Molly Kidd can't remember the last time her art students at Wrenshall School were able to show off their work to family and friends, but colleague and school music teacher Tim Rahkola knows exactly when it was. "We were planning for a spring Grandparents Day in 2020," Rahkola told me, "when everything got shut down." The two arts specialists have been planning a return to the spring tradition this Friday, May 6, as a way for students to celebrate creative pursuits and show off the newly...
Mother Nature has not been kind to local high school baseball teams this spring. Cold, snowy and rainy weather has caused more than normal cancellations and postponements in the northern half of the state. The Pine Knot News this week caught up with coaches for a preview of local teams this season. Cloquet Cloquet head coach Tyler Olin is looking for improvement on a team that struggled to a below .500 record last season. "We were 7-15 last year," Olin said. "We had six seniors who graduated...

Joyce Delaine (Gault) Anderson, 91, went to be with the Lord on April 14, 2022, at Diamond Willow. She spent her final days surrounded by her loved ones. She was raised in Wrenshall, where she attended school and was a cheerleader and homecoming queen, graduating as a Wren. She married the love of her life, Donald A. Anderson, on March 28, 1953. Arnelda M. Southworth, 89, passed away April 13, 2022, surrounded by family. She was born May 14, 1932, in Fosston to Christian and Nora (Ness) Krohg. After losing her father at age 2, she was raised by her mother, the youngest in a blended family of 13 brothers and sisters, whom she adored. Arnelda graduated from high school in 1950 and attended Bemidji State Teachers college, earning a provisional two-year teaching certificate. She began teaching in Bagley, where she met her husband of 44...
The mood at the Carlton school board meeting was subdued, an obvious reaction to what was on the agenda: more cuts to education programs as the board seeks to find $250,000 in budget savings for the next school year. After Monday, it was $135,000 short of that goal as an estimated $115,000 in cuts have been made. There were mixed votes on all five reductions offered Monday, with just one failing on a tied vote. Moving arts classes to an online-only option failed, with those voting against saying the arts gets the ax too often when budget cuts...
The case of an injured Wrenshall man found trying to flag down cars April 10 on northbound Interstate 35 between Midway Road and the Proctor exit turns out to be related to a drug deal that never transpired, the criminal complaint states. The alleged shooter in the case is Esko resident Austin James Webster, 39, who appeared in St. Louis County Sixth District Court Friday, April 15, charged with second- degree assault and felon in possession of a firearm. Webster, who has several drug-related convictions in the past 12 years, including four as...
Contract negotiations between the Wrenshall school district and its teachers went to the rare step of mediation last month in order to resolve sticking points. The Wrenshall school board on Monday agreed to table approval of the eventual agreement until members can check the 36-page document that some received only just before the meeting. The contract, expected to be formally approved by the board at a special meeting next week, will date back to July 1, 2021. One board goal, to increase the starting wage for new teachers in the district,...
A man found Sunday afternoon walking along a highway with gunshot wounds to his legs near Midway Road and Interstate 35 led to a three-day investigation and an arrest on Tuesday. According to a St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office report, deputies were called to the area and discovered a 39-year-old Wrenshall man with injuries around 1:15 p.m. His injuries were not life threatening and he was treated and later released from a hospital. Deputies said he was reluctant to offer details about the shooting but they were eventually led to an area a f...
A man was arrested and at least three passengers injured Saturday after the driver rolled his SUV in a crash while likely under the influence of alcohol, according to the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the one-vehicle crash at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, April 2 on the 1400 block of County Road 4 in Twin Lakes Township. The SUV was traveling eastbound when it left the road and struck a driveway approach, causing it to roll over with five adult occupants inside. All were believed to be wearing seat belts at the time of the c...
The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office is notifying the public that a 24-year-old man who is classified as a risk Level 3 sex offender will be living in Wrenshall Township effective April 7. Darren Tyler Dunn was previously convicted of engaging in sexual conduct and contact against known teenaged females. In each incident Dunn used a relationship of trust he had created to attain and exploit unmonitored access. He used attention and affection in his effort to manage his victims. Dunn has served his sentence and is transitioning in to the c...
The warm weather of spring and the melting snow has local track teams getting ready for another exciting season. Take a look at some of these athletes in this preview of the 2022 track and field season. Cromwell-Wright Longtime Cromwell boys and girls track coach Dave Foster welcomed 35 athletes just a couple of weeks ago. Some of the very best runners in the area sport the Cardinals logo. "On the girls side we will be very young, with no senior or junior girls this year," said Foster. "The...
The Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District and the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program, in partnership with Northland Farm Supply, Widdes Feed & Farm Supply, and Federated Co-ops of Moose Lake, are all gearing up for the Cover Crop Field Days April 26-28. Field days highlight how farmers from across the county are incorporating cover crops into their farming practices. Cover crops have been used by farmers in Minnesota for decades and provide benefits to the farmer and the land they are planted on. The tour...
