After a slowdown last week, positive COVID-19 cases in Carlton County increased rapidly over the past week, rising from 219 total cases on Sept. 16 to 246 on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Martin Robert Burch, 73, of Cromwell passed away Sept. 18, 2020, in his home with his family by his side. He was born July 4, 1947, in Moose Lake to Elvin and Petronella (Pionk) Burch. Martin graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1966. After high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. A Hermantown woman was sentenced to five years in prison this week after pleading guilty to third-degree murder for selling methamphetamine to a Moose Lake woman who died afterward. A woman died Saturday from injuries suffered in a crash between a side-by-side ATV in which she was a passenger and a car. According to a press release from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in at 3:16 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, reporting the crash on the Soo Trail east of Moose Lake. Federal funds sent to counties to address the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic have started to be allocated through Carlton County officials. Board of commissioners members approved funding in four general categories at their meeting Tuesday, Sept. 8, drawing from the $4.4 million received in July. Janice "Jan" A. Menze, 82, passed away on Aug. 28, 2020 at Inter-Faith Care Center. Jan was born on January 14, 1938 in Moose Lake to Toge and Helen Anderson.
