Cloquet resident and Esko businessman Pete Radosevich has been officially endorsed as the DFL candidate for House District 11A seat in this year's election, running against Jeff Dotseth, the previously endorsed Republican candidate. Both Radosevich and Senate District 11 candidate John Peura of Moose Lake earned endorsements at the DFL Senate District 11 Convention at Barnum High School Saturday, March 19. Radosevich was not unopposed. Retired economist Ann Markusen of Cromwell announced at the...
A woman charged with hitting a car and then coming back and hitting one of its occupants made her first appearance in Carlton County Sixth District Court last week. Rebecca Lee Glader, 38, faces seven charges, including three counts of felony criminal vehicular operation with substantial bodily harm and leaving the scene of an accident, along with gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor traffic violations including failure to stop, failure to notify police, reckless driving and violating the “keep to the right” traffic law. Glader’s attorney, Andre...
Editor’s note: This column was written for Sunshine Week — an initiative by newspapers across the country to shine a light on the need for open government and access to public information — two years ago. This year, Sunshine Week was scheduled for March 13-19, but we agree with the writer that a person’s right to know should not be limited, and that includes promoting that right through editorials in your local newspaper. Enjoy. The media are most definitely not your enemy. Far from being the enemy of the people, day in and day out we take ou...
If you use the Cloquet clock, it was supposed to be spring this week. Gordy’s is open. Alas, that rite of spring and harbinger of summer rarely means we get matching weather, even as the conventional calendar says we’ve reached “meteorological” spring. But here we are, in that waiting room between real warm and lingering winter. It has been an especially difficult end of winter here at the Pine Knot. Jana has been stuck at home with a bum leg for two months, meaning we can’t count on her ramblings about the community for pictures and all the t...
At Cloquet coach Rol Bromberg's recent visitation at Nelson Funeral Care, I was astounded by the preeminent collection of athletic and family photos on display. Undefeated football teams, track regional relay champs, Brom and his wife at Twins games, hugs with grandkids, birthdays, his own high school and college awards, the dedication of Bromberg Field. One particular picture brought a twinkle to my eye: a photo of Bromberg and Dickie Eklund out on the Athletic Park football field, dated 1979....
Area fans of University of Minnesota Duluth hockey player Koby Bender, who is from Cloquet and is a former Lumberjack, came out in force in St. Paul last weekend as the Bulldogs won the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff tournament at Xcel Energy Center, taking two games Friday and Saturday. Bender scored a hat trick the week before to propel UMD into the "final four" weekend and the conference tournament win. The team began NCAA tournament play Thursday afternoon in...
The Minnesota Wilderness completed a 5-1 road trip to Alaska Saturday night with a 3-1 win against Kenai River. The Wilderness (30-21-1) swept the three-game series against the Brown Bears (13-36-5). It also marked the end of a nine-game road trip, of which the Wilderness won seven. Barrett Hall led the way Saturday night, with a goal and an assist, while Matt Smith shined again in net, making 29 saves. The road success propelled the Wilderness to take sole possession of third place in the NAHL’s Midwest Division. It also sets up a showdown s...

It was a quiet Friday afternoon, until it wasn’t. On Friday, March 6, 2020 — the Minnesota Department of Health announced the first case of Covid-19 had been confirmed in Minnesota. It set off a whirlwind of drastic change in the state, including in Carlton County. A lot has happened in the two years since then. Minnesota’s first year living with Covid-19 was marked by uncertainty, the loneliness of being apart and a lockdown. Near the end of 2020, there was hope, as Minnesotans began to be vaccinated. In 2021, things loosened up as an incre...
The Minnesota Chippewa Tribal Executive Committee voted 7-5 Monday to censure Kevin Dupuis Sr., chairperson of the Fond du Lac Reservation Business Committee. Other than the disapproval implied by the censure, the vote came with no consequences from the committee. There seemed to be consensus among many of those voting both ways that the issue would be better addressed by Fond du Lac band members. The tribal committee, or TEC, comprises the chairperson and secretary/treasurer of each of the six...
With five-time incumbent state representative Mike Sundin announcing that he won't run for re-election, this year's race for the Minnesota House of Representatives District 11A seat is heating up with familiar faces from both parties joining the race. Since the Sundin announcement, only one Democrat has announced intentions to seek the seat that covers all of Carlton County and part of St. Louis and Pine counties. Pete Radosevich, an attorney who lives in Cloquet and is also the publisher of...

Two new reports released this month by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Minnesota Department of Health find that air pollution continues to pose a threat to public health in the Twin Cities area and other regional metropolitan centers in Minnesota, with impacts falling disproportionately on communities with more residents who are low-income, uninsured, people of color, or people with disabilities. The reports, “Life and Breath: Metro” and “Life and Breath: Greater Minnesota,” examine how air pollution affected health in 2015, the mos...
Former Cloquet Area Fire District chief Matt Ashmore signed a separation agreement with the CAFD board in December that provided him with $35,407 (equal to four months salary) and a payout of unused vacation time of $7,954. Ashmore was CAFD fire chief for only a year and was hired by the CAFD board after two searches to replace retired fire chief Kevin Schroeder. Ashmore had worked as a battalion chief and emergency medical services director before he moved here from Hibbing. When he resigned...
A Cloquet man is facing multiple felony charges after police found he had shared illegal pornographic videos featuring children on social media in 2020. Jaypee Selorico, 36, was arrested earlier this month and faces eight charges relating to the possession and dissemination of pornographic work, including two charges for pornographic work featuring a minor under the age of 13. Selorico appeared virtually in Sixth District Carlton County court on March 9 before judge Rebekka Stumme. Stumme set bail at $10,000 cash or $100,000 bond. According to...
It’s the petition that wouldn’t go away, or perhaps it’s just the angry district resident who won’t go away. An obviously distraught Tony Sheda repeated his demands to the Wrenshall school board Monday night that the creators of the petition that denied an appointment to the school board last August be responsible for the costs incurred by the school district to verify the petition. Despite repeated explanations and investigation of the issue that reached state offices in St. Paul, Sheda is yet to be satisfied, and apparently a majorit...
Our publisher, Pete Radosevich, is running for public office, he announced this week. And your local community newspaper, the Pine Knot News, is announcing that our publisher is being placed on sabbatical leave, effective immediately. He will no longer have any input on how we run this newspaper, and he will no longer contribute to the newspaper, including his column on these pages. There is no legal restriction preventing him from continuing to work for the paper. The First Amendment guarantees that the press is free from government restrictio...
This will be my last “Harry’s Gang” column for a while. I have decided to run for Minnesota House of Representatives in District 11A, which encompasses all of Carlton County and a small part of Pine and St. Louis counties. And I can’t do both. So, I’d like to share some of my random ideas I’ve accumulated since we started this paper a few years ago. My dad used to say that when just as many liberals complain that the local paper is too conservative as conservatives complain the paper leans...
