After Cloquet school board members seemed to indicate in March they were OK with the idea of increasing player fees for hockey, four of five board members present voted against the proposal Monday. Hockey players already pay the highest school activity fee. On the other hand, the cost of the high school program is far less than families pay for youth hockey as their children get older, superintendent Michael Cary had pointed out in March. According to the Cloquet Amateur Hockey Association website, the top fee for Bantam players (ages 13-14)...
Contract negotiations between the Wrenshall school district and its teachers went to the rare step of mediation last month in order to resolve sticking points. The contract, expected to be formally approved by the board at a special meeting next week, will date back to July 1, 2021. One board goal, to increase the starting wage for new teachers in the district,...

Records continue to fall and the dialogue of which specific generation of teams and individuals is the "best" is a top local coffee shop conversation igniter. Thanks to Dwight Cadwell, WKLK radio personality and local sports expert, I was corrected on who holds the...

As we all know, March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. It is the Irish celebration of the day St. Patrick is said to have cast out the snakes from Ireland. But there is also another celebration the day before, St. Urho’s Day, on March 16. The Urho legend includes the story of St. Urho casting out the frogs by the power of his voice, which he got by drinking feelia sour (sour whole milk) and eating kala mojakka (fish soup). Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Happy St. Urho’s Day to all! Kindergarten roundup...
