Last year’s predictions were so eerily accurate that some people thought I had cheated, like maybe I had looked up the answers before making my predictions, which is, of course, impossible. My 12-year-old son, Patrick, suggested that maybe I had invented a time machine, as he thinks I am both brilliant and handy. But, alas, there is no time machine; I am just that good at predicting the future. So, I again share my talents with you and make my remarkably accurate predictions for 2022: • Tar...

After seeing Covid-19 cases climb precipitously this month, Wrenshall school district officials sent students an early Christmas present — letting kids out of school five days early — in hopes of getting people well. Superintendent Kim Belcastro said the early vacation was in response to rising Covid numbers, but even more about difficulties finding substitute teachers for sick teachers, including several who were fully vaccinated. Finding a balance between keeping students safe and giving the...
It was difficult to hear the pleas from students, parents and other district residents begging the school board to keep Carlton High School open. They were talking through masks and the speakers hanging from the ancient walls weren't optimal in the dimly lit and cavernous "small gym" that also serves as a cafeteria. Custodial machines could be heard in adjacent hallways. There was a varsity boys basketball game going on in the nearby main gym and buzzers and fans could be heard intermittently. A...
Regarding the Dec. 10 Harry’s Gang column by Pete Radosevich about U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber and his vote against the infrastructure bill last month: Maybe, just maybe, Pete Stauber wanted a vote of true infrastructure (roads, bridges). What percentage of all these Build Back Better measures go to honest, hard infrastructure. I challenge Pete (as part-owner of the paper and publisher) to publish what is in the bill or at least the top 20 or 25 items. Fix our roads and bridges but leave all the junk out. Tony Sheda, Wrenshall...

More than 30 people spoke Monday in a last ditch effort to convince Carlton School Board members to keep the high school open and the district a preK-12. Ostensibly, the public hearing at Carlton High School was about a proposed tuition agreement with Cloquet High School that both boards appear to favor. Under the terms of that agreement, Cloquet would guarantee acceptance of any Carlton student in grades 9-12 when the high school is closed there, possibly next year. But the meeting was really...
The number is big, but not a real surprise for residents of the Wrenshall school district. Taxes for residents and business owners will go up 26 percent next year. The school board approved the increase Monday at its regular meeting after a truth in taxation meeting and audit report Dec. 8. There was no public comment about the increase at either meeting. It is fueled by the continuing building improvement projects in the district the past year. The levy is increasing by $311,202, at $1.5 million for payable taxes in 2022 after $1.2 million...

By the time the English poet John Milton had completed his epic poem “Paradise Lost” in 1664, he was completely blind. He dictated most of the verse to his aides, which included his three daughters. That is partly why the theme of light plays so heavily in the text with many references to the light inside of us and comparisons between salvation and light: “Long is the way and hard, that out of Hell leads up to light.” Written at a time of political upheaval in Britain, Milton uses the poem to...
After two emotional meetings filled with public testimony in the past week, the Carlton school board failed to pass a resolution Monday night that would have led to an agreement with the Cloquet school district to take Carlton high schoolers. The tuition agreement, which would have eliminated the high school in Carlton, failed on a 3-3 vote. The board spent the past year going over its options after another consolidation effort with neighboring Wrenshall fizzled. The board now faces the...
Harold Ankrum is at it again, raising money for his favorite children’s hospital in novel ways. This time it’s Christmas trees. Cut your own tree or pick up a freshly cut tree, and donate what you can to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. To cut your own tree, visit Rod and Sue Holmes’ tree farm south of Wrenshall (3.3 miles south of County Road 4 (Military Road) on the west side of Minnesota State Highway 23 across from Fire #3030. Or pick up a freshly cut tree at Harold’s Service in Carlton....

We've heard much about supply chain issues over the past year or two as the world reckons with the Covid-19 pandemic. Rather than stress about whether that mass-produced item you panic- ordered on Amazon will make it here on time, we here at the Pine Knot News suggest you take a look (in person or online) at your own backyard. Buying locally is, after all, a win in so many ways. Gifts are often made (or grown) right here in Carlton County. Gifts or gift certificates from local businesses and ser...

While it may not have been the highest-scoring game, last week's Wrenshall vs. Carlton girls basketball game turned into an old-fashioned barn burner with the Bulldogs eventually coming out on top 37-35. It was an intense game. "For us, it was the first game of our season and the girls worked really hard," said first-year Wrenshall coach Emma Grover. "I don't think there was any moment that emotions weren't running high or the intensity wasn't up." Carlton started quickly in the first half and...
