An amicable gathering last week brought together most of the Wrenshall school board candidates in a public forum for the first time. As it concluded, the six candidates in attendance expressed pride in the school, and appreciation for one another. It stood in contrast to the tumult which has mired the board throughout the past year. But in subtler ways it also further illuminated the chasm between four relative newcomers and incumbents Deb Washenesky and Jack Eudy, along with board appointee...
First & Second Amendments, police, veterans, secure borders, every unborn, freedom, American dream, good to defeat evil, future of the USA and, most important, to serve my God. Bill Dian, Wrenshall...
Area students descend upon Cloquet Forestry Center Some of the first morning frosts of the season didn't put a chill on the enthusiasm of local fifth-graders participating in the Conservation Education Days at the University of Minnesota's Cloquet Forestry Center last week. More than 500 students from eight Carlton County school districts spent a full day learning outside their usual classrooms at the educational event focused on natural science topics Sept. 28-29. The annual event for...

Earlier this week, Carlton County election officials mailed 600 absentee ballots to people who’d requested to vote in advance of the Nov. 8 midterm election. It was a far cry from the 2020 general election, in which roughly half of the county’s voters (10,900) used early voting and mail-in options during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. “I feel like the 600 we just mailed out will be the bulk of them,” said Kevin DeVriendt, Carlton County auditor/treasurer. Early voting began last week, 46 days prior to election day, and voters can vote at...
Last week saw two different partial Wrenshall school board candidate forums, but residents may yet be able to attend a meeting with all seven candidates. After rejecting a Sept. 20 forum organized by the teachers union, three of the current board members - Jack Eudy, Deb Washenesky and Cindy Bourn - held their own candidate event Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Silver Brook town hall. Residents had plenty to say at the meeting, which started with a short introduction from each of the sponsoring...
JoAnn Lillian Johnson, 80, of Carlton, formerly of Vilonia, Arkansas, died Sept. 20, 2022. She was born Oct. 13, 1941, to Edgar and Bonnie (Annis) Stavang in Carlton. A proud Wrenshall Wren, she was a cheerleader, majorette, and the 1959 homecoming queen. During her career she worked as a legal secretary at Indian Legal Assistance and night-shift waitress at the Country Kitchen. She was united in marriage to Henry "Hank" Johnson in Wrenshall. JoAnn and Hank frequently traveled to Arkansas, and...
The meeting last Thursday at Silver Brook Town Hall [with Wrenshall candidates Jack Eudy, Cindy Bourn and Deb Washenesky] was a little confrontational at times but it was good that the public was allowed to speak. The teachers’ meeting earlier in the week was tightly controlled by teachers and the public was gagged. During what I’d call “the real public meeting” some facts came out. No. 1 was the “investigation” that all of the board members voted for is the elephant in the room and they are not allowed to comment on it. I feel the investigatio...
A teachers union-led candidate forum for Wrenshall school board had a kumbaya vibe Tuesday. But conflict currently affecting the board wasn't far behind, as three current board members declined to attend. Instead, they authored a mailer telling residents that teachers were behaving "improperly" by being involved in the election process. It didn't stop candidates Eric Ankrum, Mary Carlson, Kristin Reinsch and Ben Johnson from greeting roughly 70 teachers and members of the public. The hour-long...
Superintendent John Engstrom confirmed Monday that the Carlton school district will proceed with further talks with Wrenshall on sharing sports and other after-school activities. Engstrom noted that both district boards have passed an agreement to split costs evenly. After Carlton approved the agreement earlier this summer, the Wrenshall board unanimously approved an agreement this month. “My recommendation is that the subcommittee gets back together and talks about when the agreement should officially take effect, and if there are some c...
As a mid-70s-year-old male I’ve never witnessed a more divided America than today. While the insurrection was caused by a conspiracy crowd off misguided instructions by the former, twice-impeached president, Fox News anchors are claiming the IRS is coming with loaded AR-15s to take down small businesses. There is a cancer eating up our democracy and I believe Fox News, as well as most religious leaders, have steered their flocks to vote for the party for life no matter if the leader told 30-plus thousand lies, had three wives, tried to o...
AT&T customers and FirstNet subscribers in Wrenshall got a boost in wireless connectivity recently, with the addition of a new cell tower near the intersection of Military Road and Veterans Evergreen Memorial Drive. The update is expected to help customers get the most out of their mobile devices, AT&T said in a news release this month. “From connecting family and loved ones to helping first responders during a crisis, AT&T is committed to our Minnesota communities,” said Paul Weirtz, president of AT&T Minnesota. “We consistently work to provi...

Surrounded by 8 lush acres of corn at the Ru-Ridge Corn Maze in rural Carlton, Angela Line noted there were 21 leaves on a mature corn stalk. "We know when the end of summer is coming," Line said. "We count the leaves." The corn maze opened last weekend and is taking visitors through Oct. 30, generally on Thursdays and Fridays after 4 p.m. and weekends beginning at 10 a.m. Admission is $8 (cash or check only). It's wheelchair-accessible. Now in its sixth year, the corn maze takes more than an...
The Wrenshall school board’s stamina for conflict proved unyielding Monday, when its regular monthly meeting devolved into bickering and generated new insights into ongoing turmoil. Board member Nicole Krisak revealed that board members looked into superintendent Kim Belcastro’s work emails, fishing for information without informing the superintendent or having a specific reason to do so. “We looked into her emails,” Krisak said. “She didn’t know that. We had no right to do it. We still did it.” It was a surprising revelation from a meetin...
Local cross country teams got a firsthand look at almost all the other teams in the area last Thursday at the Dan Conway Classic in Superior. Held at Pattison Park Golf Course, the Conway Classic was an important race on this year's running circuit because the Swain and the Milaca races have both been canceled. There is speculation that those races may not be brought back, so having the Classic was a vital event for local runners. Duluth East captured top honors in both the boys and girls races...
There were more smiles than tears Wednesday morning at Cloquet's Washington Elementary School, as students arrived for the first day of school. The atmosphere was almost celebratory among some families. Moms Carina McKenna and Kelly Bischoff staged a photo shoot for their boys, heading into grades 1, 3 and 4 in the new school year. "They're super excited," said Bischoff. Washington principal Robbi Mondati said the feeling was mutual. "The day has been going great," she said around lunchtime...
The superintendent's introduction of a formal complaint form for use going forward opened the floodgates at Wrenshall Schools on Wednesday. Meeting during the committee of the whole, board members praised a new complaint form, designed to go to the superintendent, or board chair should the complaint address the superintendent. Complaints can come from students, parents, employees or community members. "We need to be transparent about where to go," board member Nicole Krisak said. Superintendent...

Following a closed meeting Wednesday that lasted three hours, the Wrenshall school board fired the school’s information technology director, Jaime Hopp, the Pine Knot News learned Thursday. Hopp had been the subject of a personnel investigation which began earlier this summer. The tech director was alleged to have profanely alluded to “killing” the district superintendent while in the staff lounge in June. Another district employee overheard the comment, which superintendent Kim Belcastro later reported to Carlton County authorities. Following...
For more years than anyone can remember, the local high school cross country teams have opened the season at Carlton's Chub Lake Park. The race, hosted by Esko, is more of a scrimmage than an actual meet, but it is a great way for runners to get their feet wet and see what the competition is like. "I have no idea how long this meet has been held," said Esko coach Jerimy Hallsten. "It is a really good opportunity for the kids who have never been to a cross country meet before and it gives them a...
