  • Consolidation survey: A resounding 'yes'

    Mike Creger|Feb 14, 2020

Sue Peterson had some choice words about the survey results released this week regarding how residents feel about the possible consolidation of the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts. “Atypical.” “Shocking.” “Surprising.” Peterson works for School Perceptions, the company hired by the school districts to guide the survey. The school boards wanted a clear idea of where residents stood on consolidation and the costs to accomplish it. They want it. And they seem willing to pay for it as well....

  • House fires displace county residents

    Mike Creger|Feb 7, 2020

Mike Creger and Jana Peterson Fires this past week have displaced at least seven people in north Carlton County. A family of four in the lower unit of a duplex on the 100 block of 13th Street in Cloquet had to move to a hotel this week after a suspected electrical fire set a couch on fire early Saturday evening. The fire spread and there was heavy smoke damage. A woman who lived in the upper duplex was also forced to find housing and is living with family members. Everyone evacuated safely. Earl...

  • Our View: Carlton, Wrenshall can't rest on survey

    Pine Knot News|Feb 7, 2020

By this time next week, residents in the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts should have a pretty good idea on where their neighbors stand on the issue of consolidating the districts. The schools boards for each will meet jointly in a special 6 p.m. meeting Tuesday at South Terrace to discuss the most recent survey of stakeholders. Early indications are that there was a high return on the surveys. The group that is working with the districts says any return rate above 18 percent is good. Let’s hope we have a far higher response. This is t...

  • Letters to the editor: Consolidation should be affordable option

    Pine Knot News|Feb 7, 2020

I am for consolidation. But don’t three (Wrenshall) plus one (Carlton) failed referendums tell us something? Maybe asking for the moon is too much for the taxpayers to bear. The Wrenshall School Board has voted for a $9.3 million non-voter approved levy and now wants an additional $29 million if we consolidate. Here’s my idea: The two boards vote to consolidate upon voter approval; then get together, brainstorm, ask the public to participate. Surely there are people who have an area of expertise that will be helpful. Then sharpen your pen...

  • Wrenshall News: Find the light in life in the dead of winter

    Anne Dugan|Feb 7, 2020

Minnesota climatology records show that January was the cloudiest on record since recorded observations started in 1963. With the gloomy weather it can be hard to stay motivated. Luckily, our community has some options for you. The city of Wrenshall created and maintains a free outdoor ice rink located just behind the post office and bus garage. It is lit by lights hanging in the pine trees that stay on until around 9 p.m. There is a warming house and bench for folks to put on skates and rest....

  • Esko musher has trouble on the trail

    Jana Peterson|Jan 31, 2020

When Alex LaPlante's third leg of the John Beargrease 120 sled dog race started, things went suddenly and dramatically wrong: Her sled tipped over right as the dogs were taking off after the countdown for the final leg of the race Monday from Finland to the Trestle Inn. "I got dragged out of view of the checkpoint, hanging on to my snow hook," LaPlante said. "At first I thought I lost the team ... I lost my grip on the handlebars, but suddenly my left arm went taut and I realized I still had the...

  • Wrenshall, Carlton home in on state aid

    Mike Creger|Jan 31, 2020

Wrenshall and Carlton school district officials continue to prepare for a possible consolidation vote this year. Last Friday, the two superintendents and board members met with local legislators to kick off what is hoped to be a successful lobbying effort when the Minnesota Legislature opens Feb. 11. That’s the same day the districts will release the results of a survey put out last month to ask residents and parents of students about their support for a consolidated district and the costs associated with it to shore up district campuses. R...

She says students ask about the next month's offering as each monthly meeting ends. "They are so engaged during art club, it's really fun to see," Kidd said. • Wrenshall news

    Anne Dugan|Jan 17, 2020

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and one of the ways I try and honor his legacy is to try something new and push myself to leave my comfort zone. Given the divisive nature of our national politics I am hoping to use the holiday to have a conversation with someone that I might not normally engage with. The national organization Story Corps has started a similar initiative that they are calling “One Small Step.” Story Corps has spent the last 15 years preserving and sharing humanity’s stori...
