A public hearing regarding the 14th Street improvement project got only one public comment during Tuesday's Cloquet City Council meeting, despite the fact that some residents don't like county plans for a roundabout at the intersection of Washington Avenue and 14th Street. Those folks were in the minority, said SEH project engineer Dan Hinzmann during a presentation Tuesday. Because the project uses state aid funding, he said the state would have required an intersection improvement there over...
Coming off a win in Hermantown a week earlier, the Cloquet boys cross country team came in atop a three-team triangular meet at their home course in Cloquet Thursday afternoon. Junior Harmony Tracy won the girls meet for the Lumberjacks, but as a team the girls couldn't quite catch the speedy Duluth East Greyhounds. The Lumberjacks boys saw another strong finish, placing five runners in the top 10 Thursday afternoon. Cloquet finished with a team total of 23 points, while the Greyhounds were...
Cloquet's Lyn Jutila is currently exhibiting her watercolors at the Pine Knot office. She recently sat down with us to talk about her work and how she became a watercolorist after hanging her paintings on the multi-colored brick wall that is The Knot art gallery. "I moved here from California. I'd always enjoyed painting on boards, on driftwood. I began painting in oils, but enjoyed viewing watercolors and dabbling with them, taking classes now and then." A stay-at-home mom, her children...
There was a lot of the expected mixed with a little of the unexpected last Thursday as Esko, Carlton/Wrenshall and Cromwell-Wright hooked up in a cross country race at Pine Valley in Cloquet. The Cardinals had the top two individual finishers in both the boys and girls varsity races and the Eskomos took first place as a team followed by the Raptors in the boys meet. The girls race saw Carlton/Wrenshall nab team honors with Esko taking second. Cromwell-Wright did not have the required five...
The Esko boys and girls cross country teams have been notorious for being perennial contenders in the sectional meet. After a challenging time last year, things look to be on the upswing for the Eskomos this season. “Last year was a good year, overall, and a good indicator of positive things to look forward to,” said coach Jeremy Hallsten, who is in his eighth year as head coach. “After having lost key contributors to both our running teams two years ago, we had a bit of a rebuilding year last...
Don't look now, but the Cromwell-Wright Cards could be on the verge of something special this cross country season. A year ago the Cards sent two athletes to the state meet and this year it could be even more. "We had a great season with the largest team we have ever had and the most seniors ever," said the excited Cards coach Pete Koenig, explaining that the team graduated seven seniors total. "The boys team had many second-place team finishes, outstanding for such a small school." "On the...
The Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors cross country girls and boys teams are hoping No. 3 will be a charm. After forming a cooperative team in 2018, last season was the second year in a row the Raptors had enough runners to compete as a team instead of just individuals. Head coach Eric Holter is seeing the results this year. "Last year we had some forward movement with both the boys and girls teams showing up strong and placing respectably amongst the competition," he said. "This was the second year...
For decades, Cloquet kids played hockey outside in the elements, until volunteers and local businesses came together to build the Pine Valley Ice Arena aka the Barn, in the late 1960s and gave the city its first indoor rink. Now a growing group of volunteers and donors is bringing a quality outdoor rink to the Barn grounds, to give kids more space to play and practice the sport they love. Members of the Cloquet Area Hockey Association - many of them parent volunteers - tore down the old boards...
There were more volunteers and media than racers at Saturday's Pine Valley Bike and Run event, but that's OK, said organizer Tim Krohn. The five bike racers didn't care either, nor did the two runners. It's all about building awareness of the new bike trails and other opportunities at the Cloquet park. "The more publicity this park gets, the more it will grow," said biker Brendon Menze. Cloquet's Tom Anderson is a regular winner of Krohn's Frozen Forester series of races, which often cut cross...
The summer of COVID-19. In northern Minnesota, pandemic responses have canceled most local festivals (but not Wrong Days in Wright, and only part of Carlton Daze) and many of the sports leagues that occupy so much time in the summer. Concerts? Largely on hold for now, even outdoors. County fairs are mostly on hiatus as well. But they can't cancel the great outdoors, and that is where many people have fled in the wake of coronavirus. We've seen them walking around town, or taking up different...
Cloquet’s first and perhaps only summer race event will kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 18, when the Frozen Forester Pine Valley Bike and Run begins. Think mountain bikes, not road bikes, and come prepared to deal with the great outdoors in Cloquet’s woodland park whether you’re running or biking, or both. Competitors can choose from four races, including an 18.8K bike-and-run duathlon, a bike-only 13.3K race, a 5.5K run-only and a 1.2K Family Run. Event director Tim Krohn said he feels he ca...
While the Duluth City Council will vote on a proposal Monday to require people to wear masks in public spaces and gatherings, the Cloquet City Council isn’t quite ready to take that step. Mayor Roger Maki broached the idea during a council discussion of ongoing pandemic measures by the city to limit the spread of COVID-19. Maki pointed out that it’s a popular discussion point right now, with cities like Rochester, Mankato and Edina implementing requirements for face coverings recently. Additiona...