After 32 years, Byron and Caroline Johnson are ready to retire from the restaurant business. The Brickyard Restaurant in Wrenshall has been up for sale for about a month. “It’s been 32 years, I’m ready to retire,” Byron Johnson said. He said he hopes the business will go to another couple and the family-friendly, community meeting spot the couple maintained remains. The building and business, which is listed for $390,000, was built in 1990 by the community through fundraising and shared labor. Area residents wanted a place to get a cup of coffe...
I would like to respond to the article “One-man battle on petition continues” regarding the Wrenshall schools. First, Tony Sheda isn’t the only one who’s upset with how things were handled with the petition costs. The next statement that upsets me was the comment that when people went door-to-door, community members were upset about how the board appointment was handled. Not one person came to our door. I was also told (it was implied) that I had no business discussing the petition as I have no children in the school the day I stopped at Hugh L...
For Carley Lawry, one draw for the new pairing of Carlton and Wrenshall athletes in softball are the Raptors uniforms. "The jersey colors are snazzy," the eighth-grader said Tuesday at practice in a chilly Four Seasons arena in Carlton. But forgive the teams if they aren't exactly decked out in cool new uniforms to start a season that was expected to kick off today with games at Mountain Iron-Buhl. The school districts applied for the cooperative program at the 11th hour last month when...

It included the following students from the area: Ezekiel Palmer and Ben Talarico of Carlton, Hannah Green of Cloquet, and Alina Lekander of Mahtowa. • Winona State University recently announced its dean’s for last fall. It included the following students from the area: Amber Collman of Cromwell, Trayton Houck and Rosalie Richardson of Mahtowa, and Katelyn Kelley of Cloquet. • Paul Smith’s College in New York announced that Aidan Ripp of Cloquet was named t...
A storm sewer freeze-up caused some minor flooding at the school in Wrenshall Thursday, March 17, forcing the district to send students home at midday because water had collected in the cafeteria. The school was open again on Friday. The Wrenshall school board met Wednesday to discuss the issue, since it coincided with the continuing construction improvements being made at the school. Superintendent Kim Belcastro said the district is trying to figure out where the problem stemmed from and how to make an insurance claim. If any work needs to be...
The Carlton school board continued to explore its budget options Monday at its monthly regular meeting. It heard details from the online resource it currently uses to offer students a wider range of electives options. One of the goals of the board, in order to shave from its expected half-million-dollar deficit next year, is to increase online electives and eliminate teachers. The board formally approved allowing district office staff to seek cuts and offer recommendations to the board for consi...
If you use the Cloquet clock, it was supposed to be spring this week. Gordy’s is open. Alas, that rite of spring and harbinger of summer rarely means we get matching weather, even as the conventional calendar says we’ve reached “meteorological” spring. But here we are, in that waiting room between real warm and lingering winter. It has been an especially difficult end of winter here at the Pine Knot. Jana has been stuck at home with a bum leg for two months, meaning we can’t count on her ramblings about the community for pictures and all the t...
The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council announced that Anne Dugan of Wrenshall is one of three winners of the annual Arrowhead Arts Award. Recipients are nominated for their remarkable contributions to the arts in the region. Dugan won the Maddie Simons Arts Advocate Award, which recognizes an arts administrator, arts educator, volunteer for a nonprofit arts organization, or artist whose involvement in a project or program has substantially contributed to the arts in the region. The award comes...
It’s the petition that wouldn’t go away, or perhaps it’s just the angry district resident who won’t go away. An obviously distraught Tony Sheda repeated his demands to the Wrenshall school board Monday night that the creators of the petition that denied an appointment to the school board last August be responsible for the costs incurred by the school district to verify the petition. Despite repeated explanations and investigation of the issue that reached state offices in St. Paul, Sheda is yet to be satisfied, and apparently a majorit...
The South Ridge boys basketball season came to an end Saturday at UMD in a hard-fought game against the No. 1 seeded Cherry Tigers. After falling to Cherry by 43 points in December, the Panthers battled the Tigers until the very end of the Section 7A quarterfinal game, eventually falling by 6 points with the final score at 67-61. South Ridge was the last local school left in the boys 7A sectional tournament. Austin Josephson led the Panthers with 26 points in the loss, including hitting 9 of 10...
As the snow gets a bit soggy around the edges, thoughts of spring aren't far from the minds of Wrenshall area farmers, and many have been planning for the coming season by attending conferences and symposiums. My husband, Janaki Fisher-Merritt of the Food Farm, signed up for the virtual option of last month's organic vegetable production conference run by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and presented remotely to the Quebec ministry of agriculture. We had a few representatives from...
