All three sons of Albert Beseman served during World War II in the early 1940s, said their nephew Clarence Badger, sharing photos of the three Wright-area men after the war. The photo of Leo, Jasper and John Beseman was taken in 1946, shortly after the war ended. Leo was on destroyers from 1941 to 1945. Two of those destroyers were torpedoed and he was lucky to be rescued both times. He ended his service in the Pacific Theater on another destroyer, the USS Elliot. Eldest brother John joined the... Veterans Day will be here Friday, Nov. 11, along with programs and meals to honor veterans, and a special section in the Pine Knot News filled with local veteran photos, years of service and more. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day in 1919 with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the vic... We held a beautiful visitation and memorial service for my husband, Bob Hanson, on Oct. 21 and 22. I’ve been sharing a few stories about Bob taken from his eulogy. Here’s my final installment: When we first got married, I planted a small garden in the front yard. It was only about 25 feet by 25 feet. I guess Bob figured I liked gardening, so the next year he plowed up a half-acre of the yard and planted the garden. Well, that was way too much for me to take care of and since harvest time was at the same time school resumed, I didn’t do much...
Incumbent State Senator Jason Rarick (R-Pine City) won easily in the District 11 race, with 22,111 votes (61%) to 14,152 (39%) for challenger Michelle Boyechko (DFL-Tamarack). He praised Boyechko for running a passionate and positive campaign, like previous opponents. "I see so many negatives in other races, that hasn't happened in our district," he said, noting that they both stuck to the issues during candidate forums rather than attacking one another. "That's something I really appreciate. It...
Films focus on migration of people to and from Cloquet While researching a theme for seven short films he'll debut next week in Cloquet, Augustin Ganley drew inspiration from a French word, "cloque," defined as blister. The word features dual meanings, both the kind you get from walking in new shoes, and, when adjusted to cloqué, an irregularly raised pattern in fabric design. "We have histories that are woven together here that are an irregular or uneven pattern," the 35-year-old Ganley said.... Full story
When Chris Gustafson arrived at Wrenshall School, his predecessor teaching industrial arts had quit after the district cut the teaching position to barely more than half-time. "They realized if they were going to keep a shop teacher, they better offer a full-time position," Gustafson said, happy to have filled the job for the last 17 years. In that time, Gustafson has seen the pendulum swing back toward training students for careers which don't always require four-year college degrees. On... Full story
Mankato East sported a pitch-perfect record entering its Thursday, Oct. 27 Class AA girls soccer state quarterfinal against Cloquet. The opposing Lumberjacks found out why. Ella Huettl had the game's only goal and the Cougars defense did what they usually do - give up nothing - in keeping Cloquet off the scoreboard in Mankato East's 1-0 victory on a brisk night at Irondale High School. The Lumberjacks were victim No. 20 in the Cougars' unblemished season, as third-seeded Mankato East (20-0)... Full story
We held a beautiful visitation and memorial service for my husband, Bob Hanson, on Oct. 21 and 22. Here are some additional passages I wrote and read from Bob’s eulogy: “Last Thursday, I was subbing in the fifth grade in Floodwood, and I wanted the kids to know that my husband had died so I might be a bit sad. But I also told them that I experienced a miracle today. I told them that I had misplaced the book, “Wild,” that I had been reading when school started, and when I walked into their room there it was on the teacher’s desk. It took a fe...
The Cloquet city council chambers was a revolving door Tuesday, as candidates for six races answered questions in the Cloquet Area Chamber of Commerce candidate forum, an election year tradition. All of the forums ran smoothly, with a quiet and polite Minnesota audience made up mostly of other candidates, their supporters and a handful of interested citizens. It was a far cry from most national or even statewide televised debates, with no rudeness or verbal fireworks, and zero rebuttals until th... Full story
In their second trip to State in as many years, the No. 3 ranked Lumberjacks boys soccer team beat a tough St. Cloud Tech 3-1 to earn a trip to the Bank, and they're excited. Elijah Aultman scored the first goal in the eighth minute at Thursday's quarterfinal game, hosted by Irondale High School in New Brighton. St. Cloud tied it in the second half and it was gridlock for a time, before two headed goals in the final eight minutes sealed the deal for Cloquet-Esko-Carlton. Sophomore midfielder... Full story

St. Anthony erupted for four goals in the first half to race to a 4-2 victory over No. 5 Esko at Kuhlman Stadium in Edina. Senior forward Anna Isaacson and senior midfielder Eileen Cardona had two goals each in the first half when the Huskies (12-3-1) built a 4-1 advantage. A 16-year-old Superior boy pleaded guilty Tuesday, Oct. 25, to second-degree felony assault, after firing shots at a carful of people during a July incident in Pinehurst Park in Cloquet. Appearing before Judge Amy Lukasavitz in District Court in Carlton, the boy admitted to firing a 9-millimeter handgun 12 times at the car. The incident was preceded by an argument and foot chase involving two other juvenile males in the park late in the evening July 2. The males fled after the assailant brandished the gun. Two women driving by picked up the...
I am writing to urge voters to bring fresh energy to the Cloquet school board. A review of candidate profiles as published in the Pine Knot News reveals the three incumbents are many years beyond having their own children in our schools. The two challengers, on the other hand, have children in our schools and are also presidents of their respective schools’ parent organizations. They know the issues facing our children, teachers and parents because they are deeply immersed in the day-to-day life of our schools, and therefore are uniquely q...
Last week, I read the Local Election Guide for 2022 from the Pine Knot News and was struck by a sense of flashback. I was amazed that Jeff Dotseth’s profile and approach to the questions posed were pretty much the same as the last two times that he lost his elections. Jeff’s main points are that he is not a Democrat and that all Democrats are the same and he is a Republican, and so he has a lock on what is best. Again, Jeff has offered no actual solutions, just the same whining about how he wants to be in charge. After all the things we hav...

A fire Friday afternoon left a downtown Carlton apartment building left a number of families without a home. The 911 call came in at roughly 3:41 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, reporting a structure fire at 218 Chestnut Ave. The caller reported an electrical fire and that smoke was coming from the second story of the multi-family apartment complex. Upon arrival, law enforcement noticed smoke coming from the apartment and primarily from an entry door of the complex. Multiple families were evacuated and... Full story
Thanks to a reader, we’ve got a deeper understanding of Cloquet’s sales tax ballot question. Or, questions, rather. The city of Cloquet is seeking a half-percent increase to its sales tax in order to fund roughly $8 million worth of projects at Pine Valley recreation area and the city’s adjacent indoor hockey rinks, the Barn and Northwoods Credit Union Arena. But early and absentee voters, like the reader, Dan Unulock of Cloquet, have noticed the ballot doesn’t restrict the sales tax increase to one question. Instead, it’s split into two quest... I am writing to urge my fellow neighbors to support my son, Jeff Dotseth, in his quest to be our next representative in District 11A. When Jeff decided to run for office, he warned me that people who supported his opponent would say things that I should just let slide because that is, unfortunately, how politics works. Last week, the Pine Knot News published a letter that really ticked me off. It suggested that my son did not have strong ties to the Kettle River area. That is just not true. Dotseths have lived at his current Kettle River...
A lifetime of journeys has brought Keiko Satomi to her newest position as adult services librarian for the Cloquet Public Library. A beloved children's librarian here in recent years, Satomi got the adult services job in August. But there was a time when the native of Japan thought Cloquet residents might not accept her as a librarian. Fortunately, she was wrong. Satomi grew up on the core island of Japan in an area called the Shiga Prefecture, a populous state in the middle of the island... Full story
