The issue of using outside social workers received a second vote in a month at Monday's Carlton County board meeting, where one commissioner continued to vote "no." Commissioner Tom Proulx was the lone dissenting vote in the board's 4-1 approval to use case management services from TLC of Duluth to help address a surge in cases involving people on elderly and disability waivers. Unlike at the meeting Nov. 14, when Proulx conducted an in-depth inquiry of county staff and administration and told...

Numerous shows are already sold out, so getting tickets now will ensure a seat. The County Seat Theater Company will present local performances of "Christmas... Full story

There seems to be a cultural crisis facing Barnum that threatens the very existence of the city and its high school. The crisis? Kids at the school this fall elected two boys as the top homecoming royalty. There’s been no such thing as a homecoming “king and queen” in Barnum since 2019, when the annual tradition morphed into “royalty,” rather than kings and queens. Now, the students vote for a slate of popular kids and the top two vote-getters are the royalty of the homecoming court. No kings.... Full story

A Carlton County board meeting flared hot Tuesday, when commissioner Tom Proulx and county staff squared off over the use of contracted social work. Despite a 4-1 vote affirming the use of contracted social workers to address a surge in disability services and long-term elder care cases, the preceding debate stirred tensions at a time of union contract negotiations. Proulx first squared off with public health and human services director David Lee over the issue. “What would happen if we said no?” asked Proulx. “I would have to come back and a...
B&B Market has been part of the Cloquet community for 65 years, a one-stop shop for many that offers gas, a full line of groceries, a meat department and catering. August 29 marked the second anniversary of the most recent change of ownership, to Jacob and Mikayla Richardson. Jacob had worked at B&B for several years before expressing interest in... Full story
There’s a real need for housing in Cloquet. It seems to me, slowly but surely, the central part of the city is deteriorating as more and more people move out to the larger lots available on the city’s edges. For example, some lots in the Sunnyside neighborhood are about one-third acre, while many lots in the older parts of Cloquet are much, much smaller. So when those older houses get too worn out to repair, they become vacant, taking up space that can’t readily be sold, because the lots are t... Full story

Poirier will fill the one year remaining in the term, until the 2024 election. It isn’t new ground for Poirier, who once served on the Barnum school board for 12 years. He was appoint... Full story

Jana Peterson [email protected] A Cloquet man convicted of murdering his pregnant girlfriend and her toddler is appealing that conviction to the Minnesota Supreme Court, on the grounds of prosecutorial misconduct, claiming the prosecutor created a scenario in her closing arguments that wasn’t supported by the facts of the case. Sheldon Thompson was found guilty by a Carlton County jury of eight counts of murder in June 2022, after five days of testimony. Five of the eight counts were first-d...
It may seem odd for a Vietnam War era military veteran to refer to his experiences as "fun," but that's how Jerry Tschida chooses to remember his time in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1969. It was certainly interesting, including trips aboard the USS Princeton to snatch astronauts from the sea and feeling the aftershock of a historic nuclear warhead test off an island in Alaska's Aleutian chain. But there are darker memories that bubbled up later in life. At age 35, he was diagnosed with post... Full story
