  • Mini-golf set still missing, but origin revealed

    Oct 14, 2022

At least half of the mini golf mystery proffered in the Sept. 30 issue of the Pine Knot News has been solved - its origin story - but the mystery of where (and by whom) the historic mini golf set was taken remains unknown. Readers may recall that a Cloquet "landmark" mini golf set was set up for the West End Flourish event Sept. 24, after an employee of Lyn's Auto Body found it in a dumpster behind the U.S. Bank building a couple weeks before. The homemade set consisted of six mini golf holes,... Full story

  • FROM THE EDITOR: Out of many, one community paper

    Jana Peterson|Oct 14, 2022

When we started the Pine Knot News four years ago next week, people in the newspaper industry noticed. It was mostly shock — who was crazy enough to start a brand-new paper? — mixed in with hope. The Minneapolis Star Tribune sent a photographer and a reporter to our office in Cloquet. Minnesota Public Radio called, so did Business North and Fox 21 in Duluth. The industry’s Editor & Publisher magazine even wrote a short story with a photo. I can confidently say we weren’t delusional. After t... Full story

  • Guidelines: Political endorsement letters

    Oct 14, 2022

The Pine Knot News will accept candidate endorsement letters, with the following restrictions. The suggested word limit is 200 words, but we’ll accept up to 300 words for those who aren’t simply repeating themselves. If we receive multiple letters about a candidate saying the same thing, we won’t run all of them. We don’t charge for endorsement letters like many other papers, but expect our readers to understand that space is valuable. Endorsements must abide by the same rules as any other letter to the editor: in particular, reader comment... Full story

  • Undefeated Eskomos demolish competition

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 14, 2022

The Esko football team continued its impressive undefeated season last Friday with a 77-6 homecoming romp over Hibbing. The win improved the Eskomos record to 6-0. Esko head coach Scott Arntson praised the team's "relentless" defense. "Right now our defense is very stingy and they don't just get upset about teams scoring on us, but they get mad about giving up first downs - that is how high their expectations are," he said. Esko scored 28 points in each of the first and second quarters to build... Full story

  • Cloquet veteran fighting cancer honored

    Jana Peterson|Oct 7, 2022

The 2022 Cloquet homecoming celebration was a bittersweet moment for the Feehan family, which took center stage as they carried the king and queen's crowns across the football field. Having Noah Feehan, a 2002 CHS grad, honored as the grand marshal for the evening was wonderful. The reason behind the recognition - the fact that the veteran has been diagnosed with brain cancer likely caused by his military service - is the tough part. But Friday was a really good day. "It was so fun and the kids... Full story

  • 'Jacks stay head above rest

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 7, 2022

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton vs. Hermantown boys soccer game was played for more than bragging rights Saturday. The Lumberjacks entered the away game with an overall record of 10-2 and were leading the seeding race in Section 7AA. The Hawks were 9-4 and nipping at their heels. But CEC was able to grab an early lead and then hold off the Hawks for a 3-2 win. "The Hermantown win was big for us," said CEC head coach John Sundquist. "I don't know if it would have made a difference in the seedings, but... Full story

  • Police arrest suspect in home invasion case

    Oct 7, 2022

Cloquet detectives and officers arrested a 43-year-old Cloquet man Friday afternoon after an extensive investigation regarding a home invasion June 7 on Boulder Drive in Cloquet. According to a news release from the police department, during the June home invasion, a woman was awoken after an intruder entered the home and began strangling the woman as she slept. The victim's husband was alerted from another room and later had a brief confrontation with the suspect before he fled the home into the nearby woods. Law enforcement scoured the area... Full story

  • History mystery

    Sep 30, 2022

This week we highlight a mystery of both past and present: the Cloquet "landmark" mini golf set, which, sadly, disappeared after being used at the West End Flourish event Saturday. When was it built and by whom, and where is it now? Discovered by an employee of Lyn's Autobody in a dumpster behind the U.S. Bank building recently, the homemade set consisted of six mini golf holes, each adorned with a different Cloquet landmark, including the Frank Lloyd Wright gas station, Cloquet High School, the...

  • Separate Wrenshall forums lead to third chance to meet candidates

    Jana Peterson|Sep 30, 2022

Last week saw two different partial Wrenshall school board candidate forums, but residents may yet be able to attend a meeting with all seven candidates. After rejecting a Sept. 20 forum organized by the teachers union, three of the current board members - Jack Eudy, Deb Washenesky and Cindy Bourn - held their own candidate event Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Silver Brook town hall. Residents had plenty to say at the meeting, which started with a short introduction from each of the sponsoring... Full story

