  • Brickyard turned 30

    Anne Dugan|Jun 26, 2020

This week Don Johnson wrote in with a reminder of a very important Wrenshall anniversary. Here is the story: "It turns out that the 12th of June is the 30-year anniversary of the Brickyard Restaurant. So I thought I would give you some history of how it came into being." Johnson says there were three men who were part of the Wrenshall Development Corporation. They were Hugh Line, head janitor at the school who served several terms as mayor of Wrenshall; Ken Holmes, a farmer and then later a bus...

  • School budgets offer tale of two districts

    Mike Creger|Jun 19, 2020

The two districts attempting to pull off a consolidation in the next year showed strikingly different anticipated budgets for the next year. The Carlton and Wrenshall school boards met in regular monthly sessions Monday night via online platforms. Carlton continues to bleed money. Board members passed a budget showing that revenues in the 2020-2021 school year won’t keep up with expenses by about $457,000. It’s a continuing pattern for the district that is slowly eating away at its budget reserves as enrollment continues to dwindle. Out...

  • Wrenshall news: Let the sun breathe in

    Anne Dugan|Jun 19, 2020

The first week of June we brought the last of the rutabagas from our root cellar to the Whole Foods Co-op in Duluth. The following week we started the first summer deliveries to our Food Share members. There are a lot of things that power the farm and allow us to provide local organic produce to our community year-round, but arguably one of the most obvious and most important is the sun. We’ve been seeing a lot of the sun these days and, while we could definitely use some rain to balance it all...

  • Carlton picks short-term superintendent

    Mike Creger|Jun 12, 2020

The Carlton school board has chosen its next superintendent to replace Gwen Carman, who is leaving for a job in southeastern Minnesota. John Engstrom said the Carlton job appealed to him because it's a one-year stint and not too far from where he is living, southwest of Minneapolis near Lake Minnetonka. The school board officially hired Engstrom during an online meeting Monday. The district will pay Engstrom $108,243 on a one-year contract that begins July 1. Engstrom's last job was at Friess...

  • Wrenshall News: Parade inspires a 'snivel' moment

    Anne Dugan|Jun 5, 2020

My maternal grandmother, Mildred Schulenburg, was born in Hull in northeastern England in 1910. During World War I, her hometown was a common target for Zeppelin airships, and she recounted stories of watching neighbors perish in the attacks. When she was 18 her family immigrated to the United States. In October of that year the United States was plunged into the Great Depression. When she was 80 years old she built a new house for herself, and we have a snapshot of her hanging on a kudzu vine....

  • Budget is rosy for consolidated schools

    Mike Creger|May 29, 2020

School board members got a glimpse this month of what a budget for a Carlton and Wrenshall consolidated district might look like. Some rough data project a significant fund balance increase for school operations in a consolidation. With current enrollment staying intact, savings in administrative salary costs would drive a $786,200 balance of revenues over expenditures. Representatives from Arrowhead Regional Computing Consortium presented the numbers during a joint meeting of the district school boards online last week. ARCC’s Jennifer S...

  • Schools take ceremonies to new level

    Kerry Rodd|May 29, 2020

One thing is certain: the Class of 2020 will have lots of stories to tell future generations about their final school days. Last Friday marked the beginning of the high school graduation season with three ceremonies - for Carlton, Cromwell-Wright and Cloquet graduates - each one organized differently but taking into account the COVID-19 pandemic and state guidelines to avoid large gatherings and maintain social distancing. In Cloquet it was a true drive-in movie experience. Cars started lining...

  • County stung by stalemate at capitol

    Mike Creger|May 22, 2020

When the Minnesota Legislature ended earlier this week without passing major bonding and tax bills, those waiting for funding word in Carlton County had to feel the sting. The failure to meet the deadline, and the push into a likely special session in mid-June, has ramifications from water lines to school consolidation to the county jail funding prospects. Remaining in limbo is the measure that would have brought millions into the Carlton-Wrenshall school consolidation plan. A planned August referendum, asking residents for money to pay for the...

  • Wrenshall News: Grad says 'it's the people' (updated)

    Anne Dugan|May 22, 2020

Wrenshall graduation begins at 4 p.m. May 29. To provide for social distancing, the ceremony will be outside in front of school, similar to a drive-in movie theater experience. Since a limited numbers of cars are allowed to park and watch, the ceremony will also be broadcast on WKLK 96.5 FM and streamed live on Facebook. I spoke to a member of Wrenshall's graduating class, Alexis Schmidt, about the unique end to her senior year. While she certainly feels disappointed by the cancellation of prom...

  • Consolidation plan headed to state

    Mike Creger|May 15, 2020

The school boards from Carlton and Wrenshall earlier this week approved in separate online meetings a consolidation plan to be sent to the Minnesota Department of Education. It’s a formal step in a process with many parts as the districts edge closer to pairing up and forming an elementary school in Carlton and a middle and high school in Wrenshall. The plan sent to the state describes how a combined district would spend $39.7 million to shore up the schools and grounds in each city to accommodate the influx of students in a consolidation. The...

  • UPDATED: Grads gear up for drive-up ceremonies

    Mike Creger|May 15, 2020

The Cloquet school district made graduation ceremony plans before Minnesota Department of Health officials joined state education commissioners last week to announce guidelines for schools honoring senior classes. In short, schools, colleges and universities are being asked to host virtual graduation ceremonies people can watch from home. But many schools are attempting to do more than that by offering a more participatory approach for seniors. Cloquet's plans for a drive-in-style movie of...

  • Wrenshall News: Add some zing, not sting, to your greens arsenal

    Anne Dugan|May 15, 2020

The scientific name for a weed I am seeing a lot around the farm this spring is urtica dioica, which sounds like something a doctor might tell you if your urinary tract infection has taken a turn for the worse. I much prefer the common name: nettles. The two t’s in the middle of the word look like the tiny spines on the stem of the plant itself. This is where the hollow hairs called trichomes reside. They act like hypodermic needles, injecting chemicals like histamines into flesh to produce a st...

  • Highway 23 bridge projects begun

    Pine Knot News|May 8, 2020

Two bridge projects on Highway 23 in Carlton County south of Wrenshall began this week and are expected to run until October. The road will not be closed, but single-lane bypasses will be used. The bridge over Deer Creek, south of Pleasant Valley, will be removed and replaced, and the creek area restored. The bridge over the Nemadji River will also be removed and replaced with river work done. Minnesota Department of Transportation road work has been identified as a critical service in Gov. Tim Walz’s Stay at Home executive order. MnDOT r...

  • Boards fine-tune school site plans

    Mike Creger|May 8, 2020

A joint committee made up of school board members from Carlton and Wrenshall districts is chipping away at site plans for a consolidated district. The boards have to submit a plan to the Minnesota Department of Education next week on what it will be asking voters for in a planned referendum in August. But that hinges on the current state legislature passing a measure in its bonding bill allocating money to schools seeking consolidation — and the legislature needs to finish its work by May 18. The joint facilities commission decided late last m...

  • Take advantage of many local farm food options

    Pine Knot News|May 8, 2020

Our new normal during the coronavirus pandemic has made many appreciate the ease of access to basic needs here in our local communities. All of the local grocery stores have been relatively well-stocked, thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of essential workers. The news surrounding the agriculture economy during the pandemic has not been much different from that of other industries. Meat processing plants are being shut down due to virus outbreaks in the workforce, and dairy co-ops are being...
