In the Section 7AA girls basketball playoffs the No. 1 seeded Eskomos, not surprisingly, are still standing and were set to play No. 4 seed Crosby-Ironton Wednesday as this issue of the Pine Knot News went to press. Esko beat Eveleth-Gilbert 61-31 in the quarterfinals on Saturday after getting a bye in the first round. Jayden Karppinen had a huge night for the Eskomos by scoring 30 points and nearly outscoring the Golden Bears herself. If the Eskomos won Wednesday, they were set to advance to th...

  • Bombers are marching through Section 5A

    Kerry Rodd|Mar 26, 2021

Barnum is the only local team in the Section 5A boys basketball playoffs still standing, after defeating McGregor and St. John’s Prep to get to the semifinal game against Upsala set for Wednesday night after this issue of the Pine Knot News went to press. In the second round, Barnum defeated McGregor 50-41. After upsetting the No. 5 seeded Cromwell-Wright Cards last week, the McGregor Mercuries tried to do the same against No. 4 seeded Barnum. However, the Bombers had just enough offensive f...

  • Wrenshall news: Spring hits its marks

    Anne Dugan|Mar 26, 2021

At 4:37 a.m. on March 20, we officially passed into spring with the vernal equinox. We’ve tipped the scales and there is a little more light every day. Our family joined plenty of other folks around the area with a big fire in the backyard to boil down sap. I saw two trumpeter swans fly across the fields just as I was putting the maple syrup into jars. In the greenhouse, our onion seeds are up about an inch in their flats. After checking on the starts, I grabbed an onion from the root cellar o...

  • Guest View: Newspapers allow public info to shine

    Pine Knot News|Mar 19, 2021

From Jim Pumarlo Reminding citizens and public officials about the public’s right of access to government information is the focus of “Sunshine Week: It’s Your Right to Know,” March 14-20. At its foundation, Sunshine Week underscores preserving the free flow of information for an open, effective and accountable government. Newspapers, at their best, are stewards of their communities. The news columns are a blend of stories that people like to read and stories they should read. The advertising columns promote and grow local commerce. And the...

  • Guest Commentary: Another meeting? Noooooo

    Pine Knot News|Mar 19, 2021

As someone who is going on his 13th month of working from home, I've attended so many Zoom meetings, Webex sessions and Google Meets that I've lost count. One thing that I have noticed is a whole new world of excuses. It's like the "dog ate my paper" crowd has grown up and become adults. Here is a list of some of the most common, along with the actual definitions. • • She said: "I'm so sorry, I'm having issues with our band width." She meant: "I've got three kids and a spouse using every possibl...

  • It's a dog's life for Carlton County mushers

    Timothy Soden-Groves|Mar 12, 2021

Carlton County sled dog racers Will Bomier and Ted Wallace have spent countless hours over the past several decades tending to, training and racing their dogs. For them, time spent with their dogs is what they love to do. It turns out that is quite a lot of time, as Bomier and Wallace have over 80 years of mushing experience between them. Bomier lives near Mahtowa. He’s 38 years old but can already count 35 seasons on the dog sled trail. “My dad used to take me out, wrap me up and put me in the...

  • Cloquet will bring high school back full-time

    Jana Peterson|Mar 12, 2021

Cloquet High School students will return to full in-person learning effective Tuesday, March 16. That is happening despite the objections of the teachers union, which requested the district delay the return until April 6, the start of the fourth quarter, to more safely address the risks of Covid-19. Superintendent Michael Cary said he brought it to the Cloquet school board for a vote Monday rather than just an FYI because of the letter from the Education Minnesota Cloquet executive board, which noted it was representing roughly 50 percent of...

  • Brown Jug Joy

    Kerry Rodd|Mar 12, 2021

As local rivalries go perhaps none is bigger than the Carlton vs. Wrenshall boys basketball game featuring the traveling trophy known as the Brown Jug. This year's version of the game was held Friday, March 5, in Carlton with the host Bulldogs claiming bragging rights this season by taking a 63-45 win over the Wrens. Entering the game on Friday the two teams were both looking to get their records pointed in a northerly direction. Carlton had lost two of their last three games after suffering...

  • Bombers fly past Wrens

    Kerry Rodd|Mar 12, 2021

The Bombers jumped on the back of Rayna Klejeski to an impressive 50-34 girls basketball win over the Wrens in Wrenshall on Friday night. Barnum sprinted out to a 33-13 halftime lead and continued to feed Klejeski in the second half where she scored 14 more points in leading her team to the win. "We just couldn't match up against Klejeski," said Wrens coach Daimen LaFave. "She was just too tough for us inside." Klejeski nearly outscored the entire Wrenshall squad herself by finishing with 33 of...

