"Esko, Cloquet, Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum, Carlton, Wrenshall, Proctor, Cloquet, Hermantown, Cromwell, and McGregor were all at the meet," said Esko coach Jerimy Hallsten who hosted the event. After deliberating at three meetings over the past two weeks, Cloquet school board members voted Monday to require universal masking indoors for grades K-12 once school starts on Sept. 8. The mandate doesn't apply to outdoor activities, including recess, sports or other classroom or school events. Masks are already federally required on all public transportation, including school buses. The vote and the conversation showed some shift from the board's committee of the whole meeting Friday, when t...
It’s not only metro area police departments that are seeing a rise in public safety employees claiming disability since the state changed its rules about job-induced post traumatic stress disorder. As reported in the July 30 issue of the Pine Knot, Cloquet has seen seven officers retire on disability since 2019 — when the new ruling went into effect — nearly a third of the department. Although the Public Employees Retirement Association covers approved disability payments, according to state law the employer is required to continue to provi...
Pine Knot News Over the past 20 days, the number of Covid-19 cases in Carlton County has increased by 141, while the number of deaths due to Covid went up by one. The Cloquet zip code showed the largest increase in number of cases in the Aug. 19 report, with 22 new cases versus seven (in Moose Lake) or fewer in other parts of the county. Over that same period, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Covid Data Tracker, Carlton County went from “moderate” Covid transmission to “substantial” to “high” for the period Aug. 1...
The old building at 219 St. Louis Avenue burned with a fury once firefighters finished their final practice sessions Saturday morning, torching one of the few remaining structures on Cloquet's Dunlap Island. From 8 a.m. to nearly noon, they lit fires and practiced putting them out in the many rooms of the apartment building, until the roof started to sag and it wasn't safe to be inside anymore. "I think we got 18 cycles in before the building got too unstable," said Cloquet Area Fire District...
John Arne Manisto, 91, of Cloquet died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021 in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was born on June 24, 1930 in Esko to Hilda E. and Arne F. Manisto. On Nov. 21, 1953, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Rowe in Saginaw. He and Betty were longtime members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. John served in the U.S. Air Force Jan. 8, 1951 to October 23, 1953. He was a member of the American Legion. John graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1957 with an advanced...
The more the Covid-19 pandemic lingers, the more questions pop up about how high schools sports seasons will be run this fall. Last week, activities directors across Minnesota hoped for guidance from the Minnesota State High School League as the fall seasons kicked off Monday with the official practices for football, cross country, volleyball, soccer, girls swimming, and girls tennis. Unfortunately, the directors didn't get much more information than they already had. "I was not surprised with...
Although summer is winding down, we can still enjoy the warm temperatures and our favorite ice cream treat. I thought back to when I was a kid and my mom would buy one pint of ice cream from Bystrom's Grocery on the corner of Highway 33 and Freeman Road in Sunnyside. That pint of vanilla ice cream would be divided into five slices and served on homemade apple pie or cantaloupe for a Sunday evening treat for my family. In those days we bought ice cream in small amounts because the freezer...
It has been 100 years since Finland natives John and Hannah Konu bought and moved to land west of Moose Lake near the Kettle River. Their grandson, Gerry, and great-grandson, Mark, are carrying on the family tradition of farming the land despite the continued decrease of small family farms. Gerry and Mark Konu will be honored at a reception at the Carlton County Fair on Saturday, where they will be presented with the award of Carlton County 2021 Farm Family of the Year from the University of...
Doris Lorane Naslund, 94, died peacefully at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton on Aug. 10, 2021. She was born April 8, 1927, in Barron County, Wisconsin to Herb and Grace Ellefson, and lived her early years on a farm in central Wisconsin. After graduating high school, she moved to Moose Lake. She met and married Allan Naslund and in 1951 they settled in Esko to build their home and family. Doris was an active, lifelong member of St. Matthews Church, where she always enjoyed worshipping and serv...
Don’t look now, but the fall sports season is right around the corner. In fact, local teams will be hitting the fields and courts within the next two weeks, and practices officially begin on Monday and captains practices are happening already. This week the Pine Knot News checked in with a number of local activities directors to find out how this season is shaping up as Covid-19 cases are on the rise again. “As of today everything is a go and we have not heard otherwise from the Minnesota Sta...

We appreciate the forward thinking of local law enforcement by embracing the addition of Troy Homstad to their toolbox of public safety resources. Homstad is a social worker from the Human Development Center who is now working with the Cloquet, Fond du Lac, and Moose Lake police departments and the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office to support officers as they respond to 911 calls that aren’t necessarily crimes. Adding a social worker to the police force is an appropriate supplement to the hard and appreciated work of traditional law enf...
Upon arrival at the gathering on Cloquet's White Pine Drive, laughter and conversations echo down the block. Children jump in a bouncy house while firefighters attentively give tours of the giant trucks. Adults enjoy grilled food and chat with each other in lawn chairs scattered around the driveway. Cloquet Police Department stickers are plastered on everybody. Altogether, the positivity of this gathering encompasses what National Night Out (NNO) is about. The neighborhood around White Pine...
I always marvel over the magic of potluck dinners. Without comparing notes, everyone brings a homemade dish and, abracadabra, there's a variety of tasty foods representing the main food groups, including my favorite - dessert - with plenty to go around. That magic was on display at Cromwell pavilion last week as area DFLers gathered to celebrate accomplishments and support their friends and neighbors. The annual summer potluck for Minnesota House District 11A was the perfect opportunity to...
While Cloquet finance director Nancy Klassen painted a mostly positive picture of the city’s financial position last week, one number in particular stood out: a $3.2 million actuarially determined increase in the city’s long-term public safety expense, to cover ongoing and future insurance benefits for former police officers on disability. The issue is complicated because it involves actions by both the State of Minnesota and the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) which resulted in t...
It's not only big-city police departments that are using embedded social workers. Thanks to a state grant, a social worker from the Human Development Center is working with four law enforcement agencies here: the Cloquet, Fond du Lac and Moose Lake police departments, along with the Carlton County Sheriff's Office. Troy Homstad has been working out of an office at the Cloquet Police Department since April. Cloquet Sgt. Nate Cook said he loves having Homstad along when he is called to situations...

This year is the inaugural year for the Munger Mission. The Munger Mission was started by Jolene Steffens, owner of Carlton Bike Rental & Repair. The idea behind the mission is to spur people to get out and bike the Willard Munger Bike Trail. The mission is pretty simple and is a "do it at your own pace" type of challenge. Riders can either use their own bikes or rent through Carlton Bike Rental & Repair. Renting a bike for the mission would cost $35. Other rental options are two hours at $14...

ROCK ON Moose Lake was rockin' last weekend for the annual Agate Days festival. Even without the signature "stampede" on Elm Avenue, crowds turned out for Art in the Park, which featured all kinds of art, music and food trucks at the city park all day Saturday. Rock hounds and more made their way to a gem and mineral show inside and outside Riverside Arena both days. Others just took advantage of the city beach to escape the heat with a swim in the cool waters of Moosehead La...
Summer festival season is upon us. This weekend Moose Lake and Wright will celebrate their signature events, with Agate Days running Saturday and Sunday and Wrong Days in Wright kicking off Friday. Wright may be the only city in Carlton County that can still claim an “annual” festival, as organizers there did not pause the Wrong Days in Wright celebration because of the pandemic. It was business as usual last year — with masks added to the mix — and it’s business as usual this year: think three days of smalltown fun for everyone. Check out...
