  • Number jumble remains alarming

    Jana Peterson|Nov 27, 2020

For several weeks now, Carlton County has seen a surge in its Covid-19 numbers. Not only are the day-to-day numbers of positive cases jumping by alarming amounts — by 81 on Sunday, 77 on Tuesday — the percentage of positive cases is also climbing. While increased numbers of tests will usually result in higher numbers of both positive and negative cases, more tests do not automatically equate to a higher percentage of positive tests. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the per... Full story

  • Bringing rubbed grub to Moose Lake

    Lois E. Johnson|Nov 27, 2020

Dinel and Lance Hollerbach were asked to smoke a whole hog for a birthday barbecue years ago, but they didn't have a smoker that was big enough. "One man said that he had a big roaster," Dinel said recently. "We went to look at it in the woods. There was a tree growing through it." They brought the smoker home and Lance used his welding and fabricating skills to fix it up. "When he pulled up with it at the place where we were going to smoke the hog, people laughed and called him a redneck,"...

  • The ticker: A quick look at area teams in action

    Pine Knot News|Nov 20, 2020

Covid-19 affects playoff picture Local playoff football teams have had their seasons sliced by Covid-19 and the playoffs have turned into an extension of those problems. Carlton-Wrenshall was scheduled to play at Hinckley-Finlayson on Tuesday night, but the Raptors had to forfeit due to Covid exposure of their team. South Ridge was scheduled to open the playoffs against McGregor on Friday night, but that game was also a forfeit as the Mercs are unable to field a team. That means the Panthers will move on to the second round of the Section 5... Full story

In a neighborhood volleyball match up on Thursday, Nov. 12, host Barnum improved its record to 9-1 on the season with a 25-9, 25-8, 25-8 win over Moose Lake/Willow River, which had to scramble players after a Covid-19 exposure. "We played well together and used everyone on the court," said Barnum coach Corina Newman. "We served well with only three service errors all night." While the Bombers were excited about picking up a win against their perennial tough neighbors, the Rebels were trying to u... Full story

  • The where and how of local testing

    Pine Knot News|Nov 20, 2020

There are two types of diagnostic tests in use across Minnesota: PCR tests and antigen tests. PCR — which stands for polymerase chain reaction — tests are the nose-swab tests or the saliva tests and they are very accurate. They require specialized lab equipment to process the samples, so it takes some time — often days — to get results. Antigen tests, or “rapid tests,” use either a nasal or throat swab to collect samples. They can deliver results pretty quickly, some as quickly as 15 minutes.... Full story

  • County Covid cases surge

    Jana Peterson|Nov 13, 2020

Covid-19 is here in greater numbers than ever before, Carlton County, and it's going to get worse before it gets better. How much worse depends on our residents, and how well we heed recommendations for masking, social distancing, hand washing and quarantining - that's the message local public officials sent during a press conference Tuesday. "We have reached a critical time pretty quickly, and my fear is this is just the beginning," Community Memorial Hospital doctor and head of the CMH... Full story

  • Wild ride with the weather

    Jana Peterson|Nov 13, 2020

Moose Lake resident Karen Slater captured this photo of a late-season watercraft rider on Moosehead Lake Sunday, when the temperature reached into the low 70s. Less than three days later, Carlton County got more than half a foot of snow overnight Tuesday. By 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Cloquet's Darin Nelson, below, had already used the snowblower on his sidewalk and driveway and was cleaning up with a shovel with a remarkably sunny attitude considering the wet heavy snow that made up the bottom layer...

  • Smattering of ballots trickle into auditor's office

    Jana Peterson|Nov 13, 2020

As of Monday afternoon, six days after the election, exactly eight late mail ballots had arrived at the Carlton County auditor’s office, not exactly a game changer. Although the Pine Knot News did not receive a final report from the auditor’s office after the deadline Tuesday, a look at the Secretary of State’s website shows both the Democrat and Republican presidential candidates each gained four votes. All late ballots had to be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by the end o...

