  • Events planned to mark Memorial Day

    Pine Knot News|May 27, 2022

And suddenly, it’s Memorial Day. The unofficial start to summer. A weekend of remembering those who are gone. Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day was originally set aside to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and decorating graves, holding family gatherings and participating in parades and other ceremonies. Local honor guard members and other veterans groups treat Memorial Day — and the...

  • Knot Pining: Finding old trophy is a real prize

    Mike Creger|May 27, 2022

In the "clichés are clichés because they are true" department, I offer one here: Newspapers record the first draft of history. For me, there is nothing like going back into newspaper archives and reading first accounts of events, historic and not so historic. It's a passion of mine in downtime, rabbit holes to get lost in. And so it was recently when I went about following up on a reader query about where in the world was the trophy for the 1963 Cloquet basketball team that finished second in th...

  • District to move, merge its childcare

    Jana Peterson|Apr 29, 2022

It's a task that's loomed large since Erin Bates took over as Cloquet Community Education director almost 18 months ago: find a new home for Li'l Lumberjacks Learning Center. Mission accomplished. In September, Li'l Lumberjacks and the entire Kids Corner program will move into a new facility at Pine Tree Plaza - most recently a furniture store - after extensive renovations inside. "We needed to relocate Li'l Lumberjacks, it was either that or potentially close the program," Cloquet...

  • When basketball was king ... almost 60 years ago

    Steve Korby|Apr 22, 2022

It was a love affair. It's the only way to describe how people from Cloquet and the surrounding communities embraced the 1963 Cloquet High School boys basketball team. Basketball was king in Minnesota and especially the region then. It was before the hockey barn was built, Pine Valley was a relatively new ski facility, there wasn't girls' sports, there were no cellphones or ESPN, so it meant there were a lot of people going to local gyms on Friday and Tuesday evenings to get a sports rush. Cloqu...

  • CEC Hockey fees won't be raised

    Jana Peterson|Apr 15, 2022

After Cloquet school board members seemed to indicate in March they were OK with the idea of increasing player fees for hockey, four of five board members present voted against the proposal Monday. Hockey players already pay the highest school activity fee. On the other hand, the cost of the high school program is far less than families pay for youth hockey as their children get older, superintendent Michael Cary had pointed out in March. According to the Cloquet Amateur Hockey Association website, the top fee for Bantam players (ages 13-14)...

  • Hockey fees could rise as budget boost

    Jana Peterson|Mar 25, 2022

Fees for playing on the Lumberjacks varsity and junior varsity hockey teams may increase in the future, as part of an effort by the Cloquet school district to decrease the burden on the overall budget. During the Cloquet school board work session Monday, March 21, board members and administration discussed the expensive lease agreement with the city for use of Northwoods Credit Union Arena for hockey games and practices. Superintendent Michael Cary told the board that player fees for the...

  • Korby's Connections: Memorial spurs a host of memories

    Steve Korby|Mar 25, 2022

At Cloquet coach Rol Bromberg's recent visitation at Nelson Funeral Care, I was astounded by the preeminent collection of athletic and family photos on display. Undefeated football teams, track regional relay champs, Brom and his wife at Twins games, hugs with grandkids, birthdays, his own high school and college awards, the dedication of Bromberg Field. One particular picture brought a twinkle to my eye: a photo of Bromberg and Dickie Eklund out on the Athletic Park football field, dated 1979....

  • Cloquet's Ripp rips it up at nationals

    Jana Peterson|Mar 25, 2022

Cloquet's Aidan Ripp and his teammates from Paul Smith's College skied their way to a national championship earlier this month. It's been a good season for the Class of 2019 Cloquet High School grad, who also competed in the 2022 U.S. Olympic Trials in Nordic combined in December and a Continental Cup race in China before that. Ripp said they weren't sure how things would go in the 2022 U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard National Championships, since Covid canceled most of the big competitions...

  • Ski talk: First-timer versus Kortelopet

    Tom Urbanski|Mar 4, 2022

Last Friday, Cloquet's Kate Meisner completed her first Kortelopet, the 29-kilometer Nordic ski race that is part of the American Birkebeiner's Birkie Week events. It's a challenging endurance event that requires training, planning, perseverance, skiing skills, and dealing with a lot of other skiers on the trail ... almost 3,000 last Friday. Meisner posted a solid and satisfying debut, finishing in three hours and seven minutes in the 29K classic race. Starting in Wave 4 this year, her finish...

  • Council wards, polling places won't change in 2022

    Pine Knot News staff|Mar 4, 2022

When the 2020 Census showed an increase of 444 residents in Cloquet, city officials took a look at their own version of redistricting and decided to keep things the way they were. City administrator Tim Peterson explained to the council members during Tuesday’s meeting that unlike U.S. House District 8 — which is expanding west to include the White Earth and Red Lake nations — Cloquet saw only small changes to the population numbers in the city’s five council wards. Current population numbers and percentage of average population are listed...

  • Our View: Unique park needs snowmaking

    Pine Knot News|Feb 25, 2022

While it may seem that Cloquet need never worry about adequate snow after the storm earlier this week, we can all recall times when the golf courses still showed green in November and even into December … when cross country ski season kicks off. So, before the city of Cloquet progresses any further with its master plan for the city’s Pine Valley park, we’d like to ask elected officials to consider elevating the need for snowmaking equipment from near the bottom of the list to somewhere after fixing the jumps and before creating a pavil...