  • Editor's note: Election season brings rules, responsibilities

    Jana Peterson|Sep 30, 2022

With the election season ramping up, it’s time to lay a few ground rules. First up: endorsements. Defined as “the act of giving one’s public approval or support to someone or something,” candidate endorsements generally appear in newspapers in two ways: as letters from citizens endorsing candidates, or the newspaper itself announcing its opinion on the best person for the job. We at the Pine Knot accept one but choose to not practice the other. Endorsement letters are welcome, with limits.... Full story

  • West End flourishes, again

    Sep 30, 2022

Despite gray clouds and cooler temps, locals of all ages turned out to enjoy the second West End Flourish event on Saturday. There was a little bit of everything that day, with vendors, musicians and community organizations lining Avenue C to commune with the public, a car show on Avenue B and Vine Street, and kids' activities in Wentworth Park along with archery and mini golf in the city parking lot next door. Food trucks surrounded the VFW parking lot, and music filled the air. Cloquet's most... Full story

  • Festival comes to West End Saturday

    Sep 23, 2022

Head to the West End of Cloquet on Saturday for a free outdoor, pedestrian-friendly street festival featuring artists, entrepreneurs, shopping and an outdoor food court with live music. Aimed at giving residents a feel for what the historic West End used to be, the West End Flourish is also a reminder of what it could be in the future. That’s the goal, said Ivan Hohnstadt, Pine Knot News advertising manager and the orchestrator of Saturday’s second annual West End Flourish event. “We want people to see and enjoy the West End,” he said. Avenues... Full story

  • Wrenshall division escalates amid candidate forums

    Brady Slater|Sep 23, 2022

A teachers union-led candidate forum for Wrenshall school board had a kumbaya vibe Tuesday. But conflict currently affecting the board wasn't far behind, as three current board members declined to attend. Instead, they authored a mailer telling residents that teachers were behaving "improperly" by being involved in the election process. It didn't stop candidates Eric Ankrum, Mary Carlson, Kristin Reinsch and Ben Johnson from greeting roughly 70 teachers and members of the public. The hour-long...

  • Our view: Come celebrate the West End

    Sep 23, 2022

Driving around town, you’ll find remnants of long-forgotten commercial activity in many neighborhoods, corner groceries and old gas stations that have evolved into residential space, as most commercial activity moved downtown or to the Highway 33 corridor over the years. The West End of Cloquet is one of those sites. Once the thriving center of Cloquet, it held City Hall, the police station, and many of the most important businesses in town. The original town square was in the West End. So was the train station, and the town’s movie the... Full story

  • West End celebration imagines what could be

    Jana Peterson|Sep 16, 2022

The West End of Cloquet was the first part of town rebuilt after the Fires of 1918 and has the most historic buildings, but it's also the area with the most vacant storefronts. It's a relatively small area: spanning avenues B, C and D from Broadway Avenue to the other side of Arch Street. For the first 50 years or so of Cloquet's existence, the West End was the beating heart of the city, particularly in terms of government. City Hall and the jail were here, the Pine Knot newspaper and lots of...

  • Council passes max 6.5-percent tax increase

    Jana Peterson|Sep 9, 2022

Cloquet city councilors unanimously voted for a preliminary 2023 levy increase of 6.5 percent Tuesday, following advice of staff to build a little "wiggle room" into the budget. Ward 2 councilor Sheila Lamb made the motion, stressing that the goal was to lower the levy increase to 5.95 percent by the time the city budget and levy are formally adopted in December. City administrator Tim Peterson recommended the "wiggle room" and higher increase, noting that the council can choose to decrease the...

  • On the Mark: A teacher worth fighting for

    Ann Markusen|Sep 9, 2022

In the mid-1920s, my grandmother Ruth Lee Markusen began teaching at Cromwell High School. Although she had earned a degree from the University of Minnesota in English and social science (1910) and had taught grammar school in rural Minnesota for several years, she had most recently been a homemaker with two small boys at home. But her husband, Marinus "Renus" Markusen, had contracted tuberculosis and had to close down his planing mill and stop his carpentry work. So, she went to work teaching... Full story

  • Our view: Rededicate to the 'helping side of things'

    Sep 9, 2022

The Carlton County Labor Day celebration enjoyed its 105th gathering in Cloquet on Monday. The parade and surrounding events were widely and well-received, bringing our communities close in the name of being stronger together than apart - a core tenet of the labor movement. But if we want community celebrations like it to continue, we're going to need to listen to Chad Tuura. "I don't want it to go away," Tuura said. "I don't want to lose it. I don't want Labor Day not to happen." Tuura was the...

  • Politics to star on Labor Day

    Jana Peterson|Sep 2, 2022

With only a few days left until Labor Day, Central Labor Body president Chad Tuura is bouncing between excitement over what he’s predicting will be a large parade and worry, because this important local event basically rests on his shoulders. He was giddy Tuesday night, after learning that Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon had agreed to be grand marshal in Monday’s parade, and after hearing from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party that Cloquet would likely see some “major polit... Full story
