The gym was rocking and the fans were in a frenzy last Friday when the Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors hosted Barnum in Wrenshall. The game was part of the Wrenshall homecoming festivities, and the Raptors didn't disappoint as they cruised to an impressive 71-58 win over a good Barnum team. "It was a great atmosphere with a student section that was really into it, and Barnum always has a lot of fans," said Raptors coach Shawn Filipiak. "It was just a fun, good, high school basketball game." The...

Aiming at consolidation as soon as the 2025-26 school year, the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts have formed a joint committee to lead the process. The consolidation committee will meet regularly along with additional monthly joint sessions of the full boards. Wrenshall board chair Mary Carlson shared details Wednesday of an informal meeting between the districts held this week. “I had the opportunity to sit down with their chairperson and the superintendent of Carlton and we had a fantastic first meeting,” Carlson said during a Wre...
The “Go big, or get out” mantra has dominated U.S. agriculture for decades. It is getting push-back from small and medium-sized farmers in the Lake Superior regions of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the public response is remarkable. At the Lake Superior Sustainable Farming Association annual meeting last weekend, executive director Julie Allen reported that its major annual activity, the September Harvest Festival in Duluth’s Bayfront Festival Park, was another huge success, attracting over...

The Wrenshall school board approved a search firm to hire its next superintendent during a special meeting on Monday, landing on a familiar name, one run by current superintendent Jeff Pesta. Pesta’s Rising Tide School Board Services, based in his hometown of Deer River, will conduct the search, one targeting a full-time intern. “This is Jeff’s really innovative idea,” board chair Mary Carlson said during an interview Wednesday. “I’m ready for Wrenshall to be pioneering things, and this seems like a great solution when there is a shortage of...

The soonest consolidation between Carlton and Wrenshall schools would become official is the 2025-26 school year. That was the timeline shared during a Jan. 18 meeting of the Wrenshall school board. Specifically, consolidation could take place July 1, 2025 — the start of the calendar year for schools across Minnesota. “Barring any emergency circumstances, that’s the earliest you could legally consolidate,” said Wrenshall superintendent Jeff Pesta. “You’re at the point now where … the next step is a commitment from the boards, which would b...
More than 50 people turned out for the Barnum school board meeting Tuesday, the majority in a show of support for school bus drivers. The crowd came as the board considered contracting with a private company for transportation services. It's something the district began exploring last summer, when it was down to three bus drivers. It takes eight to drive all the Barnum routes. By the start of the school year, there were four. Now, the district is up to six with the potential return of a...
Although Donald Trump won the Republican caucus in Iowa, it was the lowest voter turnout in years with only 14 percent of registered voters, according to David Muir of ABC News. Weather may have contributed. However, this means 86 percent failed to participate in the caucus, leaving one to believe there are many undecided voters who will wait until November to cast their votes, depending on one of the many lawsuits yet to be decided against Trump. As a voter who has lived through 14 presidents, I believe there has been too much drama during...
Things could not have gone any better for the Moose Lake/Willow River boys basketball team in their matchup against Carlton/Wrenshall Friday night. The Rebels shooting was beyond hot as they opened up a massive halftime lead on their way to an 84-40 win in Willow River. "We had a big start to the game and shot the lights out," said Rebels coach Paul Dewey. "I was a little surprised, because we hadn't been shooting that well and then we came out in that first half and lit it up." The Rebels...

My office is in the old Cloquet Co-op building in Esko, and it carries a lot of history. The thing is built solid. Those Finlanders obviously expected the building to be around for a hundred years or more. It’s tight, too, not drafty at all. So many people have stopped in over the years to reminisce about the old co-op. I feel like I’ve been here since the 1950s, when it was built. It carried groceries, of course, but also hardware, sewing stuff, farm supplies, and some clothing. And yes, to...

What do Minnesota farmers do in the wintertime? Aside from livestock chores, machinery repair, record analysis, next-season planning, and a little more family time, they can improve their knowledge and networks by attending conferences. When meat and poultry farmer Mark Thell, chair of the Carlton County Chapter of the Minnesota Farmers Union, fell ill last week, I was asked to attend the 21st annual Minnesota Organic Conference Jan. 11-12 in St. Cloud. The event drew over 300 hundred...
Carlton school board filled its leadership positions at its organizational meeting Monday. Julianne Emerson was re-elected to her position as chair. This will be her fourth consecutive year in the role. To date, she has served on the board 11 years total, leaving in 2018 and returning in 2020 as a write-in candidate. Over her previous terms starting in 2010, she served as chair for six years. Salaries for board members were renewed without change. Board members receive $1,000 a year plus $40 a meeting. Based on the tentative schedule, a member...