  • Pine Valley, where Olympic hopes grow

    Pine Knot News staff|Feb 18, 2022

In Cloquet, it isn't farfetched to have Olympic dreams. After all, Olympic Drive snakes around the land Joe Nowak convinced Northwest Paper to donate for a park, now home to ice arenas and a woodland park. Corey Millen and Jamie Langenbrunner played in the arenas when they were Lumberjacks. Millen was the first Cloquet hockey player to reach the Olympics, playing on the 1988 team. Langenbrunner played in the era when NHL players began competing. He was a last-second replacement on the 1998...

  • Lumberjacks have eyes on section

    Tom Urbanski|Feb 4, 2022

With the season-ending championship events just around the corner in mid-February, the Lumberjacks Nordic ski teams got a good look at where they stand during the Duluth East Invitational held at Snowflake Nordic Center Friday. Ten of the 11 teams in Section 7 were competing, creating a showcase of the Nordic skiing talent in northeastern Minnesota. The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton varsity boys team finished fifth overall out of 10 teams, landing behind meet hosts and winners Duluth East, followed by...

  • 5 CEC skiers earn All-Conference honors

    Tom Urbanski|Feb 4, 2022

Essentially a race-within-a-race, the Lake Superior Conference Nordic Ski Team champions and All-Conference individuals were named using the results from last Friday’s Duluth East Invitational races. While 10 teams competed in the event, a second set of results were tabulated using just the Lake Superior Conference teams to produce the team winners and individual honors. The CEC Nordic Ski Teams had three boys and two girls earn all-conference honors. The top 10 finishers in the pursuit format race make the annual all-conference team. With Mile...

  • Ski jumping, racing take over park

    Timothy Soden-Groves|Jan 21, 2022

Saturday dawned cold and clear with just a light wind puffing some fresh snow out of the trees at Pine Valley in Cloquet. Mid-January turned out to be a perfect time for ski jumping. By the time the youngest ski jumpers slid down the inrun on the 5-meter hill just after noon, the sun was relatively blazing, it was a balmy 12 degrees and the annual Cloquet Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Invitational was on. With more than 40 young competitors putting on their bibs to jump - and another 60 or so...

  • Youngest Ripp sets her sights on world competition

    Jana Peterson|Jan 14, 2022

Aidan Ripp wasn't the only Cloquet athlete competing at Lake Placid last month - his younger sister, Charlotte, was hot on his heels. Charlotte, a Cloquet High School junior, and her older brother both compete in the sport of Nordic combined, which includes both ski jumping and Nordic (aka cross country) skiing. Last month Aidan took 12th in the Olympic Trials (but only first place qualified for the Beijing Olympics next month) and Charlotte placed third at the Lake Placid U.S. Cup competition....

  • On The Mark: Ski programs grow strong at Cloquet's Pine Valley

    Ann Markusen|Jan 14, 2022

It was a cold, cold day - even at 1 p.m. - minus 8 degrees with modest winds. The chalet at Pine Valley was crowded with kids and parents. The Cloquet Ski Club's Jenny Barta ably led us through the outdoor practices to come, ensuring skis needing wax had received it. Based on parents' prior feedback, she divided us into groups with two volunteer adults leading five to seven kids each. Some parents joined in too. No one seemed to mind the cold: the snow apparel was impressive and appropriate....

  • Skiers set sights under the lights

    Jana Peterson|Jan 7, 2022

Nordic skiers from six schools descended on Cloquet for a rare evening ski meet Tuesday, held on the lighted trail loop at Pine Valley. While skiers sped off into the darkness like clockwork every 30 seconds for nearly three hours - spanning boys and girls varsity, junior varsity and junior high races - volunteers kept things ticking. Inside the chalet they served warm food, organized racing bibs and kept the wax room running. Outside, even more volunteers timed the race from start to finish,...

  • Year In Review: Pandemic continued its impact in 2021

    Pine Knot News|Jan 7, 2022

After a rough, Covid-19- pandemic-ridden 2020, the year 2021 was destined to be better, right? Well, the jury hasn’t reached a decision yet. There were highs and lows, as the pandemic continued to alter life as we knew it before 2020. There’s a vaccine, which has helped ease the naked fear of contracting the virus. There has been mostly in-person learning this school year and many of the events around schools are back to normal. Cities held modified annual celebrations. But Covid spikes continue, with infections breaking records even now, so...

  • Ski Meet Assist

    Pine Knot News|Jan 7, 2022

Ask Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Nordic skiing head coach Arne Maijala about the hometown ski meet this week and the conversation will be as much about all the people who help make it happen as much as the skiers who participate. Nordic skiers from six schools descended on Cloquet for a rare evening ski meet Tuesday, held on the lighted trail loop at Pine Valley. Volunteers include parents of past skiers, former coaches, former Cloquet skiers and a handful of folks who just want to support Nordic...

  • Cloquet grad hits Olympic trials

    Jana Peterson|Dec 31, 2021

Cloquet's Aidan Ripp squeaked into the Olympic Trials last week, took 12th place competing against the top Nordic combined athletes in the U.S., and feels pretty good about it. "The goal for me was to get there," Ripp told the Pine Knot this week about Friday's competition at Lake Placid, New York. "It was a fun time with no real pressure. Not to be un-optimistic, but to get to the Olympics I would have had to win everything, beat all the top athletes. It was kind of out of my wheelhouse."...

Ripp, a sophomore at Paul Smith's College in New York's Adirondack State Park, qualified at the Continental Cup event in Beijing, China, Dec. 4-5. It gave him enough points to compete in the trials in Nordic combined, which combines ski jumping with Nordic skiing. Ripp learned to jump at Cloquet's Pine Valley....
