He gave himself a year, spending part of the summer and early fall jumping and skiing on plastic in Europe and places such as Utah and Colorado. Since the snow arrived, he's been across the States practicing and competing in his chosen sport. It paid off. Earlier this month, USA Nordic named Ripp as a member of the 2020...

  • Nordic: Lumberjacks feel the love at state

    Jana Peterson|Feb 21, 2020

At a fiercely competitive Minnesota State Nordic ski meet Friday, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys Nordic team skied their way to eighth place out of 18 teams ... with each team member skiing his hardest for team and self. While only the top four finishers for each team contribute to the team score, the other three skiers ski to displace competing skiers so they don't earn as many points. As he has all season, Cloquet junior Benjamin Bauer led the team individually, taking 23rd place following...

  • State bound! After 30 years, the CEC boys are going back to State

    Jana Peterson|Feb 14, 2020

For the first time in almost three decades, the Lumberjacks boys Nordic ski team is headed to State. With almost perfect conditions - the snow just right, and temperatures in the low 20s - four Lumberjacks skiers finished in the top 15 at Thursday's Section 7 meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. Benjamin Bauer finished in third place, while Josh Sanders took ninth, AJ Maijala 12th and Cale Prosen finished in 14th place. The combined scores of CEC's top four skiers added up to 366 points, good enough...

  • Cloquet's trailblazing hockey coach dies

    Kerry Rodd|Jan 31, 2020

Word began to filter out early Monday morning that the godfather of Cloquet hockey, former boys hockey coach Bill Kennedy, had passed away Sunday at the age of 85 at his home in Mahtowa. The tough-as-nails Kennedy coached the Lumberjacks from 1967 to 1987 after taking over for Don Bourdeau. Kennedy was instrumental in putting the program on the map. He was also a favorite teacher to thousands of students who met up with him in his classroom during his four decades of teaching. Bruce Plante, who...

  • Water plant hums along

    Jana Peterson|Jan 24, 2020

With little fanfare, Cloquet's new water treatment plant came online in December and so far things are going swimmingly. Residents should notice little change in tap water because the plant is filtering a mineral that hasn't been present in recent years, after the city quit using one of its five wells. Now that well - which previously provided 30 percent of the city's water - is back in action, but with no added manganese because of the city's new $6.6 million facility. Manganese occurs...

  • New year ... new healthy you

    Holly Henry|Jan 17, 2020

It's a new year and once again you've resolved to get healthy. And you're certainly not alone. According to the website Body Blueprint, the No. 1 New Year's resolution is to lose weight. Every year millions of people make such resolutions, followed by a grab-bag of others, from quitting smoking, to drinking less alcohol, to exercising more, to cutting out sugar. Unfortunately, Body Blueprint also notes that a staggering 80 percent of all these well-intentioned aspirations are broken by the...

  • Where ski lessons are life lessons

    Tyler Harms-Synkiew|Jan 10, 2020

Not too long after he could walk, at age 2, Cale Prosen began skiing. He started with the Cloquet Ski Club, under the tutelage of coaches Ken Ripp and Pat Marciniak, along with parent volunteers. "I remember playing a lot of games and having fun," Prosen said. "It was always fun being on the trails. Now a sophomore at Cloquet High School and on the varsity Nordic ski team, Prosen said his love for skiing has not faded. "It's a fun sport," Prosen said. "And having a positive team culture...

  • Skating tradition holds in Cloquet

    Jana Peterson|Dec 27, 2019

It was all in good fun as a friendly game of hockey ebbed and flowed at the Pinehurst Park hockey rink Sunday night. Everyone just kind of showed up, said Travis Berg, who was only watching Sunday due to a concussion from playing high school hockey. The informal pickup game included several past and present Lumberjacks hockey players. The boys soccer team was also well represented. It was, after all, a pickup game - just like Minnesotans have always played for generations with sticks, pucks,...

  • Cloquet tubing hill closed for good

    Pine Knot News|Dec 27, 2019

As noted in the most recent issue of the Lumberlog by Cloquet Community Education, the Cloquet parks commission voted earlier this year to close the hills at Pine Valley to tubing “due to safety considerations and an aging tow rope system.” Pine Valley will continue to be home base for Cloquet kids’ ski jumping and Nordic skiing, as well as the CEC Nordic ski team. If you love tubing, visit Mont du Lac Resort’s brand-new Outta Bounds tubing park, which includes four speed lanes, two children’s lanes, and two custom lanes that careen through t...

  • CEC takes advantage of home tracks

    Jana Peterson|Dec 27, 2019

There's no place like home. Dorothy said it first, but the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys Nordic team proved it by placing five boys in the top 10 during the varsity race Thursday as the Lumberjacks hosted their only home meet of the season. The race start area at Pine Valley was a field of white awash in activity for hours Thursday, Dec. 19. More than 360 skiers in grades 7-12 warmed up, raced, cheered each other on and then enjoyed homemade goodies in the ski chalet at the woodland park. CEC head...

  • Jumping right in

    Jana Peterson|Dec 20, 2019

Ski jumpers and Nordic combined racers from Chicago, the Twin Cities, Coleraine and Ishpeming, Michigan made their way here Saturday to compete in the first Central Division competition of the season at Cloquet's Pine Valley. Out-of-town jumpers were astounded by the amount of snow in northern Minnesota. St. Paul's Joe Berens was the official Central Division coach on site Saturday, and called the conditions "wonderful." More than 2 feet of snow was certainly a good thing for jumping, as the...

  • City plans methodical arena fixes until money for major overhaul

    Jana Peterson|Dec 20, 2019

One step at a time. That's the approach one consulting firm is recommending for repairs and renovations to the city's ice arenas, in particular The Barn. After spending close to $50,000 in October to replace the R-22 refrigerant that had leaked out of the aging pipes and ice plant at the more-than-40-year-old facility, determining options for fixing and replacing the cooling systems at both facilities has become a priority for the city. It's more complicated than systems simply getting old....

  • First Nordic race of the season comes with surprises for CEC

    Jana Peterson|Dec 13, 2019

The first Nordic race of the season Tuesday came with a couple surprises for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton team. 1.There's plenty of snow already. 2.The girl's fastest skier Tuesday was Halle Zuck, an Esko sophomore who was skiing junior varsity at the Snowflake Nordic Center in Duluth. Head coach Arne Maijala said he wasn't surprised to see Zuck turn in a fast time, but he didn't expect her to be THE top girls skier. Halle Zuck finished her JV race - a 4K race, just like the varsity - in 23:05.5,...

  • With help, a legacy of land is created along the Nemadji

    Kim Samuelson|Nov 29, 2019

Most people want to leave a legacy, to know that their lives mattered, to leave their mark on the world, a contribution of some sort to future generations. But many don’t consciously think about what they want their legacy to be or how to build it. They also don’t realize that they aren’t alone, that they can involve others in creating their legacy. Warren Tester has done that. Tester is being honored as Carlton County’s 2019 Outstanding Conservationist for his work on what he calls his “strategic” property in the Nemadji watershed....

Peterson, the current city administrator in Moose Lake and previously deputy clerk in Proctor, displayed a good understanding of both the issues and strengths of Cloquet, in a question and answer session with councilors that went both ways. Peterson asked councilors what they see as priority projects for the city. Answers ranged...
