  • Wren's Nest: Tree culling advice leads to a cozy cabin

    Anne Dugan|Dec 3, 2021

Over the last two years, my rural Wrenshall neighbor Burnell Peterson has built a cabin entirely of wood from trees he planted on his property 40 years ago. Peterson is quick to give Kelly Smith credit for the genesis of the project. “If it hadn’t been for Kelly, those red pine would still be standing,” he said. Two years ago, he reached out to Smith, who serves as a forestry technician at the Carlton County Soil and Water Conservation District, for assistance with planting a native pollinator h...

  • Letter: Jail defies push for forced vaccinations

    Nov 26, 2021

The Nov. 5 Pine Knot article on the small number of cases in the Carlton County jail, from Minnesota Public Radio, was fantastic, considering all the people in and out of the building. Why does the article then have to go on to say that the people there should get vaccinated? They are doing very well with safety. Not everyone wants the shot and shouldn't be forced, pressured or bribed to get it. Stop pressuring people and let them choose for themselves. Ronald Eng Wrenshall...

  • Covid comes knocking

    Mike Creger|Nov 19, 2021

Monday’s Wrenshall school board meeting began with a palpable moment of silence. Superintendent Kim Belcastro said the family of board member Alice Kloepke reported she had taken a turn for the worse in a battle with Covid-19 and was in an intensive care unit in the Twin Cities area. Hours earlier, Wrenshall resident Shelly Kilby posted a dire report on her husband Steve. “They needed to intubate Steve. It was a tough decision for him. They have called the six surrounding states to try and find a critical care unit for him. He received a tra...

  • Cross country: A final, mighty run

    Jana Peterson|Nov 12, 2021

Carlton County sent more than 35 runners to the cross country state championships Saturday, and they came back with some impressive results. Most impressive of all was Cromwell-Wright junior Noah Foster, who placed fourth in the boys Class A meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Foster ran the 5,000-meter race in 16:26.03. It was a big jump from his finish in 117th place as a freshman, although not quite the first-place spot he was gunning for. Less than a second separated Foster and the...

  • Bevy of 7A county runners make the State meet cut

    Jana Peterson|Nov 5, 2021

The ending of the Section 7A races Thursday were markedly different: Cromwell junior Noah Foster finished alone and unruffled - more than 23 seconds ahead of the second-place runner - while Panthers freshman Addison Burckhardt sprinted to beat her nearest competitor to the finish line. "I got like 20 seconds faster in this race," said Burckhardt, who finished in 19:54.80. "At the end, that girl (Ely seventh-grader Molly Brophy) was about to pass me and I just thought, I really want to win."...

  • Letter to the editor: Chicken release was a case of abuse

    Pine Knot News|Nov 5, 2021

In the Oct. 15 Pine Knot there was an article about the criminal abuse of animals. Turning loose hundreds of chickens after they outlived their usefulness. They were starving, thirsty, eating each other. Why wouldn’t they? They don’t know how to fend for themselves. What was done in the past with their chickens? Law enforcement should take a good look at this animal abuse. Tony Sheda, Wrenshall Editor’s note: The Pine Knot News was able to talk to Carlton County Sheriff Kelly Lake about the incident we reported on in the Oct. 15 issue. She s...

  • 30 years ago, a blizzard to remember

    Mike Creger|Oct 29, 2021

There are storms and then there are storms. The ones we remember are often tied to other significant events. Think of the Super Bowl blizzards in the 1970s, or the Armistice Day blizzard in 1940. The Halloween blizzard in Minnesota has properly taken its place in Minnesota weather lore. It's hard to forget trick-or-treating through heavy snow and even by snowmobile. It's hard to forget that in Carlton County we got a break of about just 20 inches of snow, really, compared to more than 3 feet in...

  • It's a super playoff Saturday slate

    Pine Knot News|Oct 29, 2021

As Minnesota rushes into postseason football, two Carlton County teams look like contenders to make a state run. Esko in Class AAA and Moose Lake/Willow River in Class AA both have gone undefeated this season and are favorites in sectional play. In Section 7AAA, the Eskomos finished the season 8-0 and allowed a total of only 34 points in those eight wins. In fact, the Eskomos shut out five of their eight opponents, including a Class AAAAA Duluth East team in the final game of the regular...