  • Cloquet schools go distance, add 'asynchronous' day

    Jana Peterson|Nov 13, 2020

With the numbers of positive Covid-19 cases climbing rapidly, students in grades 7-12 started distance learning Tuesday and grades K-6 will make the switch next Monday, despite the fact that last week's numbers didn't meet the state benchmark for changing elementary school students to distance learning, a last resort. Superintendent Michael Cary told school board members he doesn't expect the schools to change back to hybrid or in-person learning anytime soon at Monday's meeting. "The numbers... Full story

  • Panthers sweep Wrens

    Jana Peterson|Nov 13, 2020

"Scrappy" couldn't quite overcome "tall and athletic" on Monday, but the Wrenshall volleyball team competed hard against it in Monday's home match against South Ridge. The Panthers swept the Wrens 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-12). It's been a good season for the Panthers (now 7-1) said head coach Brad Olesiak, explaining that they graduated four seniors last year but welcomed members of an undefeated junior varsity squad into the varsity ranks this season. "I thought they would fit in perfectly with... Full story

  • Testing: the why, where and how of Covid tests

    MPR News|Nov 13, 2020

State health officials have said for months that accurate and accessible testing is a key tool in understanding and combating Covid-19 in Minnesota. The most commonly administered Covid-19 tests in Minnesota are diagnostic tests, which determine whether you are infected with the coronavirus at the moment you're tested. Those are the tests that the state reports in its daily updates - and the tests that help epidemiologists understand the spread of Covid-19 across the state. There are two types... Full story

My husband, Bob, came home last week after being gone for six weeks, after a stay in the hospital and five weeks at North Shore Estates in West Duluth. He could hardly wait to get back home, and I hope he behaves himself and doesn’t injure his back by lifting things he shouldn’t lift. Bob thanks everyone for the many cards and messages of encouragement that made the time go faster and being away from home easier to deal with. Congratulations to Pam Rahja, who retired Oct. 30 after more than 34...

Due to the pandemic, the annual Christmas auction fundraiser will not be held this year. The Carlton VFW will still need help from the community and businesses. Monetary donations will go i...

    Nov 6, 2020

While many polling places in Carlton County were busy Tuesday, Thomson Township voters took it to a whole new level, with many waiting in line for more than an hour in a line that morphed throughout the day. By 4:30 p.m., the line snaked from the side of the parking lot up to the top of the hill behind the building, then back down the side of the grassy field next to the building and around the parking lot before going inside. The fact that most people were trying to stay 6 feet apart was... Full story

  • Updated: Covid continues to stalk schools

    Jana Peterson|Nov 6, 2020

When the 14-day Covid-19 rate in Carton County came in at 20.54 Thursday, Oct. 29 - surpassing 20 cases per 10,000 residents - it meant school districts needed to consider moving all students to a hybrid learning model. But state officials also say that the county-level data is only a starting point: school districts should also consider the number of confirmed cases, quarantines, and close contacts in their school community, at each school building, and other data such as individuals with... Full story

For members of the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard, every day is a veteran's day. On Tuesday, they honored veteran Richard Allen Kedrowski, a veteran of the Army, Air Force and Minnesota Air National Guard who died at the age of 77 on Oct. 28. He had a "colorful" military career, his son said, pointing out during the service that his dad was stationed in Germany when the Berlin Wall went up in 1961, and again when it came down in 1989. While the family remembered their husband, father and friend... Full story

Multiple single-day records have been set in the county since then, and overall cases rose from 483 on Oct. 28, to 679 on Wednesday, Nov. 4, an increase of 196 cases in seven days. From Tuesday to Wednesday of this week alone, the numbers jumped by 50. The state also tracks Covid cases weekly by zip code, with results released every Thursday. By zip code, Cloquet... Full story

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Oct 30, 2020

Important news for Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright: The church council decided to hold in-person worship services only on the first Sunday of the month, due to recent low attendance, the pandemic, and the cold, darker winter months to come. This should be a savings on the fuel bill and also keep the congregation safer. Pastor Deb will resume 9 a.m. online services starting Nov. 8. We thank all for their participation and generous donations during the past nine months of the shutdown. Cole...
