The price tag is in on upgraded facilities for a consolidated Carlton and Wrenshall school district: $47.3 million. That was the estimate presented to district superintendent and school board members during a meeting Monday in Wrenshall. The firm ARI is working with the districts on the idea of a two-site option for consolidation - an elementary at Carlton's South Terrace school and a high school in Wrenshall. Both current campuses would need significant upgrades under the two-site plan. But...
Two buses filled with state legislators wound their way through the Northland earlier this month. Members of the House Capital Investment Committee visited Carlton first on Sept. 17, then continued to the Northeast Regional Corrections Center and Duluth, where they spent the night before heading up to Two Harbors, Silver Bay and beyond the next day. In Carlton, the legislative visitors were gifted with their own bottle of less-than-perfect water. "Derek Wolf [city of Carlton public works...

Football Cloquet-50 Hibbing-14 At halftime the Cloquet Lumberjacks led Hibbing by a 20-14 score but seemed to be struggling against the over-matched Bluejackets. Enter Marshall Hayes, a sophomore running back, who seemed to spark the ’Jacks offense in the second half. While star running back Cole Ketola handled most of the first-half running chores and churned up big yardage, it was Hayes who handled the bulk of the carries on the first drive of the second half that started a scoring o...
After losing two sets earlier this year to Esko, Cloquet was hoping to rebound Tuesday night as the Eskomos and the Lumberjacks met in a cross- town rivalry match at the Cloquet Middle School. Esko defeated Cloquet 2-0 in the North Branch Tournament less than two weeks ago and continued with their impressive season as they defeated Cloquet 25-17, 25-21, and 25-16 to improve to 13-4 overall on the season. The host Lumberjacks saw their season record drop to 6-10. The Eskomos' losses have all come...

Brian DePew said "seeing contemporary art in a barn next to an organic farm in northern Minnesota is not the way I thought I would be ending my evening," DePew, the executive director of the Center for Rural Affairs located in Lyons, Neb., went on: "But I couldn't have imagined a more wonderful end to the day". DePew was in Wrenshall Tuesday night along with 20 other fellows from BALLE, which stands for Business Alliance for Local Living Economies. The best description of what they are about cam...
Continued decreasing enrollment is driving decisions in the Carlton school district this month. Outside of the continuing discussions about consolidation with Wrenshall, the school board set its preliminary levy for next year at the maximum. By law, districts need to set levy parameters by Sept. 30 each year. While the levy could go down before December, it can’t be increased. The exact numbers, and impact on taxpayers, has yet to be determined as the state dictates the maximum levy for every school district. The district has seven fewer s...
"People are always happy when they come here, and if they aren't, they are always happy when they leave". That was Angela Rubish's response when I asked her about her business, the Ru-Ridge corn maze, located just north of Wrenshall on County Road 1. I tested Rubish's claim this past weekend when I took my 2- and 4-year-old children for an afternoon visit. We came happy, we left happy, and we had some good times in between - all without even making it 10 feet into the maze itself. "I'm always...
The 2019 combination of the Carlton Bulldogs and Wrenshall Wrens football teams continued its early season success Friday night as the Raptors picked up their third win of the season. Using stellar defense in the first half against Cromwell-Wright at Jim Erickson Field in Carlton, the Raptors rolled out to an early lead and never looked back. The final score was 48-6. "Our offense is finally starting to click," said Jeremy Zywicki, co-head coach for the Raptors. "We knew it would take a while...

The meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Carlton County Transportation Building and all residents are encouraged to attend. Carlton County road work is funded in five ways, with most income coming from state and federal...
The Wrenshall Wrens notched a road volleyball win on Tuesday night by beating the Fond du Lac Ogichidaa 25-15, 25-20 and 25-13, as two of the areas smallest schools did battle at FDL. "Offensively we served aggressively from start to finish," said Wrens coach John Peterson. "Brooke Kent served particularly well with nine aces. Then when we got the ball in transition we found our hitters early and established leads." Playing with an already young line up, the news prior to the game was not good...
The sky threatened the Cloquet girls cross country team and drenched the boys, but both teams raced to firsts in the Class AA boys and girls divisions at the Eveleth Lions Invitational Sept. 12. While Cloquet senior Jordan Allen won the boys race, the rest of the story was the depth of the Cloquet team. The Lumberjacks had all seven of their runners finish in the top 11. "I don't think the course conditions bothered our runners because we have practiced in conditions similar to those we...

There will be a flurry of meetings in the next two months as school boards in Wrenshall and Carlton continue to explore a consolidation of the districts. After joint meetings this summer with the full boards, members are moving in the direction of a single district with buildings in Carlton and Wrenshall, known as the two-site option. This week, committees from both boards met to discuss needs at the current schools should the school populations be merged. There are several state mandates that are pushing the boards along in the complicated...
For the first time in school history, South Ridge defeated Cromwell-Wright in high school football action, as the Panthers shut out the Cardinals 36-0 in Culver Friday, Sept. 6. "We saw some things we thought we could do both offensively and defensively in the first game against Floodwood that we could have some success with," head coach Brent Johnson said. "We also saw the things they did well and we knew if we played our game we could win." The Panthers would strike first Friday when Conner Bu...

Both artists work in partnership with the natural landscape and reflect on our comprehension of time and space. Catherine Meier explores the meaning of "open space" through animation, site-specific installations, and...
Did you hear that crowd roar in Carlton last Friday night? Funny how things work out when you just put heads together and do the logical thing. That’s what began to happen last fall when Carlton and Wrenshall football coaches saw they had a problem with fielding teams. Some years, the districts had to scrap seasons because they couldn’t fill out rosters. So began the idea of the two long-time rivals sharing a football program. It was working with cross-country, so why not football? It seems from the start that students were never the pro...
On a cool Friday night at Carlton's Jim Erickson Field, two longtime rivals came onto the field as one team for the first game of the season as the Carlton-Wrenshall Raptors edged the South Ridge Panthers 7-6. "These two schools have competed against one another for decades and tonight - to see these two schools and two groups of kids come together for one reason - it's truly amazing," co-head coach Jason Crane said. Two communities also came together to support the new program. "No longer is...
A field of sunflowers turns the world bright yellow as the flowers follow the sun across the sky. Mickayla Talberg said she drives by the field of flowers near Wrenshall every day on her mail route, and decided to bring a chair and her five children for a photo shoot on Aug. 23. Above, Mackenzie Kosloski, 7, and Kylie Kosloski, 9, pose in the midst of the flowers somewhat uncomfortably, as the bees and an enthusiastic reporter watch them. The boys were going to take their turn posing next,...
Carlton school board members took another step toward consolidating with Wrenshall last week by forming a committee to work on a two-site solution, but the district is also working to come up with costs for other possible future configurations that don’t include consolidation with Wrenshall. On Wednesday, Carlton superintendent Gwen Carman confirmed that three representatives each from the Carlton and Wrenshall school boards will meet Sept. 9 for a working session, to explore exactly what a t...
If there were a picture in the dictionary next to the word "scrappy," it probably would be a photo of the Carlton girls volleyball team. Last year the Bulldogs finished with a record of 29-4 and a sixth-place finish in the Class A Minnesota State volleyball tournament. The Bulldogs return the entire team from a year ago and would like to improve on that impressive season. Carlton features one of the best setters in the area, as well as one of the best defensive teams in the region. Add in some...
