    Feb 23, 2024

William "Weazer" Carpenter was taken, too soon, from this world on Feb. 20, 2024. Even until his last day, he made people smile and laugh, as he did most days of his life. Weazer had a magnetic personality that drew people to him. His charisma is just one of the reasons he was loved by so many. He had a zest for life and lived each day as a party. Weazer enjoyed working on small engines. He was also an incredibly talented musician and singer. One of his favorite spots was down by the river....

Finally legal Marlys Kilen of Cloquet will celebrate her 21st birthday on Feb. 29. "I'll be at an age when I can start to drink," chortled Kilen, who will be 84 years old. Growing up in Lakefield, in southern Minnesota - where she had one classmate, her future husband's cousin, born on the same day - her parents couldn't agree when to celebrate her birthday in non-leap years. Mom said Feb. 28. Dad suggested March 1, because she would be officially another year older then. "So we celebrated both...

  • For Janae, it's all smiles ... and a crowning moment

    Mike Creger|Feb 16, 2024

The smile on Janae Sjodin's face was everything. But then someone must have said, "But wait, there's more." Wrenshall High School principal Michelle Blanchard called it all "surreal," like "something out of a movie." That Sjodin - the 2023 winter homecoming queen - was at the 2024 coronation on Friday, Feb. 9, to present new royalty was a real miracle. Eleven months ago, she was driving home with her sister Jaela after softball practice when their SUV was hit on Janae's side by a driver who...

  • Letter to the Editor: Roundabouts can work, I've seen it

    Feb 16, 2024

I attended the Minnesota Highway 33 meeting on Feb. 1 at the Cloquet Library. Here are some things I can say about the discussion. I heard someone say the roundabout at Washington Avenue and 14th Street doesn’t work. I live close to that intersection, and when it first opened up, I took a walk along the sidewalk to the intersection and stood there for 10 or 15 minutes to observe the traffic flow. I saw cars, trucks, buses, and the big semi-tractor trailers, with the trailer, traversing it without difficulty. It worked smoothly. I use this round...

The Cloquet public works employees say it's the earliest they've taken down the temporary ice rink. The rink was flooded before Christmas, then warm weather melted the ice away. They flooded again in January and skaters did get in a little time on the...

    Feb 16, 2024

Young scientists got a taste of scientific scrutiny at this year's 72nd annual Northeastern Minnesota Regional Science Fair Saturday, where participants were outnumbered by judges 2-to-1. Regional co-director and Cloquet science fair coach Cindy Welsh said she was worried the judges would be unhappy with the lower student numbers, but she heard no complaints. "They all said the projects were fewer, but better," she said. Numbers have been a rollercoaster since Covid, with teacher dropout an...

Pine Knot News regular photographer Amber Nichols has some incredible pictures of the sun's magic on her Facebook page, under AmbersImpressions....

  • Council ponders Highway 33 proposal

    Jana Peterson|Feb 9, 2024

Cloquet City Councilors know where the Wood City Riders stand on potential plans for Minnesota Highway 33, after an hour-long presentation by club president Chris Rokke. They appeared to agree with Rokke on at least one point: that any highway modifications need to include some kind of multi-use trail or trails for pedestrians, bicyclists, ATVs and snowmobiles on the west side of the highway, particularly between Perkins and Pinehurst Park, where a steep hill leaves little space for anyone...

Sundquist has previously gotten mail intended for this person. (We blotted out his name here.) In past instances, Sundquist just put any misdelivered mail back in...

    Feb 9, 2024

The Pine Knot News asked the two members of the Minnesota Legislature who represent the area to offer their views on the session that begins on Monday, Feb. 12. The often head-spinning budget session of 2023 had both Republicans, Sen. Jason Rarick and Rep. Jeff Dotseth, questioning the spending decisions of Democrats, who control the House and Senate in the current biennium. That control includes Democrat Gov. Tim Walz. State lawmakers' primary job following an election year is to create a...

  • Korby's Connections: So much spring already

    Steve Korby|Feb 9, 2024

The gentle breeze was swirling at 7 miles per hour from a north-northwest direction. It was sunny, and a beautiful Groundhog Day, Friday, Feb. 2, 2024. Earlier in the day, Punxsutawney Phil had predicted an early spring. Being retired from full-time employment, I have the luxury of taking afternoon walks, sometimes with my bride or others, at various regional locations. On this particular day, since there was hardly any snow, I was walking the 2.5K loop at Cloquet's Pine Valley Ski Area and...
