"Our pitching has been consistently above average with guys like Grant Biebl, Nikko Gentilini and Jack Battaglia leading the group on the mound." Defensively, the squad...

Earlier this week, MnDOT crews began concrete repairs from a heat blowout on I-35 southbound just south of the Moose Lake entrance ramp. This work is south of the I-35 construction work near Barnum. More information about that project can be found on the website: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/d1/projects/i35-barnum/index.html....
What are we missing? We think (1) climate change is an existential issue requiring major, immediate, bipartisan government action; (2) government and policy that reflect the majority would promote a more perfect union, and (3) more unites us than divides us. But others disagree. We invited you to tell us. What are we missing? We’ll be ready with notebook and pencil to write down what you tell us, at these locations 4-5 p.m. Thursdays: • TJ’s in Mahtowa July 14 • The porch at the Chickadee in Barnum July 21 • Tables in front of Joe Jitters i...

Perhaps the most exciting news out of Moose Lake is the return of the Clark-Olsen Agate Stampede at 3 p.m. Saturday following a pandemic pause the last two years. The Carlton County forecast for Monday includes a military flyover and parades in the morning, followed by family-friendly fun all afternoon and a movie and fireworks at night. As of Wednesday morning, it also included a 40-percent chance of rain, but Cloquet July Fourth organizers are optimistic ... and determined. "We haven't had to cancel in the past 10 years, maybe ever, so we are hopeful Mother Nature will work around our activities," said co-coordinator Jana Peterson. Both the communities...
A public meeting Monday regarding captive deer, elk and moose farms yielded two surprises: news of a new elk farm in the county and a state agency’s refusal to give county officials any information regarding the new business. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health denied a request by Carlton County for any information on a new elk farm in Moose Lake Township. The reason for the denial was that the site location is considered proprietary information and protected. Neither the county or township was consulted on the new venture. County land c...
From writing golf stories for the fabulous award-winning Pine Knot newspaper and with my 50-plus years as a member of Cloquet Country Club, most readers likely associate me as a golf advocate and not an angler. It’s hard, but I try to do both. And I can’t let Pine Knot outdoors writer Bret Baker have all the fun. This is a story about fishing. My parents had a cabin on Eagle Lake in Cromwell when I was a little kid, so I had exposure to fishing as a youth. I won a True Temper fishing reel and pole in a Cloquet Co-op Credit Union’s annual meeti...

Seconds later, Nicollet center fielder Brooklyn Bode snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when she tracked down the near home run ball, crashed into the fence and held on for the catch and the opening out. Two batters later, the final out was recorded...
It began raining at midday on June 19, 2012. Five inches and about 10 hours later, I found myself driving in the heart of what has simply become known as the 2012 flood. I had been working two jobs. One was for the weekly newspaper in Two Harbors and another was for the daily News Tribune in Duluth. When I pulled off the expressway coming back from Two Harbors and into Duluth, I called the News Tribune office and reported what I had seen. Water was covering blocks and blocks of Superior Street and it was rushing down the avenues. Debris was...
