The Carlton school district postponed a planned meeting Wednesday of the Carlton/Wrenshall consolidation committee. Carlton schools announced the decision Tuesday on social media, citing a letter from the Wrenshall school board resetting consolidation to July 1, 2026 — one year later than originally planned. “Our school board will discuss this new possible date at its next work session,” said the Carlton postponement notice. The next work session for the Carlton board is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 13, with its next regular board meeting 7 p.m....

For seven innings the Carlton/Wrenshall and Barnum boys baseball teams battled nose to nose. Then, in the top of the eighth inning, all that changed when the Raptors erupted for eight runs and came away with an explosive 15-8 early season win on the road April 18. "We got down early in the game and then showed a lot of resiliency to come back and win," said Carlton/Wrenshall coach Aaron Lattu. Both teams had offensive success in the first seven innings with each team putting up seven runs...

It would be easy to cast a wary eye at the actions of the Carlton school district, which over the course of roughly 10 days this month adopted a four-day school week beginning next year. The notion came as a surprise. The move to adopt it was hasty and could be construed as panic. The outcomes of a four-day week are worthy of a much longer discussion than the one held by the board and administration. The board’s action ignored Wrenshall altogether, even though the districts are in the process of negotiating consolidation. The superintendent p...

It would be an understatement to say Carlton/Wrenshall pitcher Abby Mitchell had a strong start to her season last week against Hinckley-Finlayson. Just how strong has yet to be determined. "We are currently trying to solidify the number of strikeouts she had, but we believe it was 24 in that game," said Raptors head coach Anna George. "If that is true, it would be a national record. In that game we were missing four of our starters. We had three dropped third strikes in which the batter got to...
Carlton superintendent Donita Stepan created a stir last week, when she announced April 3 to school district staff that a plan was being drafted that would move Carlton schools to a four-day school week as soon as next year. On Monday, during the first of three hastily scheduled public hearings announced Thursday, Stepan reflected for the school board on what she told teachers and staff. "I understand this is quick and I understand this isn't normally how we would do business, to move this...
Gordon Rolland “Gordy” Davis was born on July 24, 1928, to Rolland and Fern (Crowell) Davis in Duluth. He passed away on April 2, 2024, at his home in Carlton. Gordy attended Crosby Ironton High School in Crosby. After high school, Gordy moved to Cloquet to work at Wood Conversion. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 25, 1951 and served his country during the Korean War in Germany with the Army Corp of Engineers. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 24, 1953. He was united in marriage to Lillian...

As a 1966 graduate of Morgan Park High School, I befriended many Wrenshall graduates in that era. Morgan Park was a K-12 school, then a middle and high school, then just a middle school and now it’s gone forever. It was replaced by apartments as a result of Duluth’s consolidation known as the Red Plan, which cost taxpayers upwards of $300 million dollars. There are only a handful of K-12 school buildings left in the state. It is my belief these are diamonds in the rough. Wrenshall has always been K-12 and now has a trades facility to boot. Whe...
A photo featuring the 1931 Cromwell girls basketball team in the March 8 issue brought accolades on Facebook, a visit from Clarence Badger with an old Cromwellian magazine, and a phone call from June (Kingsley) Collman, whose mother, Blanche Line, was the top scorer in 1931. Collman said her mom had been playing defense until someone got sick and she was moved to center. That meant she could finally shoot and was a lucky change for Cromwell. According to the March 1931 Cromwellian, Line played...
With a snowstorm looming, the Polar League high school track season kicked off indoors Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Although no team scores were kept, local track and field athletes impressed in both the boys and girls divisions. The boys 60-meter dash featured some of the top local talent in the area. Esko's Koi Perich just nosed out Kaden Robbins of Moose Lake/Willow River to grab the win. Both Perich and Robbins were timed at 7.25 seconds with Jaxsyn Schmidt of ML/WR...

Carlton school board members got some healthy news this week: enrollment numbers in the district are on the rise, and the American Indian Parent Advisor Committee gave the school district a passing grade, both things that haven’t happened in recent years. Superintendent Donita Stepan reported enrollment numbers had shot up to 315 students as of the beginning of this month. Carlton had begun the school year expecting 295 students. If sustained, the new numbers are a reversal of a years-long trend. Last year, the district lost more than 50 s...
It’s no secret rural ambulance services are struggling. Called a “quiet crisis” by the state health department as far back as 2002, rural ambulance services across the state are being confronted with their own mortality: Continue forward in the face of endless budget deficits, or fold, and let neighboring or private ambulance services take over, sometimes coming from much farther away. It all makes what the city of Carlton has accomplished so impressive. Instead of waiting for legislative solutions, city officials and leaders in Carlton spent t...
The jug game is back. After basketball teams from Carlton and Wrenshall merged as the Raptors this season, it signaled the end to the boys and girls annual jug game rivalry. "I thought, why not, as a fundraiser, continue playing jug games but as alumni," said Emma Grover, Raptors girls basketball coach and Wrenshall alum. She talked with other coaches about the idea and "everyone was on board," she said. Last Saturday, 45 alumni took part in the men's and women's games. The Wrenshall grads won...
The Section 7A boys basketball season came to an end for local teams March 13 in Hibbing, where both Carlton/Wrenshall and Fond du Lac bowed out of the playoffs after semifinal games. In the first semifinal game, Carlton/Wrenshall dropped a tough 79-70 decision to Mountain Iron-Buhl. Playing in their first season as a basketball cooperative, the Raptors ended with an impressive 21-8 record. Carlton/Wrenshall trailed 35-32 at halftime and were still very much in the game. But the Rangers rode a...
Call them hiccups or hurdles, the consolidation efforts between the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts were bound to encounter them. But so soon in the process? A third meeting of the shared consolidation committee yielded an impasse on Tuesday, when the Wrenshall contingent pressed contract issues, while the Carlton contingent balked. "If that is where the line is drawn," Carlton board chair Julianne Emerson said, alluding to potential for a deal-breaker, "we can all have a really free...
The Carlton school board met Monday in a working session devoted mostly toward preparing for the next night’s consolidation committee meeting with Wrenshall. Carlton was still smarting from a set of emails exchanged primarily between the board chairs regarding information and agendas. The messages are terse, and like all emails had the potential to stir up raw emotions if written or received in a tone not intended. A March 4 meeting between the consolidation teams was intended to smooth over the disagreements and was partially successful, b...
After flirting for weeks with a resolution that calls for wolf management in the state, the Carlton County board voted unanimously Tuesday to appeal to federal and state legislators to delist gray wolves from endangered species protection. The board agreed to send letters to Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, as well as Rep. Pete Stauber, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and local state legislators, Sen. Jason Rarick and Rep. Jeff Dotseth. "We are hopeful that you will support this effort to delist...

The large Section 7A boys basketball tournament reached a fever pitch Wednesday, with two of the remaining four teams hailing from Carlton County. One of those local teams was expected to be in the mix, while the other has shocked everyone but themselves. On March 7, the No. 1 seed out of the south, Carlton/Wrenshall, easily handled No. 8 south seed South Ridge to the tune of 85-55. "Overall, it was a good team win," said Raptors coach Shawn Filipiak. "We came out a little slow, but we started...
A fire destroyed an unattached garage in Atkinson Township north of Mahtowa Friday, March 1. Fire crews and emergency responders were called to the 3100 block of Carlton County Road 144 at about 4:30 p.m. There was no one home, and the fire had taken over a garage and was threatening a nearby pole barn. The fire was contained and the barn had only minor damage. The garage and its contents were a total loss. Responders included those from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota Power, and the fire departments of Barnum, Mahtowa, W...
