Not every poem Patrick Stevens writes will see the light of day. Some are crafted simply to get it all out. "I'm venting a lot of anger in my poetry at this point about snow," Stevens said last week, before the warming thaw. "It's nothing I'm going to publish ever. It's more about getting it out on paper." In December, the 75-year-old Stevens, with the help of some old Cloquet High School classmates, published his first book of poetry. Titled "Panning Gold," it features 40 poems across 146...

Last weekend saw some heroic work done on outdoor track facilities, as Pete Hughes cleared much of the Cloquet track, while Esko utilized custodians, coaches and volunteers to clear at least three or four lanes to train on. In spite of those efforts, track remains an indoor sport for now. On Saturday, April 1, eight different Polar League teams traveled to Superior for the inaugural meet of the season, giving track and field athletes a taste of what's to come. Carlton County runners, jumpers...

The supply center is currently operating in West Duluth in a warehouse only one-third the size of the proposed construction project. Twenty to 25 full-time jobs will be moved from West Duluth to the new facility. The...

Moose Lake Fire District chief Steve Trenhaile presented the awards to each of the recipients. Trenhaile has spearheaded the EMS and fire department training in Moose Lake. Erik Bergstedt was honored as "Person of the Year" for EMS. Bergstedt is an emergency department nurse...
By summer, Sam Coil will have retired his throwing shoes and his track and field silks, trading them for a professional accounting job in Minneapolis. Until then, the 24-year-old Sturgeon Lake native and University of Wisconsin thrower will focus on adding to his championship career. "I like to set high expectations for myself, though nothing too unreasonable," Coil told the newspaper this week. In February, Coil won gold in the weight throw at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio....

What's with all the snow? It's a question everyone is asking after another weekend of digging out and another 6-inches-or-more burst forecasted as this issue of the Pine Knot went to press. We are above average is all we can tell you right now, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Weather Service data. There are variable snowfall amounts in the area, recorded since the first light snowfall way back in October. Officially, between 64 and 72 inches of snow has...
The Wrenshall school board agreed to slightly more than $312,000 in budget cuts during a special meeting Tuesday — the biggest slice of three rounds of cuts to date, totaling $383,000. The board reiterated during its committee of the whole meeting a day later on Wednesday that it was on its way to $500,000 in cuts, money to cover its current deficit and allow for a modest surplus in the district’s fund balance. “We still have a lot of information to gather,” board member Eric Ankrum said. The final figure for cuts has been a moving target,...
The Duluth Miller Hill Mall isn't the only place in the Northland with a missing roof thanks to the snow. When Cloquet's Nick Brown went to bed the night of March 6, his detached garage was intact. By the next morning, the roof had collapsed and the top window had shattered from the force, blowing glass shards at least 20 feet out onto the driveway. Brown hadn't heard a thing. "My room is in the corner, so about 8 feet away, and my boy's room is in the back, and the neighbors didn't hear it eith...
The Eskomos are the lone local team remaining in the Section 7AA boys basketball tournament after Saturday's quarterfinal round of play. Esko picked up an impressive and easy win over Aitkin, while Moose Lake/Willow River dropped a hard-fought tight decision to Rock Ridge. Esko opened the quarterfinal round by easily dispatching the Gobblers 78-33 in a game they led 49-15 at halftime. "I thought we did a good job on defense," said Esko coach Derek Anderson. "We executed our game plan very well....
For the second straight year and third time in the last five seasons, Mountain Iron-Buhl ended the Cromwell-Wright girls basketball team's hopes of advancing to the Minnesota Class A State tournament. At the final buzzer of Friday night's Section 7A final, the scoreboard read 67-38 in favor of the No. 1 ranked team in the state. When Barnum residents elected Dale Riihiluoma as mayor, running unopposed, in November, it was the culmination of decades of public service. It was also something his wife of 47 years, the late Diane Riihiluoma, didn't want to see happen. Diane passed away in November 2021 after three decades of battling cancer. She tended to favor blending in over standing out. "When Diane was still living she never wanted me to be mayor - it was too far out there," Dale said. "'You're not doing that,' she'd...
A new animal rescue group operating out of Carlton County has registered with the state as a nonprofit organization, and could begin fostering lost or stray dogs and cats in a matter of weeks. "We're 30 or 60 days away from taking our first official animals for rescue," said Erin Thompson, a board member of the new Carlton County Animal Rescue. Thompson met with 16 others Tuesday at the Cloquet Public Library as part of the group's monthly meetings. It has been gathering since October 2021, but...

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Esko girls basketball team dropped an 11-point decision to Duluth Marshall. On Saturday, the Eskomos played the Hilltoppers again, this time in the quarterfinal round of the Section 7AA tournament. Unfortunately, Marshall rode the hot hand of seventh-grader Chloe Johnson as the Hilltoppers eliminated Esko 62-52. "When we played them at the end of the regular season it was Regan Juenemann who killed us," said Esko coach Sue Northey. "This time it was Johnson, and...
Here I am again, watching the snow come down. As I talk to people about the weather, we are all wondering if it will end soon, and spring will finally come. Later this afternoon my snowblower will have to come out to clear the driveway, hopefully for the last time. Think spring. There’s plenty going on around Carlton these days, including: Lions Burger Night, 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 17, Carlton VFW. Book Sale, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17 at Community Memorial Hospital, 5...
Robotics, where teamwork extends beyond the team. They call it a robotics competition, but it's really a collaboration. It starts by entering events like last week's FIRST Robotics Regional Competition in Duluth. Team members had to work together to design a robot according to specifications outlined just a few short months ago, and it had to pass inspection before head-to-head scrambles in the arena began Thursday. For Cloquet's Ripsaw team, it also meant sharing a practice space in February...
Icy roads did not deter a dozen concerned Kettle River citizens from attending Monday's Carlton County Board meeting to ask why the grader was pulled from the Kettle River area county garage. "Six months ago the Kettle River people were assured the county garage would stay open," Bob Hattenberger said to county commissioners. "No one from the county let us know the garage was empty. Our first inkling the man and machine were gone was when we saw no tracks in the snow in front of the garage. We...
This legislative session has proven interesting. In most bienniums, the first year is appropriations, not policy. However, there have been a lot of policies introduced and passed. Our local legislators have voted against most of the legislation. They have held true to their political and personal values. There has been bipartisan support on less controversial proposals. In discussions with our local legislators, this writer has encouraged them to address housing, energy and education issues. I continue to share conversations I had with voters...
The girls high school section basketball tournaments opened Monday across Minnesota. In Section 7A the first-round games featured Wrenshall at Littlefork-Big Falls, while Fond du Lac was scheduled to play at Nashwauk-Keewatin. Nashwauk-Keewatin was a forfeit winner when Fond du Lac was unable to field a complete team. The Spartans moved to the second round on Thursday at Cromwell-Wright. Wrenshall struggled to find an answer to Kora Gustafson of Littlefork-Big Falls, who pumped in 34 points toward a 58-30 victory over the Wrens. The Wrens were...
