The 1963 Minnesota state high school boys basketball tournament runner-up trophy has a new permanent display at the Carlton County Historical Society in Cloquet. There is also now a film history of that magical season at the museum. The trophy came after what many basketball pundits still call the greatest state championship game ever, when Cloquet High School lost to Marshall by one point, 75-74, in front of more than 18,000 screaming fans at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of...

The West End Flourish began with a pebble in the pond. In 2020, the state of Minnesota formed the Artists on Main Street program, designed to provide funding to projects in small town parks and business districts throughout Minnesota. The following year the city of Cloquet and the Oldenburg Arts and Cultural Community (OACC) collaborated and received one of the four available grants out of some 41 applicants. Money was available for a two-year cycle. In spring of 2021 as the Covid pandemic was...
Once again, Cloquet will celebrate Labor Day with a parade. It's a tradition that's continued more than 105 years here, starting in 1917. The holiday was created in the late 19th century to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being, according to the Labor Department. "It's a staple in our community," said Labor Day celebration president Chad Tuura. "Labor unions are still strong in this area. We're part of this community." Monday's...
Nichole Diver is running for Cloquet School Board as a write-in candidate, joining Melissa Siltanen Juntunen and LeAnn M. Butler in a race that will feature three open seats. As a write-in, Diver won't be listed on the ballot in November, while Juntunen and Butler will because they filed in advance of the election deadline. That means voters will need to remember Diver's name when they go to the polls or mail in a ballot. That shouldn't be an issue. Born and raised here, she is an enrolled Fond...
A 70-year-old rural Carlton County man was flown by helicopter to a Duluth area hospital Tuesday evening after an ATV crash west of Mahtowa. According to a news release from the Carlton County Sheriff's Office, the man lost control of the ATV while exiting a gravel driveway on the 2500 block of County Road 4 just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27. The ATV ended up on top of the driver, who sustained significant injuries. Medical personnel determined he should be flown to the hospital. Steve...
For the second time in 14 months, the board of commissioners for the Cloquet/Carlton Housing & Redevelopment Authority fired its executive director. Trisha Osborn, formerly Trisha Morgando, was terminated effective July 26. The Pine Knot News learned of Osborn’s dismissal earlier this month. In response to a public data request, attorney Donald Erickson shared the dismissal letter and another letter denying the appeal of her dismissal. Erickson is a labor and employment law specialist with Fryberger Law Firm in Duluth who was hired by the Cloqu...
Jim and Carlie Nynas of Esko received a $25 gift certificate to Outdoor Advantage in Cloquet for being spotted for having an "I Think Knot" bumper sticker on their vehicle. The supporters of our independent, locally owned Pine Knot News were attending the grand opening of the Carlton County Justice Center last week....
With school set to start Wednesday, Sept. 4 in Cloquet, superintendent Michael Cary shared good and bad news with the board on Monday. The good news? The district is almost fully staffed, with the exception of a couple of last-minute resignations. Also, 22nd Street should be open to traffic from Washington Avenue to Doddridge Avenue by the start of school, although workers will be striping and doing other work between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on school days for a while. The bad news? The district could face a six-digit shortfall this year, following...
As I toured the new ceremonial Big Drum hall, Gimanidoowichigemin Gwaaba'iganing, last week in Sawyer, I felt the importance of the community efforts to see that this place was built, bringing Nimishomis (our grandfather, as the drum is called) home. Listening to speakers who delivered their comments in Ojibwe was an uncommon opportunity to hear the flow of the language as it must have been in community gatherings before the boarding school era, which deliberately attempted to destroy the...
What are two small beings who love being outdoors and delight in having two breakfasts? If you guessed Hobbits, the lovely little Shire folk from "The Lord of the Rings," you'd be wrong, but not far off the mark. Today we are talking about our twin daughters, Quinn and Avery. Each year as summer events wind down, we give them a "Yes Day" when they get to pick out the day's itinerary and menu. The fun of Yes Day is that each year is different, and we give the girls a rare childhood opportunity...
The Cromwell Park Pavilion grand opening on Aug. 23 was a big success. There were several talks, workshops, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation booths, lawn games and, best of all, food. We sincerely thank the City of Cromwell, city council members, and Mayor Zelazny for all their hard work on getting our park in such great shape. A $110,000 grant was secured for improved drainage as well as a DNR grant for outdoor recreation improvements, including a riverwalk along the...
On Friday, from a galaxy far, far away, the original Star Wars movie will return to Cloquet, this time with the dialogue dubbed in Ojibwe. "Anangong Miigaading," aka "Star Wars: A New Hope" will show for one week at Cloquet's Premiere Theatres. There will be English subtitles with the movie, for non-Ojibwe speakers or those who aren't fluent. The movie will run for a week, starting Aug. 30, with showings at 2, 4:40, and 7:30 p.m. daily. The story of the newly dubbed 1977 movie is one of...

Graffiti with white supremacist messaging appeared on and along paved pedestrian trails in Cloquet and Carlton earlier this week. "White Man Zone" was painted on the walls of the underpass on the north side of the pedestrian bridge over the St. Louis River in Cloquet. Farther down the wall was the Nazi SS Lightning Bolts symbol, commonly used in the white supremacy movement. Repeatedly, in both Cloquet and along the Willard Munger State Trail in Carlton, someone scrawled the website address for...
Take a trip to our agricultural past this weekend at the Lakehead Harvest Show. Located just off the intersection of Canosia and St. Louis River roads, this old-school working farm puts on a show every August. There's lots to see and do from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Aug. 23-25. Volunteers demonstrate all kinds of farm activities using old-school equipment to thresh, plow, crush rocks, plane wood and even make shingles. There's also food, blacksmithing and sawmilling...
Ten months ago, the Pine Knot News reported on concerns Carlton County officials expressed about the potential for runaway health care costs for county employees starting in 2025. A high number of claims had forced the county to use 5- and 10.5-percent caps on premiums in 2023 and 2024, with the county facing an uncapped future. At risk was a higher tax levy and the hard decisions that could have resulted from trying to contain other costs. But based on what transpired Aug. 13 during the county board meeting in Cloquet, it’s safe to say, ...
TThumbs up to another great Carlton County Fair. The 4-H projects and other exhibits were well done, the grandstand events were highly entertaining, the music was wonderful. As usual, it was wonderful to see so many people of all ages just out enjoying themselves and exploring everything the Barnum fairgrounds has to offer. Of special note: kudos to the fair board and director for the attention paid to the new additions at the fair. In addition to regular live music we have the Little Italy promenade and its snazzy neon signs, plus the...
I magine teenagers in Esko classrooms staring blithely, wantonly, perhaps a bit of drool forming at the corner of the mouth. But it’s not a window daydream accompanied by mesmerizing clouds forming into creatures or a squirrel running up a tree limb. They are fixed on those pouches. Filled with those tiny devices we all are so tethered to. This summer, the Esko school district decided to do something about phones in school, part of a movement across the country to reduce distractions during the school day. Now, when an Esko teen enters a c...
Sports history and lessons learned can be very valuable and enjoyable. College or professional, amateurs or on a playground, it doesn’t matter. All can bring us a sense of joy and eternal fond memories. We tell of legendary games and encounters to all who will listen. I have two golf stories worth repeating. Pine Knot subscriber Bob Bromme lives in Arizona now, but he grew up in Cloquet in the 1940s and 1950s. His dad enlisted in the Navy in 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor. He didn’t see him ag...

Edie retired after 30 years working at Diamond Match in Cloquet. Edie enjoyed socializing, playing cards, snowmobiling, motorcycling and golfing. She and Glenn were...
