  • A paddling perspective: enjoy nature quietly

    Ruth Reeves|Jul 9, 2021

I surely love a fun ride in a fast motorboat, but people-powered paddling is my favorite way to explore from the water. Some of my fondest memories on the water are from a canoe or kayak point of view. The quiet of a people-powered boat allows paddlers to explore in stealth mode and enjoy nature when it is most unsuspecting. Our scenic corner of the world includes a big menu of waters from which to select for paddling fun. We have rivers that are slow and calm, and ones that are fast and...

The Carlton County Board of Commissioners took the next step toward the construction of a new hangar and relocated fuel system at the Cloquet Airport this week, but the price tag was higher than originally predicted. On Monday, commissioners approved a $2.066 million bid for a new hangar at the airport, along with a bid for $660,000 to relocate and upgrade the fuel system. The majority of the costs are being covered by federal and state grants; there are fees for use of the fuel system. When the...

  • Pandemic ebbs, but it's still part of life

    Jana Peterson|Jul 2, 2021

As the largest community gathering in at least 18 months approaches - the July Fourth holiday - public health nurse Jenny Barta pointed out the pandemic isn't over. "Just because the mask mandate is no longer in effect doesn't mean that Covid went away," said Barta, the Carlton County disease prevention and control coordinator and a frontline worker in the pandemic. "It's still circulating in our communities, but not at the rate that it was in the winter and the early spring months." Because of...

  • Carlton News

    Leola Rodd|Jul 2, 2021

Happy Independence Day. I hope folks will celebrate safely with family and friends now that most of the pandemic restrictions have been lifted. About three weeks ago, I had the opportunity to have a get-together with family and friends to celebrate my 75th birthday and even enjoy a visit from my son and daughter-in-law from California. We ate a lot of food, took family pictures and played some lawn games, including molkky — a gift from the Lance Seboe family. Molkky, aka finska, is a popular F...

  • Health care workers honored in Cloquet parade

    Jul 2, 2021

The unanimous selection for this year’s grand marshals of the July Fourth parade is a group of people who worked hard and risked much over the past 18 months: health care workers. “All health care workers, from those in nursing homes and school settings to clinics and hospitals, public health nurses and more, deserve our thanks for taking care of us during the pandemic,” committee members said in a joint statement. “We hope everyone who is watching the parade Sunday will make them feel special — and reach out to thank the many who can’t be ther...

    Pine Knot News|Jun 25, 2021

Here is the current schedule of July Fourth events in Carlton County. Cloquet 8 a.m. Sawdust 5K race at Pinehurst Park. Register in advance at www.tempotickets.com/sawdust2021. • Barnum takes swing at tourney

    Kerry Rodd|Jun 25, 2021

Very quietly, the Barnum golf program is putting the town on the map. The little town sitting between Cloquet and Moose Lake has produced boys and girls basketball championships and has been at the top in softball numerous times, but in eight of the 10 years of the program, it has produced caliber players who went on to play in the Minnesota Class A state tournament. This season, Delaney Kocher went to state for the second time. “Delaney was our most senior returning player this year,” said coa...

  • Glints of glory at state meet

    Kerry Rodd|Jun 25, 2021

Last week's Minnesota State Class A boys and girls track meet yielded a few surprises in the weight events for both boys and girls, two of those by area athletes. In the boys discus event, Esko's Gage Stankiewicz was a heavy favorite to take the title, but notice was served by South Ridge's Deekon Anvid in sectionals. Anvid narrowly missed beating Stankiewicz, who had recorded the longest throws in the state this season. In the state meet, Stewartville's Will Tschetter and Anvid both surprised,...

  • Letter to the editor: Watch how things are defined in St. Paul

    Pine Knot News|Jun 18, 2021

While watching Minnesota’s legislative committee and floor sessions, some debate arose in my mind about the discussions. One surrounded small businesses. As legislators are drafting legislation, it is important for the public to know what the “small business” definition is. In an email exchange with a house member, the member was reluctant to relay the exact definition. It’s important to know who lawmakers are talking about because it affects a large percent of Minnesota businesses. It all means various businesses were eligible for federal...

    Pine Knot News|Jun 18, 2021

Sheila graduated from Cromwell High School in 1986. She was a fantastic wife and mother who was incredibly dedicated to her family and children. Sheila was the domestic engineer around the house, attending to the yard, garden, or current project they were working on. She loved to feed the hummingbirds and enjoyed watching the deer. Sheila was a great c...

  • Rebels, Panthers, Eskomos race to state appearances

    Kerry Rodd|Jun 18, 2021

In Thursday's boys Section 7A meet, Moose Lake/Willow River had four first-place finishes, but that was not enough to overcome the depth of the teams which finished in first and second. The Rebels grabbed first place in the 4x200-meter and 4x800 relays and then got second place in the 4x100 relay behind South Ridge. The Rebels won the 4x200 in 1:34.37, the 4x800 in 8:20.25, and then ran a 45.18 in the 4x100, which was second to the South Ridge's 44.91. The boys title went to...

  • County to study its own labor agreement

    Dan Reed|Jun 11, 2021

Hot on the heels of a months-long Cloquet debate, Carlton County is taking its turn to determine whether its own Project Labor Agreement (PLA) — dating back to 2013 — for county construction projects should be dropped or amended. The county’s PLA calls for public construction projects to be completed by workers that are members of a union. The Carlton County PLA only affects projects estimated to be bid for more than $175,000. Unlike Cloquet, the county PLA doesn’t apply to private construction, only publicly funded projects. All county...

  • From here to Haiti, group provides assistance

    Jana Peterson|Jun 11, 2021

Imagine you have a child, whose life depends on getting a daily dose of medication that is available, but you can’t afford it. Just $1 a day could make a difference between life and a slow decline toward death. That’s a situation Dr. Emmanuel Mareus, aka “Doctor Manno,” sees too often at his medical center and mobile outreach clinics in Haiti. “Diabetes is not a disease that will kill you, like cancer,” he said. “And as a parent, you know that, but can’t afford this.” Mareus spoke in the dini...

  • Softball playoffs: Esko, ML/WR clipped

    Kerry Rodd|Jun 11, 2021

When the Section 7AA tournament continued Tuesday, Moose Lake/Willow River and Greenway were the two lone unbeaten squads. Esko, Eveleth-Gilbert, Proctor and Rush City were also remaining, but those four teams had one loss apiece and were a game away from elimination. The only two teams remaining now are undefeated Greenway and once-beaten Proctor, which marched through three straight wins to gain the championship round on Thursday. Tuesday's games featured teams that all had one loss. Esko, the...

  • 7A track: Esko dominates at subsection meet

The Esko boys and girls track teams swept last Thursday's Section 7A South Subsection meet at home, with the girls winning by 54.5 points over second-place Proctor and the boys team beating Proctor by 43.5 points. The subsection meet was the first giant step toward a trip to state.