  • Spring in Wrenshall

    Anne Dugan|Mar 12, 2021

This month is feeling a lot more like a new year to me than January did. Social media is filled with posts from folks remembering their last public event before lockdown measures swept the country, and I can’t help but compare each day to where we were last March. There are hopeful signs on the horizon as case numbers fall and vaccinations continue to expand. Spring in Minnesota is an inherently unpredictable time and the precarious nature of our place in this pandemic seems matched by the s...

  • As vaccinations rise, some vacillation

    Rebekah King|Mar 5, 2021

Although first responders in Minnesota got to jump to the front of the line for the Covid-19 vaccine, some have said "no" to getting vaccinated despite their elevated risk of contracting and spreading the coronavirus. Like other states, Minnesota is giving high-risk groups priority access to the vaccine during the first phases of vaccination. That includes all health care workers - including doctors, nurses, firefighters, paramedics, and other public health officials and emergency personnel -...

  • Student Views: Find new uses for trash

    Pine Knot News|Mar 5, 2021

A verdant forest flooding with life. A sun-baked land contrasted by the cool, calm sea. A fluttering flame of oranges, yellows, and reds. And a glittering wonderland crafted from diamonds. This is the land we were given, an immense, majestic being, now choking and sputtering on our waste. Over half of all material that could be composted is going to landfills instead, where it sits until it finally rots away, releasing gasses which suffocate the earth, and us along with it. If this waste were composted, many of these gasses would not be...

  • Wrenshall News: Libraries are sacred space

    Elle Swanson|Mar 5, 2021

Annie Dugan's recent column about what people are reading in the Wrenshall community got me thinking about libraries in schools. It's been a while since I've student-taught, but I can clearly remember the day I asked to see the library and was told the K-8 school did not have one. I grew up going to the public library and spending time in both the Churchill and Wrenshall libraries as a student. I was introduced to some of my favorite authors and books in these libraries. The readers I know...

  • Guest view: Districts have a lot invested in schools

    Mar 5, 2021

The Pine Knot News asked the superintendents of the Wrenshall and Carlton school districts to update readers on the state of consolidation. Wrenshall superintendent Kim Belcastro weighs in here: Since being hired as superintendent of Wrenshall school in 2012, the Carlton and Wrenshall districts have been in and out of consolidation talks for at least eight of the nine years. Many community members from the two districts will state that these talks have been going on for decades. It has been my priority to work closely with the Wrenshall school...

  • Guest view: Exploring the options

    Pine Knot News|Mar 5, 2021

The Pine Knot News asked the superintendents of the Wrenshall and Carlton school districts to update readers on the state of consolidation. Carlton superintendent John Engstrom weighs in here: The Carlton school board is currently in the process of exploring various options. The primary options under consideration right now are a K-8 school with a high school tuition agreement, a new K-12 school, and reconstituting consolidation talks with Wrenshall along with gauging the interest of other area small districts in finding additional ways to...

  • South Ridge making run to postseason

    Kerry Rodd|Mar 5, 2021

Don't look now, but the South Ridge Panthers girls basketball team is serving notice that they are going to be a tough team to beat come playoff time. The Panthers notched their fifth win in a row and their 10th win over the last 11 games when they defeated the Carlton Bulldogs 54-31 Thursday night. "It was a hard-fought victory for us and Carlton made us work very hard," said South Ridge coach Brad Olesiak. The Bulldogs fought hard to stay with the Panthers in the first half and trailed just...

  • Cards pluck Wrens

    Kerry Rodd|Mar 5, 2021

Cromwell-Wright used the three-point shot Tuesday night to defeat Wrenshall 66-49 in a high school boys basketball game played in Cromwell. "We played pretty well tonight," said Cardinals coach Bill Pocernich after the game. "We had struggled with shooting beyond the arc for a few games, but last night and tonight we shot it well." The Cards hit 13 of the long-range bombs in the win over Wrenshall Tuesday. On Monday they hit 12 from beyond the arc in a 59-40 win over McGregor in another home...

  • Raven attraction creates a bone yard

    Pine Knot News|Mar 5, 2021

Editor's note: A couple weeks ago, Pine Knot News columnist Annie Dugan received a text from Wrenshall resident Dale Wolf about a flock of ravens in his backyard. He provided her with his growing birding story. Six winters ago I returned home to find a cottontail rabbit had been hit near my driveway. I put it out in my backyard, thinking a fox or coyote would retrieve it within a few nights. I came in and fixed myself some tea. I was amazed to see that in only 15 minutes there were two ravens...

  • It's back to school again in county

    Jana Peterson|Feb 26, 2021

It's beginning to look like this school year will be a turnaround from previous school year, at least in terms of the pandemic. Last year, students enjoyed school as usual until mid-March, when Gov. Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Health abruptly informed schools they would need to close March 18-27. But students never came back - the school year was finished via distance learning, with students, teachers, parents and other staff figuring things out on the fly. This time around it may...
