means of finding their roots. We search for stories of the past, details about where we came from, health histories and more. In all of this, we hope to learn how our ancestors survived to pass their genes on to us, but we need hard facts to establish the basis of our stories. The New York Library website says,...

  • Talent needs to cover inexperience in Esko

    Kerry Rodd|Apr 14, 2023

Following a 17-7 season last year, the Esko softball team will need to overcome the loss of five starters, including two pitchers, if they are to contend for a section title. Coach Jeff "Huff" Emanuel is optimistic - he just has to puzzle out where players fit best. "We did lose a lot, but I think we have some very athletic and talented players who can take those positions," Emanuel said. There is an old baseball adage that a team needs to be strong up the middle, which means the catcher,...

    Apr 14, 2023

This year’s population estimate of 3,290 moose marks a decade of Minnesota’s moose population remaining relatively stable, according to the results of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ 2023 aerial population survey. Although the estimate dropped from 2022’s estimate of 4,700, the change continues to reflect the population stability observed in previous years. Brady Slater|Apr 14, 2023

Not every poem Patrick Stevens writes will see the light of day. Some are crafted simply to get it all out. "I'm venting a lot of anger in my poetry at this point about snow," Stevens said last week, before the warming thaw. "It's nothing I'm going to publish ever. It's more about getting it out on paper." In December, the 75-year-old Stevens, with the help of some old Cloquet High School classmates, published his first book of poetry. Titled "Panning Gold," it features 40 poems across 146...

In spite of those efforts, track remains an indoor sport for now. On Saturday, April 1, eight different Polar League teams traveled to Superior for the inaugural meet of the season, giving track and field athletes a taste of what's to come. Carlton County runners, jumpers...

    Mike Cregar|Mar 17, 2023

What's with all the snow? It's a question everyone is asking after another weekend of digging out and another 6-inches-or-more burst forecasted as this issue of the Pine Knot went to press. We are above average is all we can tell you right now, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Weather Service data. There are variable snowfall amounts in the area, recorded since the first light snowfall way back in October. Officially, between 64 and 72 inches of snow has...

The Wrenshall school board agreed to slightly more than $312,000 in budget cuts during a special meeting Tuesday — the biggest slice of three rounds of cuts to date, totaling $383,000. The board reiterated during its committee of the whole meeting a day later on Wednesday that it was on its way to $500,000 in cuts, money to cover its current deficit and allow for a modest surplus in the district’s fund balance. “We still have a lot of information to gather,” board member Eric Ankrum said. • Snow keeps coming

    Jana Peterson|Mar 17, 2023

The Duluth Miller Hill Mall isn't the only place in the Northland with a missing roof thanks to the snow. When Cloquet's Nick Brown went to bed the night of March 6, his detached garage was intact. By the next morning, the roof had collapsed and the top window had shattered from the force, blowing glass shards at least 20 feet out onto the driveway. Brown hadn't heard a thing. "My room is in the corner, so about 8 feet away, and my boy's room is in the back, and the neighbors didn't hear it eith...
