The 7-year-old was obviously confused Wednesday morning. Her school voted for Harris, why didn't the country? "I want a woman president." She pondered her school chum who had voted for the other guy. "But we are still friends." She asked rhetorically if the votes at her school had counted in the wider world. "I know, you have to be 18." I wondered if what she was spouting post-election was precocious or just how yet another person in the world can get so inundated with politics in the current st...
With all of Carlton County's 39 precincts reporting, the unofficial tallies from the 2024 general election brought some interesting results, including a win in the county for President-elect Donald Trump, who did not win Minnesota. The Republican was the top vote-getter - 50.1 percent to Vice President Kamala Harris' 47.6 percent - in a county that had nearly 90-percent voter turnout with more than 20,000 people submitting ballots. Voter turnout nearly matched the 92-percent mark made in 2020...

Nathan Barta is just 20, but he won in a landslide Tuesday, taking more than 50 percent of the vote for Thomson Township Supervisor Seat C while his opponents – Jaryn Edblad and John Bergman – garnered 27 and 22.6 percent. While the incoming Thomson supervisor is definitely the youngest person in Carlton County – or maybe even the state – to win election Tuesday, the University of Minnesota Duluth junior knows a thing or two about local politics. Two years ago he penned a guest column in the Pin...
Four days after graduating from high school in 1970, Gerald "Jerry" Manthey went on active duty in the Air Force. A crew chief/flight engineer, Manthey trained with B-52 bombers. His first assignment was at the K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, a strategic air command. Once there, Manthey started working on KC-135 planes, which were in-flight refueling tankers. He learned quickly how lucky he was to be working on the KCs. "Four engines instead of eight on a KC, eight on a B-52. Half the problems," he...

The ripple effects of Flint, Michigan — where a change of water supply caused water pipes to corrode and leach lead into the drinking water — are still expanding almost 10 years later, thanks in large part to a federal campaign to ensure clean drinking water everywhere. Cloquet is not Flint, but changing laws and standards around drinking water led to a mailing from the city of Cloquet to 2,100 residents last week about water lines and the potential for lead. Noting that the letters caused some alarm and lots of questions, public works dir...

After two rounds of playoffs, just two local football teams remain in the hunt for that elusive state tournament berth. Both of those teams, Moose Lake/Willow River and Cromwell-Wright, are rich in postseason success and were scheduled to play for section championships Thursday night, after the Pine Knot News went to press. The stunner in the second round was top-seeded Barnum falling, 22-14, in Section 7AA, to No. 4 Mesabi East. The Giants jumped on the Bombers in the first half and held a...
As some of you remember, I love watching the World Series, which I recorded on my DVR Friday night. Unfortunately, the DVR stopped recording at the end of the ninth inning, so I missed the walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th by Freddy Freeman. I’m hoping to see the replay when I watch the next game, and you can be sure I am recording all of the rest of the World Series games or watching them live from now on. Congratulations to Ari Dahl, as she placed ninth and qualified for the M...
Some people have simple goals. It seems obvious to many that Ron Delbow performed that goal with a known luster. Though his recent passing on Oct. 18 was met with sadness, along with that is also a feeling of lasting affinity and appreciation for this fellow. His obituary provided through McNearney-Schmidt Funeral in Shakopee, Minnesota said this: "Ronald retired from Model Stone, a cement block plant, and lived Up North where he built a home. After some time, he decided to go back to work and...
Downtown Carlton was bustling Saturday with a wild and wonderful array of monsters, witches, chickens, rock stars, critters, cartoon characters, superheroes and more than one girl named Wednesday. Businesses, organizations and a Care Bears friend group lined the sidewalks along Chestnut Street handing out candy to what felt like more than a thousand kids and their parents, there to trick or treat in broad daylight. Five-year-old Rowan (pictured below) and his mother AnnaMay Frazier spun up one...
