A huge five-run inning by Duluth Marshall Wednesday, June 5, saw the Hilltoppers topple defending state champion Esko 9-0 in the semifinal round of the double-elimination tournament at Wade Stadium in Duluth. Lois Grace Lennartson of Midway Township went to her heavenly home Saturday, June 1, 2024. Lois was born June 3, 1927. She died just two days before her 97th birthday. Lois was the daughter of George and Hedwig Thorburg. She was one of four daughters, with Lindus being her identical twin. Lois married Elmer Lennartson on July 30, 1949. Darlene R. MacMillan, 77, of Carlton passed away May 26, 2024, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. She was born June 10, 1946, the daughter of Charlie and Myrtle (Moe) Olesiak, and grew up on the family farm in Sawyer, Minnesota. They did it the hard way, but the Esko baseball team is the 2024 Section 7AA champion again. The defending state champs fell to Marshall Wednesday 9-0 but climbed back into the championship game and won a trip back to State. Earlier this week at the group home, we experienced a harrowing moment. One of our residents fell from bed, screaming he was hurt. Lying tense on the floor as we assessed his condition, his vocalization turned to a new refrain, “I’m afraid!” We felt so bad for him. We know him well, and understand his history of traumatic falls. We consoled and comforted him until he calmed. The Cloquet Area Fire District paramedics were able to assess him, deem him unharmed, and help return him to bed. Members of the Carlton County board and the Fond du Lac tribal council are scheduled to meet in June. The entities meet twice annually, and the topic of how the county ought to host the meeting came up during the board’s March 14 meeting in Carlton. A 32-year-old Moose Lake man is in Carlton County Jail awaiting sentencing following a guilty plea in March to felony criminal sexual conduct. The charge is related to a 2023 incident involving a vulnerable 15-year-old girl. Justin Eugene Arbuckle pled guilty March 6 to third-degree penetration of a victim under 18 — impaired/incapacitated/helpless.