A bicycle accident at Pine Valley Park around 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning left a 25-year-old Cloquet woman with her leg impaled on a branch stub of a decaying tree. While it sounds horrific, she is OK and left a hospital in good shape Monday. "Nothing was broken and there's no nerve damage," said Morgan Warbalow Wednesday. "I got pretty lucky." Warbalow said she was biking on a narrow part of the mountain bike trail with a client from the foster group home where she works when the accident...
Zebulon Wehr is going pro. The 2020 Cloquet High School graduate known for his prowess on mountain biking paths will try to qualify this month for a professional circuit. His first qualifying race, scheduled for July 12, was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. His next race is still on, set for July 26, when he will try to place high enough and be eligible for pro races. "I would have to place in the top five, like a qualifier, to be considered a pro," Wehr said. "The judges look at the am...

Not every sports event has been canceled. At 9 a.m. Saturday, July 18, the Frozen Forester Pine Valley Bike and Run is still on at Pine Valley Recreation Area in Cloquet. The event is a fundraiser to help extend the single-track bike trail to 5 miles. The bike-and-run duathlon is 18.8K, the bike-only is 13.3K, the run-only is 5.5K, while the Family Run is 1.2K, said event director Tim Krohn. As it is a small event, Krohn said he feels they can run it safely despite the fact that the coronavirus...
The dehumidification system in the city’s Northwoods hockey arena — considered too small for the facility for years — is finally being replaced. Cloquet city councilors unanimously approved a bid for $275,080 to replace the existing dehumidification system with an appropriately sized unit this summer, paid for with funds from the half-cent sales tax. The bid came in almost $75,000 below the engineer’s estimate. The council did not approve a second bid to construct stairs and safety rails t...
It must have seemed like Christmas to the youth hockey players Monday when Northwoods Credit Union Arena opened on a limited basis for hockey camp. "I am having a great day because I am looking out my office window and seeing kids skating again," said Cloquet Area Hockey Association director Justin Harriman, who also acts as facilities manager for both the Northwoods and Pine Valley ice arenas. "We opened with precautions from a social distancing aspect." With the closing of the locker rooms as...
Eleanor C. Thomsen, 94, of Cloquet passed away May 18, 2020, at Augustana Care in Moose Lake. She was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of Walter and Florence (Troyer) Garske. Eleanor worked as a subcontractor administrator for Rockwell International and Boeing. She lived in California's San Fernando Valley from 1955 to 1961 and again from 1976 to 1988. She lived in Sarasota, Florida from 1973 through 1976. Eleanor worked as a secretary at Firestone Tire and Rubber, the...
Barbara Ann Cloud Little was born in Washington, D.C. in 1934, the second of four children born to Etienne L. and Dorothy Ball Cloud. She entered into the next realm on May 4, 2020, after living with metastatic breast cancer for several years, during which time she continued to manifest her usual grace. She did not lose this battle. Instead, she has passed the baton on to her family and friends to make this world a better place for others. Barbara was loved by many. Her giving and nurturing...
Neighbors’ voices beat out public safety officials and educators in the debate on whether or not to include a sidewalk in the upcoming Prospect Avenue street reconstruction project, as Cloquet city councilors voted 5-2 Tuesday to reject the sidewalk bid. Councilors Bun Carlson, Sheila Lamb, Kerry Kolodge, Steve Langley and Mayor Roger Maki voted against the sidewalk while councilors Chris Swanson and Lara Wilkinson were the two “nay” votes. The vote in favor of the street project itself was u...
With the temperature climbing into the 40s Saturday, the conditions weren't exactly perfect for the annual City Ski Meet at Cloquet's Pine Valley. Too much snow had already melted to use the 40-meter ski jump, so the jumping competiton began with the 20-meter jump ... before it melted too. Lots of younger children braved the 10-meter jump, and some very tiny ones blipped over the 5-meter, which is basically a small bump in the side of the hill behind the chalet. The day wrapped with Nordic ski r...
The annual Cloquet City meet is set for Saturday, March 7 at Cloquet’s Pine Valley park. The event, sponsored by the Cloquet Ski Club, features ski jumping and Nordic ski races for all ages. As of Wednesday, the event was still a go despite warmer temperatures this week, according to ski club member David Marc. The registration flyer can be completed at the Pine Valley chalet on Friday 6-8 p.m. (when there is jumping practice) or Saturday morning 9-11 a.m. Marc posted on Facebook that the 4...
Not everyone is welcome at every library, apparently. Surprised? I was. I love to read. In fact, if I could sequester myself in the library and have no other responsibilities, I would try to read everything in the place. I particularly love magazines, newspapers, and other periodicals. I probably got this trait from my mother, who read 3-4 books a week until her eyes no longer worked, or maybe my brother, Bill, who not only reads everything — he remembers most of it, too. I ask my kids all the time: Who is the smartest person they know? The a...
Although there are some of us who'd love to keep Pine Valley our own little secret, it's too much of a good thing not to willingly share with the world. Which is why we applaud efforts by Tim Krohn, the city of Cloquet and others, to seek regional designation for Pine Valley with the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission. Such a designation would only make the park better, with access to more funding and hopefully better signage so folks from out of town can find their way to Cl...
